Acts 7
1 The high priest said, “Are these things so?”
Alors le souverain sacrificateur lui demanda: En est-il bien ainsi?
2 He said, “Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,
Etienne répondit: Mes frères et mes pères, écoutez-moi! Le Dieu de gloire apparut à notre père Abraham, lorsqu'il était en Mésopotamie, avant qu'il vînt demeurer à Carran, et il lui dit:
3 and said to him, ‘Get out of your land and away from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.’
«Quitte ton pays et ta famille, et va dans le pays que je te montrerai.»
4 Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land where you are now living.
Alors, étant sorti du pays des Caldéens, il vint demeurer à Carran. De là, après la mort de son père, Dieu le fit passer dans le pays que vous habitez maintenant;
5 He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his offspring after him, when he still had no child.
il ne lui donna aucune propriété dans ce pays, pas même un pouce de terre; mais il promit de lui en donner la possession, comme à sa postérité après lui, bien qu'Abraham n'eût point d'enfants.
6 God spoke in this way: that his offspring would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.
Dieu parla ainsi: «Ses descendants séjourneront dans une terre étrangère; on les réduira en servitude, et on les maltraitera pendant quatre cents ans.»
7 ‘I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,’ said God, ‘and after that they will come out and serve me in this place.’
Mais Dieu dit encore: «Je jugerai la nation qui les aura asservis, et après cela, ils partiront et me rendront leur culte dans ce pays-ci.»
8 He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.
Puis Dieu lui donna l'alliance de la circoncision. C'est ainsi qu'Abraham ayant eu un fils, Isaac, le circoncit le huitième jour; ensuite Isaac circoncit Jacob, et Jacob les douze patriarches.
9 “The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him
Les patriarches, jaloux de Joseph, le vendirent pour être mené en Egypte; mais Dieu fut avec lui.
10 and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.
Il le délivra de toutes ses afflictions, et le remplit de grâce et de sagesse devant Pharaon, roi d'Egypte, qui l'établit gouverneur de l'Egypte et de toute sa maison.
11 Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.
Cependant il survint une famine dans tout le pays d'Egypte et en Canaan; la détresse était grande et nos pères ne pouvaient trouver des vivres.
12 But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.
Jacob, ayant appris qu'il y avait du blé en Egypte, y envoya nos pères une première fois.
13 On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family was revealed to Pharaoh.
La seconde fois, Joseph fut reconnu par ses frères, et Pharaon apprit quelle était l'origine de Joseph.
14 Joseph sent and summoned Jacob his father and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.
Alors Joseph envoya chercher Jacob, son père, et toute sa famille, en tout soixante-quinze personnes.
15 Jacob went down into Egypt and he died, himself and our fathers;
Jacob descendit donc en Egypte et il y mourut, ainsi que nos pères.
16 and they were brought back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.
Ils furent transportés à Sichem, et ensevelis dans le tombeau qu'Abraham avait acheté, à prix d'argent, des fils d'Hémor, de Sichem.
17 “But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,
Mais, lorsque vint le temps où devait s'accomplir la promesse que Dieu avait faite avec serment à Abraham, le peuple s'accrut et se multiplia en Egypte,
18 until there arose a different king who did not know Joseph.
jusqu'au moment où s'éleva en Egypte un autre roi, qui n'avait point connu Joseph.
19 The same took advantage of our race and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to abandon their babies, so that they would not stay alive.
Ce roi, employant la ruse contre notre race, maltraita nos pères, et les contraignit à exposer leurs nouveau-nés, pour les empêcher de vivre.
20 At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome to God. He was nourished three months in his father’s house.
En ce temps-là naquit Moïse; il était beau aux yeux de Dieu, et il fut élevé pendant trois mois dans la maison de son père.
21 When he was abandoned, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up and reared him as her own son.
Quand il fut exposé, la fille de Pharaon le recueillit et le fit élever comme son fils.
22 Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.
Moïse fut instruit dans toute la sagesse des Égyptiens; il était puissant en paroles et en oeuvres.
23 But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.
Mais, quand il eut quarante ans accomplis, il lui vint au coeur la pensée de visiter ses frères, les enfants d'Israël.
24 Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.
Voyant qu'on maltraitait l'un d'eux, il prit la défense de l'opprimé et le vengea en frappant l'Égyptien.
25 He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they did not understand.
Il croyait que ses frères comprendraient que Dieu leur accordait par sa main la délivrance; mais ils ne le comprirent pas.
26 “The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, ‘Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?’
Le lendemain, il se présenta à eux pendant qu'ils se battaient, et il les exhorta à vivre en paix, en leur disant: Mes amis, vous êtes frères; pourquoi vous maltraitez-vous l'un l'autre?
27 But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?
Celui qui maltraitait son prochain, le repoussa, en disant: Qui t'a établi chef et juge sur nous?
28 Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’
Veux-tu me tuer, comme tu as tué hier l'Égyptien?
29 Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.
A cette parole, Moïse s'enfuit et alla vivre en étranger dans le pays de Madian, où il eut deux fils.
30 “When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.
Quarante ans après, un ange lui apparut dans le désert du mont Sinaï, dans la flamme d'un buisson en feu.
31 When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, the voice of the Lord came to him,
En le voyant, Moïse fut étonné de cette apparition; et comme il s'approchait pour la considérer de plus près, la voix du Seigneur se fit entendre:
32 ‘I am the God of your fathers: the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ Moses trembled and dared not look.
«Je suis le Dieu de tes pères, le Dieu d'Abraham, d'Isaac et de Jacob» Moïse, tout tremblant, n'osait pas regarder.
33 The Lord said to him, ‘Take off your sandals, for the place where you stand is holy ground.
Alors le Seigneur lui dit: Ote la chaussure de tes pieds; car le lieu où tu te trouves est une terre sainte.
34 I have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.’
J'ai regardé et j'ai vu l'affliction de mon peuple en Egypte; j'ai entendu ses gémissements, et je suis descendu pour le délivrer. Viens maintenant, afin que je t'envoie en Egypte.
35 “This Moses whom they refused, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’—God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.
Ce Moïse qu'ils avaient rejeté, en disant: Qui t'a établi notre chef et notre juge? — c'est lui que Dieu envoya comme chef et comme libérateur, avec l'aide de l'ange qui lui était apparu dans le buisson.
36 This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.
C'est lui qui les fit sortir en accomplissant des prodiges et des miracles dans le pays d'Egypte, sur la mer Rouge et dans le désert, pendant quarante ans.
37 This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.’
C'est ce Moïse qui a dit aux enfants d'Israël: «Dieu vous suscitera, parmi vos frères, un prophète comme moi.»
38 This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living revelations to give to us,
C'est lui qui, dans l'assemblée du désert, était avec l'ange qui lui parlait sur le mont Sinaï et avec nos pères, et qui reçut des paroles de vie pour nous les donner.
39 to whom our fathers would not be obedient, but rejected him and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,
C'est à lui que nos pères n'ont pas voulu obéir; c'est lui qu'ils repoussèrent pour tourner leur coeur vers l'Egypte,
40 saying to Aaron, ‘Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’
en disant à Aaron: «Fais-nous des dieux qui marchent devant nous; car ce Moïse, qui nous a conduits hors du pays d'Egypte, nous ne savons ce qui lui est arrivé»
41 They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.
En ces jours-là, ils se firent un veau, ils offrirent un sacrifice à l'idole et se réjouirent de l'ouvrage de leurs mains.
42 But God turned away and gave them up to serve the army of the sky, as it is written in the book of the prophets, ‘Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?
Alors Dieu se détourna d'eux et les livra au culte de l'armée du ciel, comme il est écrit dans le livre des prophètes: «M'avez-vous donc offert des victimes et des sacrifices durant quarante ans au désert, maison d'Israël,
43 You took up the tabernacle of Moloch, the star of your god Rephan, the figures which you made to worship, so I will carry you away beyond Babylon.’
quand vous transportiez le tabernacle de Moloch et l'étoile du dieu Romphan, ces idoles que vous avez faites pour les adorer? C'est pourquoi, je vous déporterai au delà de Babylone.»
44 “Our fathers had the tabernacle of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;
La Tente du témoignage était au milieu de nos pères dans le désert, comme l'avait ordonné Celui qui dit à Moïse de la faire sur le modèle qu'il avait vu.
45 which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations whom God drove out before the face of our fathers to the days of David,
Nos pères, l'ayant reçue, l'introduisirent avec Josué dans le pays conquis sur les nations que Dieu chassa devant eux; et elle y resta jusqu'aux jours de David,
46 who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.
qui trouva grâce devant Dieu et demanda la faveur de donner une demeure au Dieu de Jacob.
47 But Solomon built him a house.
Alors Salomon lui bâtit une maison.
48 However, the Most High does not dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,
Mais le Très-Haut n'habite pas des édifices faits de main d'homme, suivant ces paroles du prophète:
49 ‘heaven is my throne, and the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?’ says the Lord. ‘Or what is the place of my rest?
«Le ciel est mon trône, et la terre est mon marchepied. Quelle maison me bâtirez-vous, dit le Seigneur, ou quel sera le lieu où je reposerai?
50 Did not my hand make all these things?’
N'est-ce pas ma main qui a fait toutes ces choses?»
51 “You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.
Hommes au cou raide, incirconcis de coeur et d'oreilles, vous vous opposez toujours au Saint-Esprit; vous êtes tels que vos pères!
52 Which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.
Lequel des prophètes vos pères n'ont-ils pas persécuté? Ils ont même tué ceux qui ont prédit la venue du Juste; et vous, maintenant, c'est lui que vous avez trahi; vous avez été ses meurtriers,
53 You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and did not keep it!”
vous qui avez reçu la Loi par le ministère des anges et qui ne l'avez point gardée!
54 Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.
Comme ils entendaient ces paroles, ils frémissaient de rage dans leur coeur, et ils grinçaient des dents contre Etienne.
55 But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,
Mais lui, rempli du Saint-Esprit, les yeux attachés au ciel, vit la gloire de Dieu et Jésus debout à la droite de Dieu.
56 and said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”
Et il dit: Je vois les cieux ouverts, et le Fils de l'homme debout à la droite de Dieu.
57 But they cried out with a loud voice and stopped their ears, then rushed at him with one accord.
Alors ils poussèrent de grands cris, se bouchèrent les oreilles, et ils se jetèrent tous ensemble sur lui;
58 They threw him out of the city and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.
et, après l'avoir traîné hors de la ville, ils le lapidèrent. Les témoins mirent leurs vêtements aux pieds d'un jeune homme nommé Saul.
59 They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit!”
Pendant qu'ils le lapidaient, Etienne priait et disait: Seigneur Jésus, reçois mon Esprit!
60 He kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them!” When he had said this, he fell asleep.
Puis, s'étant mis à genoux, il s'écria d'une voix forte: Seigneur, ne leur impute point ce péché! Et quand il eut dit ces paroles, il s'endormit.
