امثال 23

۱ 1 چون با حاکم به غذا خوردن نشینی، درآنچه پیش روی تو است تامل نما.

When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what [is] before thee:

۲ 2 و اگر مرد اکول هستی کارد بر گلوی خودبگذار.

And put a knife to thy throat, if thou [art] a man given to appetite.

۳ 3 به خوراکهای لطیف او حریص مباش، زیراکه غذای فریبنده است.

Be not desirous of his dainties: for they [are] deceitful food.

۴ 4 برای دولتمند شدن خود را زحمت مرسان واز عقل خود باز ایست.

Labor not to be rich: cease from thy own wisdom.

۵ 5 آیا چشمان خود را بر آن خواهی دوخت که نیست می‌باشد؟ زیرا که دولت البته برای خودبالها می‌سازد، و مثل عقاب در آسمان می‌پرد.

Wilt thou set thy eyes upon that which is not? for [riches] certainly make to themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle towards heaven.

۶ 6 نان مرد تنگ نظر را مخور، و به جهت خوراکهای لطیف او حریص مباش.

Eat thou not the bread of [him that hath] an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainties:

۷ 7 زیرا چنانکه در دل خود فکر می‌کند خود اوهمچنان است. تو را می‌گوید: بخور و بنوش، امادلش با تو نیست.

For as he thinketh in his heart, so [is] he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart [is] not with thee.

۸ 8 لقمه‌ای را که خورده‌ای قی خواهی کرد، وسخنان شیرین خود را بر باد خواهی داد.

The morsel [which] thou hast eaten shalt thou vomit up, and lose thy sweet words.

۹ 9 به گوش احمق سخن مگو، زیرا حکمت کلامت را خوار خواهد شمرد.

Speak not in the ears of a fool: for he will despise the wisdom of thy words.

۱۰ 10 حد قدیم را منتقل مساز، و به مزرعه یتیمان داخل مشو،

Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless:

۱۱ 11 زیرا که ولی ایشان زورآور است، و با تو دردعوی ایشان مقاومت خواهد کرد.

For their redeemer [is] mighty; he will plead their cause with thee.

۱۲ 12 دل خود را به ادب مایل گردان، و گوش خود را به کلام معرفت.

Apply thy heart to instruction, and thy ears to the words of knowledge.

۱۳ 13 از طفل خود تادیب را باز مدار که اگر او رابا چوب بزنی نخواهد مرد،

Withhold not correction from the child: for [if] thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.

۱۴ 14 پس او را با چوب بزن، و جان او را از هاویه نجات خواهی داد. (Sheol h7585)

Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell. (Sheol h7585)

۱۵ 15 ‌ای پسر من اگر دل تو حکیم باشد، دل من (بلی دل ) من شادمان خواهد شد.

My son, if thy heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

۱۶ 16 و گرده هایم وجد خواهد نمود، هنگامی که لبهای تو به راستی متکلم شود.

Yes, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.

۱۷ 17 دل تو به جهت گناهکاران غیور نباشد، امابه جهت ترس خداوند تمامی روز غیور باش،

Let not thy heart envy sinners: but [be thou] in the fear of the LORD all the day long.

۱۸ 18 زیرا که البته آخرت هست، و امید تومنقطع نخواهد شد.

For surely there is an end; and thy expectation shall not be cut off.

۱۹ 19 پس تو‌ای پسرم بشنو و حکیم باش، و دل خود را در طریق مستقیم گردان.

Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thy heart in the way.

۲۰ 20 از زمره میگساران مباش، و از آنانی که بدنهای خود را تلف می‌کنند.

Be not among wine-bibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

۲۱ 21 زیرا که میگسار و مسرف، فقیر می‌شود وصاحب خواب به خرقه‌ها ملبس خواهد شد.

For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe [a man] with rags.

۲۲ 22 پدر خویش را که تو را تولید نمود گوش گیر، و مادر خود را چون پیر شود خوار مشمار.

Hearken to thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

۲۳ 23 راستی را بخر و آن را مفروش، و حکمت وادب و فهم را.

Buy the truth, and sell [it] not; [also] wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.

۲۴ 24 پدر فرزند عادل به غایت شادمان می‌شود، و والد پسر حکیم از او مسرور خواهد گشت.

The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise [child] shall have joy of him.

۲۵ 25 پدرت و مادرت شادمان خواهند شد، ووالده تو مسرور خواهد گردید.

Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bore thee shall rejoice.

۲۶ 26 ‌ای پسرم دل خود را به من بده، و چشمان تو به راههای من شاد باشد،

My son, give me thy heart, and let thy eyes observe my ways.

۲۷ 27 چونکه زن زانیه حفره‌ای عمیق است، و زن بیگانه چاه تنگ.

For a lewd woman [is] a deep ditch; and a strange woman [is] a narrow pit.

۲۸ 28 او نیز مثل راهزن در کمین می‌باشد، وخیانتکاران را در میان مردم می‌افزاید.

She also lieth in wait as [for] a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.

۲۹ 29 وای از آن کیست و شقاوت از آن که ونزاعها از آن کدام و زاری از آن کیست وجراحت های بی‌سبب از آن که و سرخی چشمان از آن کدام؟

Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

۳۰ 30 آنانی را است که شرب مدام می‌نمایند، و برای چشیدن شراب ممزوج داخل می‌شوند.

They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.

۳۱ 31 به شراب نگاه مکن وقتی که سرخ‌فام است، حینی که حبابهای خود را در جام ظاهر می‌سازد، و به ملایمت فرو می‌رود.

Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth its color in the cup, [when] it moveth itself aright.

۳۲ 32 اما در آخر مثل مار خواهد گزید، و مانندافعی نیش خواهد زد.

At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.

۳۳ 33 چشمان تو چیزهای غریب را خواهد دید، و دل تو به چیزهای کج تنطق خواهد نمود،

Thy eyes shall behold strange women, and thy heart shall utter perverse things.

۳۴ 34 و مثل کسی‌که در میان دریا می‌خوابدخواهی شد، یا مانند کسی‌که بر سر دکل کشتی می‌خسبد،

And thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.

۳۵ 35 و خواهی گفت: مرا زدند لیکن درد رااحساس نکردم، مرا زجر نمودند لیکن نفهمیدم. پس کی بیدار خواهم شد؟ همچنین معاودت می‌کنم و بار دیگر آن را می‌طلبم.

They have stricken me, [wilt thou say], [and] I was not sick; they have beaten me, [and] I felt [it] not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
