Isaías 36

1 E aconteceu no ano décimo quarto do rei Ezequias que Senacherib, rei da Assyria subiu contra todas as cidades fortes de Judá, e as tomou.

Now it came to pass in the fourteenth year of king Hezekiah, that Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the defended cities of Judah, and took them.

2 Então o rei da Assyria enviou a Rabsaké, desde Lachis a Jerusalém, ao rei Ezequias com um grande exército, e parou junto ao cano de água do viveiro mais alto, junto ao caminho do campo do lavandeiro.

And the king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a great army. And he stood by the conduit of the upper pool in the highway of the fuller’s field.

3 Então saiu a ele Eliakim, filho de d'Hilkias, o mordomo, e Sebna, o escrivão, e Joah, filho d'Asaph, o chanceler.

Then came forth to him Eliakim, Hilkiah’s son, which was over the house, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, Asaph’s son, the recorder.

4 E Rabsaké lhes disse: Ora dizei a Ezequias: Assim diz o grande rei, o rei da Assyria: Que confiança é esta, em que confias?

And Rabshakeh said to them, Say you now to Hezekiah, Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, What confidence is this wherein you trust?

5 Bem podera eu dizer (porém palavra de lábios é): há conselho e poder para a guerra: em quem pois agora confias, que contra mim te rebelas?

I say, say you, (but they are but vain words) I have counsel and strength for war: now on whom do you trust, that you rebel against me?

6 Eis que confias naquele bordão de cana quebrada, a saber, no Egito, o qual, se alguém se encostar nele lhe entrará pela mão, e lha furará: assim é faraó, rei do Egito, para com todos os que nele confiam.

See, you trust in the staff of this broken reed, on Egypt; where on if a man lean, it will go into his hand, and pierce it: so is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all that trust in him.

7 Porém se me disseres: No Senhor, nosso Deus, confiamos; porventura não é este aquele cujos altos e cujos altares Ezequias tirou, e disse a Judá e a Jerusalém: Perante este altar vos inclinareis?

But if you say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, You shall worship before this altar?

8 Ora, pois, dá agora reféns ao meu senhor, o rei da Assyria, e dar-te-ei dois mil cavalos, se tu poderes dar cavaleiros para eles.

Now therefore give pledges, I pray you, to my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you be able on your part to set riders on them.

9 Como pois farias que se torne o rosto a um só príncipe dos mínimos servos do meu senhor? porém tu confias no Egito, por causa dos carros e cavaleiros.

How then will you turn away the face of one captain of the least of my master’s servants, and put your trust on Egypt for chariots and for horsemen?

10 Agora, pois, subi eu porventura sem o Senhor contra esta terra, para destrui-la? O Senhor mesmo me disse: Sobe contra esta terra, e destroi-a.

And am I now come up without the LORD against this land to destroy it? the LORD said to me, Go up against this land, and destroy it.

11 Então disse Eliakim, e Sebna, e Joah, a Rabsaké: Pedimos-te que fales aos teus servos em syriaco, porque bem o entendemos, e não nos fales em judaico, aos ouvidos do povo que está em cima do muro.

Then said Eliakim and Shebna and Joah to Rabshakeh, Speak, I pray you, to your servants in the Syrian language; for we understand it: and speak not to us in the Jews’ language, in the ears of the people that are on the wall.

12 Porém Rabsaké disse: Porventura mandou-me o meu senhor só ao teu senhor e a ti, para falar estas palavras? e não antes aos homens que estão assentados em cima do muro, para que comam convosco o seu esterco, e bebam a sua urina?

But Rabshakeh said, Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? has he not sent me to the men that sit on the wall, that they may eat their own dung, and drink their own urine with you?

13 Rabsaké pois se pôs em pé, e clamou em alta voz em judaico, e disse: Ouvi as palavras do grande rei, do rei da Assyria.

Then Rabshakeh stood, and cried with a loud voice in the Jews’ language, and said, Hear you the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

14 Assim diz o rei: Não vos engane Ezequias; porque não vos poderá livrar.

Thus says the king, Let not Hezekiah deceive you: for he shall not be able to deliver you.

15 Nem tão pouco Ezequias vos faça confiar no Senhor, dizendo: infalivelmente nos livrará o Senhor, e esta cidade não será entregue nas mãos do rei da Assyria.

Neither let Hezekiah make you trust in the LORD, saying, The LORD will surely deliver us: this city shall not be delivered into the hand of the king of Assyria.

16 Não deis ouvidos a Ezequias; porque assim diz o rei da Assyria: contratai comigo por presentes, e saí a mim, e comei vós cada um da sua vide, e da sua figueira, e bebei cada um da água da sua cisterna;

Listen not to Hezekiah: for thus says the king of Assyria, Make an agreement with me by a present, and come out to me: and eat you every one of his vine, and every one of his fig tree, and drink you every one the waters of his own cistern;

17 Até que eu venha, e vos leve para uma terra como a vossa: terra de trigo e de mosto, terra de pão e de vinhas.

Until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of corn and wine, a land of bread and vineyards.

18 Não vos engane Ezequias, dizendo: O Senhor nos livrará. Porventura os deuses das nações livraram cada um a sua terra das mãos do rei da Assyria?

Beware lest Hezekiah persuade you, saying, the LORD will deliver us. Has any of the gods of the nations delivered his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria?

19 Onde estão os deuses de Hamath e de Arpad? onde estão os deuses de Sepharvaim? porventura livraram a Samaria da minha mão?

Where are the gods of Hamath and Arphad? where are the gods of Sepharvaim? and have they delivered Samaria out of my hand?

20 Quais são eles, dentre todos os deuses destas terras, os que livraram a sua terra das minhas mãos, para que o Senhor livrasse a Jerusalém das minhas mãos?

Who are they among all the gods of these lands, that have delivered their land out of my hand, that the LORD should deliver Jerusalem out of my hand?

21 Porém eles se calaram, e palavra nenhuma lhe responderam; porque havia mandado do rei, dizendo: Não lhe respondereis.

But they held their peace, and answered him not a word: for the king’s commandment was, saying, Answer him not.

22 Então Eliakim, filho d'Hilkias, o mordomo, e Sebna, o escrivão, e Joah, filho d'Asaph, o chanceler, vieram a Ezequias, com os vestidos rasgados, e lhe fizeram saber as palavras de Rabsaké.

Then came Eliakim, the son of Hilkiah, that was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah, the son of Asaph, the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
