1 aparañca kiṇvaśūnyapūpōtsavasya kāla upasthitē
Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, drew near.
2 pradhānayājakā adhyāyakāśca yathā taṁ hantuṁ śaknuvanti tathōpāyām acēṣṭanta kintu lōkēbhyō bibhyuḥ|
The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill him, for they feared the people.
3 ētastin samayē dvādaśaśiṣyēṣu gaṇita īṣkariyōtīyarūḍhimān yō yihūdāstasyāntaḥkaraṇaṁ śaitānāśritatvāt
Satan entered into Judas, who was called Iscariot, who was numbered with the twelve.
4 sa gatvā yathā yīśuṁ tēṣāṁ karēṣu samarpayituṁ śaknōti tathā mantraṇāṁ pradhānayājakaiḥ sēnāpatibhiśca saha cakāra|
He went away, and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them.
5 tēna tē tuṣṭāstasmai mudrāṁ dātuṁ paṇaṁ cakruḥ|
They were glad, and agreed to give him money.
6 tataḥ sōṅgīkr̥tya yathā lōkānāmagōcarē taṁ parakarēṣu samarpayituṁ śaknōti tathāvakāśaṁ cēṣṭitumārēbhē|
He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the crowd.
7 atha kiṇvaśūnyapūpōtmavadinē, arthāt yasmin dinē nistārōtsavasya mēṣō hantavyastasmin dinē
The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover lamb must be sacrificed.
8 yīśuḥ pitaraṁ yōhanañcāhūya jagāda, yuvāṁ gatvāsmākaṁ bhōjanārthaṁ nistārōtsavasya dravyāṇyāsādayataṁ|
He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat."
9 tadā tau papracchatuḥ kucāsādayāvō bhavataḥ kēcchā?
They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare?"
10 tadā sōvādīt, nagarē praviṣṭē kaścijjalakumbhamādāya yuvāṁ sākṣāt kariṣyati sa yannivēśanaṁ praviśati yuvāmapi tannivēśanaṁ tatpaścāditvā nivēśanapatim iti vākyaṁ vadataṁ,
He said to them, "Look, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.
11 yatrāhaṁ nistārōtsavasya bhōjyaṁ śiṣyaiḥ sārddhaṁ bhōktuṁ śaknōmi sātithiśālā kutra? kathāmimāṁ prabhustvāṁ pr̥cchati|
Tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'
12 tataḥ sa janō dvitīyaprakōṣṭhīyam ēkaṁ śastaṁ kōṣṭhaṁ darśayiṣyati tatra bhōjyamāsādayataṁ|
He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there."
13 tatastau gatvā tadvākyānusārēṇa sarvvaṁ dr̥ṣdvā tatra nistārōtsavīyaṁ bhōjyamāsādayāmāsatuḥ|
They went, found things as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14 atha kāla upasthitē yīśu rdvādaśabhiḥ prēritaiḥ saha bhōktumupaviśya kathitavān
When the hour had come, he reclined at the table, and the apostles joined him.
15 mama duḥkhabhōgāt pūrvvaṁ yubhābhiḥ saha nistārōtsavasyaitasya bhōjyaṁ bhōktuṁ mayātivāñchā kr̥tā|
He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,
16 yuṣmān vadāmi, yāvatkālam īśvararājyē bhōjanaṁ na kariṣyē tāvatkālam idaṁ na bhōkṣyē|
for I say to you, I will not eat of it again until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God."
17 tadā sa pānapātramādāya īśvarasya guṇān kīrttayitvā tēbhyō datvāvadat, idaṁ gr̥hlīta yūyaṁ vibhajya pivata|
He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, "Take this, and share it among yourselves,
18 yuṣmān vadāmi yāvatkālam īśvararājatvasya saṁsthāpanaṁ na bhavati tāvad drākṣāphalarasaṁ na pāsyāmi|
for I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the Kingdom of God comes."
19 tataḥ pūpaṁ gr̥hītvā īśvaraguṇān kīrttayitvā bhaṅktā tēbhyō datvāvadat, yuṣmadarthaṁ samarpitaṁ yanmama vapustadidaṁ, ētat karmma mama smaraṇārthaṁ kurudhvaṁ|
He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me."
20 atha bhōjanāntē tādr̥śaṁ pātraṁ gr̥hītvāvadat, yuṣmatkr̥tē pātitaṁ yanmama raktaṁ tēna nirṇītanavaniyamarūpaṁ pānapātramidaṁ|
Likewise, he took the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
21 paśyata yō māṁ parakarēṣu samarpayiṣyati sa mayā saha bhōjanāsana upaviśati|
But look, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.
22 yathā nirūpitamāstē tadanusārēṇā manuṣyaputrasya gati rbhaviṣyati kintu yastaṁ parakarēṣu samarpayiṣyati tasya santāpō bhaviṣyati|
The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed."
23 tadā tēṣāṁ kō jana ētat karmma kariṣyati tat tē parasparaṁ praṣṭumārēbhirē|
They began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.
24 aparaṁ tēṣāṁ kō janaḥ śrēṣṭhatvēna gaṇayiṣyatē, atrārthē tēṣāṁ vivādōbhavat|
There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest.
25 asmāt kāraṇāt sōvadat, anyadēśīyānāṁ rājānaḥ prajānāmupari prabhutvaṁ kurvvanti dāruṇaśāsanaṁ kr̥tvāpi tē bhūpatitvēna vikhyātā bhavanti ca|
He said to them, "The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called 'benefactors.'
But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.
27 bhōjanōpaviṣṭaparicārakayōḥ kaḥ śrēṣṭhaḥ? yō bhōjanāyōpaviśati sa kiṁ śrēṣṭhō na bhavati? kintu yuṣmākaṁ madhyē'haṁ paricāraka̮ivāsmi|
For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves.
28 aparañca yuyaṁ mama parīkṣākālē prathamamārabhya mayā saha sthitā
But you are those who have continued with me in my trials.
29 ētatkāraṇāt pitrā yathā madarthaṁ rājyamēkaṁ nirūpitaṁ tathāhamapi yuṣmadarthaṁ rājyaṁ nirūpayāmi|
I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me,
30 tasmān mama rājyē bhōjanāsanē ca bhōjanapānē kariṣyadhvē siṁhāsanēṣūpaviśya cēsrāyēlīyānāṁ dvādaśavaṁśānāṁ vicāraṁ kariṣyadhvē|
that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel."
31 aparaṁ prabhuruvāca, hē śimōn paśya tita̮unā dhānyānīva yuṣmān śaitān cālayitum aicchat,
And the Lord said, "Simon, Simon, look, Satan has demanded to have you all, to sift you like wheat,
32 kintu tava viśvāsasya lōpō yathā na bhavati ētat tvadarthaṁ prārthitaṁ mayā, tvanmanasi parivarttitē ca bhrātr̥ṇāṁ manāṁsi sthirīkuru|
but I prayed for you, that your faith would not fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers."
33 tadā sōvadat, hē prabhōhaṁ tvayā sārddhaṁ kārāṁ mr̥tiñca yātuṁ majjitōsmi|
He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death."
34 tataḥ sa uvāca, hē pitara tvāṁ vadāmi, adya kukkuṭaravāt pūrvvaṁ tvaṁ matparicayaṁ vāratrayam apahvōṣyasē|
He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times."
35 aparaṁ sa papraccha, yadā mudrāsampuṭaṁ khādyapātraṁ pādukāñca vinā yuṣmān prāhiṇavaṁ tadā yuṣmākaṁ kasyāpi nyūnatāsīt? tē prōcuḥ kasyāpi na|
He said to them, "When I sent you out without money bag, and pack, and shoes, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing."
36 tadā sōvadat kintvidānīṁ mudrāsampuṭaṁ khādyapātraṁ vā yasyāsti tēna tadgrahītavyaṁ, yasya ca kr̥pāṇō nāsti tēna svavastraṁ vikrīya sa krētavyaḥ|
Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a money bag must take it, and likewise a pack. Whoever has none, must sell his cloak, and buy a sword.
37 yatō yuṣmānahaṁ vadāmi, aparādhijanaiḥ sārddhaṁ gaṇitaḥ sa bhaviṣyati| idaṁ yacchāstrīyaṁ vacanaṁ likhitamasti tanmayi phaliṣyati yatō mama sambandhīyaṁ sarvvaṁ sētsyati|
For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'And he was numbered with transgressors.' For that which concerns me has an end."
38 tadā tē prōcuḥ prabhō paśya imau kr̥pāṇau| tataḥ sōvadad ētau yathēṣṭau|
They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough."
39 atha sa tasmādvahi rgatvā svācārānusārēṇa jaitunanāmādriṁ jagāma śiṣyāśca tatpaścād yayuḥ|
He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.
40 tatrōpasthāya sa tānuvāca, yathā parīkṣāyāṁ na patatha tadarthaṁ prārthayadhvaṁ|
When he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you do not enter into temptation."
41 paścāt sa tasmād ēkaśarakṣēpād bahi rgatvā jānunī pātayitvā ētat prārthayāñcakrē,
He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed,
42 hē pita ryadi bhavān sammanyatē tarhi kaṁsamēnaṁ mamāntikād dūraya kintu madicchānurūpaṁ na tvadicchānurūpaṁ bhavatu|
saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."
43 tadā tasmai śaktiṁ dātuṁ svargīyadūtō darśanaṁ dadau|
And an angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
44 paścāt sōtyantaṁ yātanayā vyākulō bhūtvā punardr̥ḍhaṁ prārthayāñcakrē, tasmād br̥hacchōṇitabindava iva tasya svēdabindavaḥ pr̥thivyāṁ patitumārēbhirē|
Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.
45 atha prārthanāta utthāya śiṣyāṇāṁ samīpamētya tān manōduḥkhinō nidritān dr̥ṣṭvāvadat
When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of grief,
46 kutō nidrātha? parīkṣāyām apatanārthaṁ prarthayadhvaṁ|
and said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."
47 ētatkathāyāḥ kathanakālē dvādaśaśiṣyāṇāṁ madhyē gaṇitō yihūdānāmā janatāsahitastēṣām agrē calitvā yīśōścumbanārthaṁ tadantikam āyayau|
While he was still speaking, look, a crowd came, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him.
48 tadā yīśuruvāca, hē yihūdā kiṁ cumbanēna manuṣyaputraṁ parakarēṣu samarpayasi?
But Jesus said to him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"
49 tadā yadyad ghaṭiṣyatē tadanumāya saṅgibhiruktaṁ, hē prabhō vayaṁ ki khaṅgēna ghātayiṣyāmaḥ?
When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, "Lord, should we strike with the sword?"
50 tata ēkaḥ karavālēnāhatya pradhānayājakasya dāsasya dakṣiṇaṁ karṇaṁ cicchēda|
A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 adhūnā nivarttasva ityuktvā yīśustasya śrutiṁ spr̥ṣṭvā svasyaṁ cakāra|
But Jesus answered and said, "No more of this." Then he touched his ear and healed him.
52 paścād yīśuḥ samīpasthān pradhānayājakān mandirasya sēnāpatīn prācīnāṁśca jagāda, yūyaṁ kr̥pāṇān yaṣṭīṁśca gr̥hītvā māṁ kiṁ cōraṁ dharttumāyātāḥ?
Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
53 yadāhaṁ yuṣmābhiḥ saha pratidinaṁ mandirē'tiṣṭhaṁ tadā māṁ dharttaṁ na pravr̥ttāḥ, kintvidānīṁ yuṣmākaṁ samayōndhakārasya cādhipatyamasti|
When I was with you in the temple daily, you did not stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."
54 atha tē taṁ dhr̥tvā mahāyājakasya nivēśanaṁ ninyuḥ| tataḥ pitarō dūrē dūrē paścāditvā
They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed from a distance.
55 br̥hatkōṣṭhasya madhyē yatrāgniṁ jvālayitvā lōkāḥ samētyōpaviṣṭāstatra taiḥ sārddham upavivēśa|
When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them.
56 atha vahnisannidhau samupavēśakālē kāciddāsī manō niviśya taṁ nirīkṣyāvadat pumānayaṁ tasya saṅgē'sthāt|
A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him."
57 kintu sa tad apahnutyāvādīt hē nāri tamahaṁ na paricinōmi|
But he denied it, saying, "Woman, I do not know him."
58 kṣaṇāntarē'nyajanastaṁ dr̥ṣṭvābravīt tvamapi tēṣāṁ nikarasyaikajanōsi| pitaraḥ pratyuvāca hē nara nāhamasmi|
After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them." But Peter answered, "Man, I am not."
59 tataḥ sārddhadaṇḍadvayāt paraṁ punaranyō janō niścitya babhāṣē, ēṣa tasya saṅgīti satyaṁ yatōyaṁ gālīlīyō lōkaḥ|
After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean."
60 tadā pitara uvāca hē nara tvaṁ yad vadami tadahaṁ bōddhuṁ na śaknōmi, iti vākyē kathitamātrē kukkuṭō rurāva|
But Peter said, "Man, I do not know what you are talking about." Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61 tadā prabhuṇā vyādhuṭya pitarē nirīkṣitē kr̥kavākuravāt pūrvvaṁ māṁ trirapahnōṣyasē iti pūrvvōktaṁ tasya vākyaṁ pitaraḥ smr̥tvā
The Lord turned, and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows today you will deny me three times."
62 bahirgatvā mahākhēdēna cakranda|
And he went out, and wept bitterly.
63 tadā yai ryīśurdhr̥tastē tamupahasya praharttumārēbhirē|
The men who held him began mocking and beating him.
64 vastrēṇa tasya dr̥śau baddhvā kapōlē capēṭāghātaṁ kr̥tvā papracchuḥ, kastē kapōlē capēṭāghātaṁ kr̥tavāna? gaṇayitvā tad vada|
And having blindfolded him, they were striking his face and kept asking him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one who struck you?"
65 tadanyat tadviruddhaṁ bahunindāvākyaṁ vaktumārēbhirē|
They spoke many other things against him, insulting him.
66 atha prabhātē sati lōkaprāñcaḥ pradhānayājakā adhyāpakāśca sabhāṁ kr̥tvā madhyēsabhaṁ yīśumānīya papracchuḥ, tvam abhiṣikatōsi na vāsmān vada|
As soon as it was day, the council of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying,
67 sa pratyuvāca, mayā tasminnuktē'pi yūyaṁ na viśvasiṣyatha|
"If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you won't believe,
68 kasmiṁścidvākyē yuṣmān pr̥ṣṭē'pi māṁ na taduttaraṁ vakṣyatha na māṁ tyakṣyatha ca|
and if I ask, you will not answer me, or let me go.
69 kintvitaḥ paraṁ manujasutaḥ sarvvaśaktimata īśvarasya dakṣiṇē pārśvē samupavēkṣyati|
From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."
70 tatastē papracchuḥ, rtiha tvamīśvarasya putraḥ? sa kathayāmāsa, yūyaṁ yathārthaṁ vadatha sa ēvāhaṁ|
They all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say that I am."
71 tadā tē sarvvē kathayāmāsuḥ, rtiha sākṣyē'nsasmin asmākaṁ kiṁ prayōjanaṁ? asya svamukhādēva sākṣyaṁ prāptam|
They said, "Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth."
