1 aparanjca tasmin kAlE rAjyasya sarvvESAM lOkAnAM nAmAni lEkhayitum agastakaisara AjnjApayAmAsa|
Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar [Ruler] Augustus [Revered, Esteemed, Venerable] that all the world should be enrolled.
2 tadanusArENa kurINiyanAmani suriyAdEzasya zAsakE sati nAmalEkhanaM prArEbhE|
This was the first enrollment made when Quirinius was governor of Syria [Elevated].
3 atO hEtO rnAma lEkhituM sarvvE janAH svIyaM svIyaM nagaraM jagmuH|
All went to enroll themselves, everyone to his own city.
4 tadAnIM yUSaph nAma lEkhituM vAgdattayA svabhAryyayA garbbhavatyA mariyamA saha svayaM dAyUdaH sajAtivaMza iti kAraNAd gAlIlpradEzasya nAsaratnagarAd
Joseph [May he add] also went up from Galilee [District, Circuit], out of the city of Nazareth [Branch, Separated one], into Judea [Praise], to David [Beloved]’s city, which is called Bethlehem [House of Bread], because he was of the house and family of David [Beloved];
5 yihUdApradEzasya baitlEhamAkhyaM dAyUdnagaraM jagAma|
to enroll himself with Mary [Rebellion], who was pledged to be married to him as wife, being pregnant.
6 anyacca tatra sthAnE tayOstiSThatOH satO rmariyamaH prasUtikAla upasthitE
While they were there, the day had come for her to give birth.
7 sA taM prathamasutaM prAsOSTa kintu tasmin vAsagRhE sthAnAbhAvAd bAlakaM vastrENa vESTayitvA gOzAlAyAM sthApayAmAsa|
She gave birth to her firstborn son. She wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in the inn.
8 anantaraM yE kiyantO mESapAlakAH svamESavrajarakSAyai tatpradEzE sthitvA rajanyAM prAntarE prahariNaH karmma kurvvanti,
There were shepherds in the same country staying in the field, and keeping watch by night over their flock.
9 tESAM samIpaM paramEzvarasya dUta AgatyOpatasthau; tadA catuSpArzvE paramEzvarasya tEjasaH prakAzitatvAt tE'tizazagkirE|
Behold, an angel of Adonai stood by them, and the shekhinah ·manifest weighty glory and presence of God· shone around them, and they were terrified.
10 tadA sa dUta uvAca mA bhaiSTa pazyatAdya dAyUdaH purE yuSmannimittaM trAtA prabhuH khrISTO'janiSTa,
The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy which will be to all the people.
11 sarvvESAM lOkAnAM mahAnandajanakam imaM maggalavRttAntaM yuSmAn jnjApayAmi|
For there is born to you today, in David [Beloved]’s city, a Savior, who is Messiah [Anointed one] the MarYah [Master Yahweh].
12 yUyaM (tatsthAnaM gatvA) vastravESTitaM taM bAlakaM gOzAlAyAM zayanaM drakSyatha yuSmAn pratIdaM cihnaM bhaviSyati|
This is the sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in strips of cloth, lying in a feeding trough.”
13 dUta imAM kathAM kathitavati tatrAkasmAt svargIyAH pRtanA Agatya kathAm imAM kathayitvEzvarasya guNAnanvavAdiSuH, yathA,
Suddenly, there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God, and saying,
14 sarvvOrdvvasthairIzvarasya mahimA samprakAzyatAM| zAntirbhUyAt pRthivyAstu santOSazca narAn prati||
“Glory to God in the highest, on earth peace, good will toward men.”
15 tataH paraM tESAM sannidhE rdUtagaNE svargaM gatE mESapAlakAH parasparam avEcan Agacchata prabhuH paramEzvarO yAM ghaTanAM jnjApitavAn tasyA yAtharyaM jnjAtuM vayamadhunA baitlEhampuraM yAmaH|
When the angels went away from them into the sky, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem [House of Bread], now, and see this thing that has happened, which MarYah [Master Yahweh] has made known to us.”
16 pazcAt tE tUrNaM vrajitvA mariyamaM yUSaphaM gOzAlAyAM zayanaM bAlakanjca dadRzuH|
They came with haste, and found both Mary [Rebellion] and Joseph [May he add], and the baby was lying in the feeding trough.
17 itthaM dRSTvA bAlakasyArthE prOktAM sarvvakathAM tE prAcArayAnjcakruH|
When they saw it, they publicized widely the saying which was spoken to them about this child.
18 tatO yE lOkA mESarakSakANAM vadanEbhyastAM vArttAM zuzruvustE mahAzcaryyaM mEnirE|
All who heard it wondered at the things which were spoken to them by the shepherds.
19 kintu mariyam EtatsarvvaghaTanAnAM tAtparyyaM vivicya manasi sthApayAmAsa|
But Mary [Rebellion] kept all these sayings, pondering them in her heart.
20 tatpazcAd dUtavijnjaptAnurUpaM zrutvA dRSTvA ca mESapAlakA Izvarasya guNAnuvAdaM dhanyavAdanjca kurvvANAH parAvRtya yayuH|
The shepherds teshuvah ·completely returned·, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told them.
21 atha bAlakasya tvakchEdanakAlE'STamadivasE samupasthitE tasya garbbhasthitEH purvvaM svargIyadUtO yathAjnjApayat tadanurUpaM tE tannAmadhEyaM yIzuriti cakrirE|
When eight days were fulfilled for the circumcision of the child, his name was called Yeshua [Salvation], which was given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
22 tataH paraM mUsAlikhitavyavasthAyA anusArENa mariyamaH zucitvakAla upasthitE,
When the time came for their purification according to the Torah ·Teaching· of Moses [Drawn out] were fulfilled, they brought him up to Jerusalem [City of peace], to present him to MarYah [Master Yahweh]
23 "prathamajaH sarvvaH puruSasantAnaH paramEzvarE samarpyatAM," iti paramEzvarasya vyavasthayA
(as it is written in the Torah ·Teaching· of MarYah [Master Yahweh], “Every firstborn male shall be consecrated holy to MarYah [Master Yahweh]”),
24 yIzuM paramEzvarE samarpayitum zAstrIyavidhyuktaM kapOtadvayaM pArAvatazAvakadvayaM vA baliM dAtuM tE taM gRhItvA yirUzAlamam AyayuH|
and to offer a sacrifice according to that which is said in the Torah ·Teaching· of MarYah [Master Yahweh], “A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.”
25 yirUzAlampuranivAsI zimiyOnnAmA dhArmmika Eka AsIt sa isrAyElaH sAntvanAmapEkSya tasthau kinjca pavitra AtmA tasminnAvirbhUtaH|
Behold, there was a man in Jerusalem [City of peace] whose name was Simeon [Hearing]. This man was upright and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel [God prevails], and Ruach haKodesh [Spirit of the Holiness] was on him.
26 aparaM prabhuNA paramEzvarENAbhiSiktE trAtari tvayA na dRSTE tvaM na mariSyasIti vAkyaM pavitrENa AtmanA tasma prAkathyata|
It had been revealed to him by Ruach haKodesh [Spirit of the Holiness] that he should not see death before he had seen Adonai’s Messiah [Anointed one].
27 aparanjca yadA yIzOH pitA mAtA ca tadarthaM vyavasthAnurUpaM karmma karttuM taM mandiram AninyatustadA
Prompted by haRuach [the Spirit], he went into the temple courts; and when the parents brought in the child Yeshua [Salvation] to do for him what the Torah ·Teaching· required,
28 zimiyOn Atmana AkarSaNEna mandiramAgatya taM krOPE nidhAya Izvarasya dhanyavAdaM kRtvA kathayAmAsa, yathA,
then he received him into his arms, and blessed God, and said,
29 hE prabhO tava dAsOyaM nijavAkyAnusArataH| idAnIntu sakalyANO bhavatA saMvisRjyatAm|
“Now you are releasing your servant, Master, according to your word, in peace;
30 yataH sakaladEzasya dIptayE dIptirUpakaM|
for my eyes have seen your method of salvation,
31 isrAyElIyalOkasya mahAgauravarUpakaM|
which you have prepared before the face of all peoples;
32 yaM trAyakaM janAnAntu sammukhE tvamajIjanaH| saEva vidyatE'smAkaM dhravaM nayananagOcarE||
a light for revelation to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel [God prevails].”
33 tadAnIM tEnOktA EtAH sakalAH kathAH zrutvA tasya mAtA yUSaph ca vismayaM mEnAtE|
Joseph [May he add] and his mother were marveling at the things which were spoken concerning him,
34 tataH paraM zimiyOn tEbhya AziSaM dattvA tanmAtaraM mariyamam uvAca, pazya isrAyElO vaMzamadhyE bahUnAM pAtanAyOtthApanAya ca tathA virOdhapAtraM bhavituM, bahUnAM guptamanOgatAnAM prakaTIkaraNAya bAlakOyaM niyuktOsti|
and Simeon [Hearing] blessed them, and said to Mary [Rebellion], his mother, “Behold, this child is set for the falling and the rising of many in Israel [God prevails], and for a sign which is spoken against.
35 tasmAt tavApi prANAH zUlEna vyatsyantE|
Yes, a sword will pierce through your own soul, that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”
36 aparanjca AzErasya vaMzIyaphinUyElO duhitA hannAkhyA atijaratI bhaviSyadvAdinyEkA yA vivAhAt paraM sapta vatsarAn patyA saha nyavasat tatO vidhavA bhUtvA caturazItivarSavayaHparyyanataM
There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher [Happy] (she was of a great age, having lived with a husband seven years from her virginity,
37 mandirE sthitvA prArthanOpavAsairdivAnizam Izvaram asEvata sApi strI tasmin samayE mandiramAgatya
and she had been a widow for about eighty-four years), who didn’t depart from the temple, worshiping with fastings and petitions night and day.
38 paramEzvarasya dhanyavAdaM cakAra, yirUzAlampuravAsinO yAvantO lOkA muktimapEkSya sthitAstAn yIzOrvRttAntaM jnjApayAmAsa|
Coming up at that very hour, she gave thanks to Yahweh, and spoke of him to all those who were looking for redemption in Jerusalem [City of peace].
39 itthaM paramEzvarasya vyavasthAnusArENa sarvvESu karmmasu kRtESu tau punazca gAlIlO nAsaratnAmakaM nijanagaraM pratasthAtE|
When they had accomplished everything required by the Torah ·Teaching· of MarYah [Master Yahweh], they returned into Galilee [District, Circuit], to their town of Nazareth [Branch, Separated one].
40 tatpazcAd bAlakaH zarIrENa vRddhimEtya jnjAnEna paripUrNa AtmanA zaktimAMzca bhavitumArEbhE tathA tasmin IzvarAnugrahO babhUva|
The child was growing, and was becoming strong in spirit, being filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon him.
41 tasya pitA mAtA ca prativarSaM nistArOtsavasamayE yirUzAlamam agacchatAm|
His parents went every year to Jerusalem [City of peace] at the festival of the Pesac ·Passover·.
42 aparanjca yIzau dvAdazavarSavayaskE sati tau parvvasamayasya rItyanusArENa yirUzAlamaM gatvA
When he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem [City of peace] according to the custom of the feast,
43 pArvvaNaM sampAdya punarapi vyAghuyya yAtaH kintu yIzurbAlakO yirUzAlami tiSThati| yUSaph tanmAtA ca tad aviditvA
and when they had fulfilled the days, as they were making teshuvah ·complete return·, the boy Yeshua [Salvation] stayed behind in Jerusalem [City of peace]. Joseph [May he add] and his mother didn’t know it,
44 sa saggibhiH saha vidyata Etacca budvvA dinaikagamyamArgaM jagmatuH| kintu zESE jnjAtibandhUnAM samIpE mRgayitvA taduddEzamaprApya
but supposing him to be in the company, they went a day’s journey, and they looked for him among their relatives and acquaintances.
45 tau punarapi yirUzAlamam parAvRtyAgatya taM mRgayAnjcakratuH|
When they didn’t find him, they make teshuvah ·complete return· to Jerusalem [City of peace], looking for him.
46 atha dinatrayAt paraM paNPitAnAM madhyE tESAM kathAH zRNvan tattvaM pRcchaMzca mandirE samupaviSTaH sa tAbhyAM dRSTaH|
After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the middle of the teachers, both listening to them, and asking them questions.
47 tadA tasya buddhyA pratyuttaraizca sarvvE zrOtArO vismayamApadyantE|
All who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
48 tAdRzaM dRSTvA tasya janakO jananI ca camaccakratuH kinjca tasya mAtA tamavadat, hE putra, kathamAvAM pratItthaM samAcarastvam? pazya tava pitAhanjca zOkAkulau santau tvAmanvicchAvaH sma|
When they saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us this way? Behold, your 'Avikah ·your Father· and I were anxiously looking for you.”
49 tataH sOvadat kutO mAm anvaicchataM? piturgRhE mayA sthAtavyam Etat kiM yuvAbhyAM na jnjAyatE?
He said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Didn’t you know that I must be in 'Avi ·my Father·’s house?”
50 kintu tau tasyaitadvAkyasya tAtparyyaM bOddhuM nAzaknutAM|
They didn’t understand the saying which he spoke to them.
51 tataH paraM sa tAbhyAM saha nAsarataM gatvA tayOrvazIbhUtastasthau kintu sarvvA EtAH kathAstasya mAtA manasi sthApayAmAsa|
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth [Branch, Separated one]. He was subject to them, and his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 atha yIzO rbuddhiH zarIranjca tathA tasmin Izvarasya mAnavAnAnjcAnugrahO varddhitum ArEbhE|
And Yeshua [Salvation] increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.
