Roemers 4
1 Wie steht es nun nach unserer Behauptung bei unserem Stammvater dem Leibe nach, bei Abraham?
What shall we say then that Abraham hath found, who is our father according to the flesh.
2 Ward Abraham aus Werken gerechtfertigt, so mag er sich rühmen; doch nicht vor Gott.
For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory, but not before God.
3 Was steht denn in der Schrift? "Abraham glaubte Gott, und es ward ihm angerechnet als Gerechtigkeit."
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.
4 Dem, der Werke tut, wird der Lohn nicht aus Gnade, vielmehr nach Verdienst berechnet.
Now to him that worketh, the reward is not reckoned according to grace, but according to debt.
5 Wer aber keine Werke tut und doch an den glaubt, der den Gottlosen zum Gerechten macht, dem wird sein Glaube zur Gerechtigkeit angerechnet nach dem Ratschluß der Gnade Gottes.
But to him that worketh not, yet believeth in him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is reputed to justice, according to the purpose of the grace of God.
6 So spricht David auch sein "Selig" über den Menschen, dem Gott Gerechtigkeit anrechnet ohne Werke:
As David also termeth the blessedness of a man, to whom God reputeth justice without works:
7 "Selig, deren Missetaten verziehen und deren Sünden bedeckt sind;
Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
8 selig der Mann, dem der Herr die Sünden nicht anrechnet."
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord hath not imputed sin.
9 Gilt nun dieses "Selig" nur von den Beschnittenen oder auch von der Vorhaut? Wir sagen: "Der Glaube ward dem Abraham als Gerechtigkeit angerechnet."
This blessedness then, doth it remain in the circumcision only, or in the uncircumcision also? For we say that unto Abraham faith was reputed to justice.
10 Wann wurde er ihm angerechnet? Nach der Beschneidung oder vor der Beschneidung? Nicht nach der Beschneidung, vielmehr in der Vorhaut.
How then was it reputed? When he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 Das Zeichen der Beschneidung erhielt er ja als Besiegelung der Gerechtigkeit, die er durch den Glauben in der Vorhaut hatte. Er sollte der Vater aller sein, die in der Vorhaut glauben, damit auch ihnen die Gerechtigkeit angerechnet würde.
And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the justice of the faith, which he had, being uncircumcised; that he might be the father of all them that believe, being uncircumcised, that unto them also it may be reputed to justice:
12 Er sollte aber auch der Vater der Beschnittenen sein, soweit sie nicht allein Beschnittene sind, vielmehr getreulich unserem Vater Abraham in seinem Glauben folgen, den er schon in der Vorhaut hatte.
And might be the father of circumcision; not to them only, that are of the circumcision, but to them also that follow the steps of the faithful, that is in the uncircumcision of our father Abraham.
13 Dem Abraham oder seinen Nachkommen ward die Verheißung, er würde einst die Welt zum Erbe erhalten, nicht durch das Gesetz, sondern durch die Gerechtigkeit des Glaubens.
For not through the law was the promise to Abraham, or to his seed, that he should be heir of the world; but through the justice of faith.
14 Denn wenn nur die, die das Gesetz besitzen, Erben wären, dann wäre der Glaube eitel und die Verheißung nichtig.
For if they who are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, the promise is made of no effect.
15 Denn das Gesetz bewirkt Zorn; wo es aber kein Gesetz gibt, da gibt es auch keine Übertretung.
For the law worketh wrath. For where there is no law, neither is there transgression.
16 Und deshalb geschieht es durch den Glauben, damit die Gerechtigkeit aus Gnade komme und die Verheißung allen Nachkommen gesichert sei; nicht nur denen, die aus dem Gesetze kommen, sondern auch denen, die dem Glauben Abrahams entstammen, der unser aller Vater ist
Therefore is it of faith, that according to grace the promise might be firm to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,
17 gemäß dem Schriftwort: "Zum Vater vieler Völker habe ich dich gemacht." Er ist dies vor Gott, an den er glaubte, der die Toten auferweckt und das, was nicht ist, ins Dasein ruft.
(As it is written: I have made thee a father of many nations, ) before God, whom he believed, who quickeneth the dead; and calleth those things that are not, as those that are.
18 Er hat gegen alle Hoffnung vertrauensvoll geglaubt, daß er Vater vieler Völker werde, wie zu ihm gesprochen ward: "So wird dein Stamm sein."
Who against hope believed in hope; that he might be made the father of many nations, according to that which was said to him: So shall thy seed be.
19 Auch ward er nicht im Glauben wankend, als er seinen schon erstorbenen Leib betrachtete - er war ja beinahe hundert Jahre alt - und den gleichfalls erstorbenen Schoß der Sara.
And he was not weak in faith; neither did he consider his own body now dead, whereas he was almost an hundred years old, nor the dead womb of Sara.
20 Er hegte keinen ungläubigen Zweifel an der Verheißung Gottes, sondern wurde stark im Glauben und gab Gott die Ehre,
In the promise also of God he staggered not by distrust; but was strengthened in faith, giving glory to God:
21 durchaus überzeugt, daß er, der die Verheißung gab, sie auch erfüllen könne.
Most fully knowing, that whatsoever he has promised, he is able also to perform.
22 Darum "ward es ihm zur Gerechtigkeit angerechnet."
And therefore it was reputed to him unto justice.
23 Es steht nun aber nicht nur seinetwegen da: "Es ward ihm angerechnet",
Now it is not written only for him, that it was reputed to him unto justice,
24 sondern auch unseretwegen, denen es erst angerechnet werden soll, uns, die wir an den glauben, der unseren Herrn Jesus von den Toten auferweckt hat,
But also for us, to whom it shall be reputed, if we believe in him, that raised up Jesus Christ, our Lord, from the dead,
25 der um unserer Sünden willen hingeopfert ward und auferweckt wurde zu unserer Rechtfertigung.
Who was delivered up for our sins, and rose again for our justification.
