Proverbs 23
1 When you sit to eat with a ruler, consider diligently what is before you;
Quando te sentares para comer com algum dominador, presta muita atenção para o que estiver diante de ti;
2 put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite.
E põe uma faca à tua garganta, se tiveres muito apetite.
3 Don’t be desirous of his dainties, since they are deceitful food.
Não desejes as comidas gostosas dele, porque são pão de mentiras.
4 Don’t weary yourself to be rich. In your wisdom, show restraint.
Não trabalhes exaustivamente para ser rico; modera-te por meio de tua prudência.
5 Why do you set your eyes on that which is not? For it certainly sprouts wings like an eagle and flies in the sky.
Porás teus olhos fixos sobre aquilo que é nada? Porque certamente se fará asas, e voará ao céu como uma águia.
6 Don’t eat the food of him who has a stingy eye, and don’t crave his delicacies,
Não comas o pão de quem tem olho maligno, nem cobices suas comidas gostosas.
7 for as he thinks about the cost, so he is. “Eat and drink!” he says to you, but his heart is not with you.
Porque ele calcula [seus gastos] consigo mesmo. Assim ele dirá: Come e bebe; Mas o coração dele não está contigo;
8 You will vomit up the morsel which you have eaten and waste your pleasant words.
Vomitarias o pedaço que comeste, e perderias tuas palavras agradáveis.
9 Don’t speak in the ears of a fool, for he will despise the wisdom of your words.
Não fales aos ouvidos do tolo, porque ele desprezará a prudência de tuas palavras.
10 Don’t move the ancient boundary stone. Don’t encroach on the fields of the fatherless,
Não mudes os limites antigos, nem ultrapasses as propriedades dos órfãos;
11 for their Defender is strong. He will plead their case against you.
Porque o Defensor deles é poderoso; ele disputará a causa deles contra ti.
12 Apply your heart to instruction, and your ears to the words of knowledge.
Aplica teu coração à disciplina, e teus ouvidos às palavras de conhecimento.
13 Don’t withhold correction from a child. If you punish him with the rod, he will not die.
Não retires a disciplina do jovem; quando lhe bateres com a vara, nem [por isso] morrerá.
Tu lhe baterás com a vara, e livrarás a sua alma do Xeol. (Sheol h7585)
15 My son, if your heart is wise, then my heart will be glad, even mine.
Meu filho, se teu coração for sábio, meu coração se alegrará, e eu também.
16 Yes, my heart will rejoice when your lips speak what is right.
Meu interior saltará de alegria quando teus lábios falarem coisas corretas.
17 Don’t let your heart envy sinners, but rather fear Yahweh all day long.
Teu coração não inveje aos pecadores; porém [permanece] no temor ao SENHOR o dia todo;
18 Indeed surely there is a future hope, and your hope will not be cut off.
Porque certamente há um [bom] futuro [para ti], e tua expectativa não será cortada.
19 Listen, my son, and be wise, and keep your heart on the right path!
Ouve, filho meu, e sê sábio; e conduz teu coração no caminho [correto].
20 Don’t be among ones drinking too much wine, or those who gorge themselves on meat;
Não esteja entre os beberrões de vinho, [nem] entre os comilões de carne.
21 for the drunkard and the glutton shall become poor; and drowsiness clothes them in rags.
Porque o beberrão e o comilão empobrecerão; e a sonolência os faz vestir trapos.
22 Listen to your father who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother when she is old.
Ouve a teu pai, que te gerou; e não desprezes a tua mãe, quando ela envelhecer.
23 Buy the truth, and don’t sell it. Get wisdom, discipline, and understanding.
Compra a verdade, e não a vendas; [faze o mesmo com] a sabedoria, a disciplina e a prudência.
24 The father of the righteous has great joy. Whoever fathers a wise child delights in him.
O pai do justo muito se alegrará; aquele que gerar o sábio se encherá de alegria por causa dele.
25 Let your father and your mother be glad! Let her who bore you rejoice!
Teu pai e tua mãe se alegrarão; aquela te te gerou se encherá de alegria.
26 My son, give me your heart; and let your eyes keep in my ways.
Meu filho, dá para mim teu coração, e que teus olhos prestem atenção em meus caminhos.
27 For a prostitute is a deep pit; and a wayward wife is a narrow well.
Porque a prostituta é [como] uma cova profunda, e a estranha [como] um poço estreito.
28 Yes, she lies in wait like a robber, and increases the unfaithful among men.
Também ela fica espreitando como um ladrão, e acrescenta transgressores entre os homens.
29 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has strife? Who has complaints? Who has needless bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes?
De quem são os ais? De quem são os sofrimentos? De quem são as lutas? De quem são as queixas? De quem são as feridas desnecessárias? De quem são os olhos vermelhos?
30 Those who stay long at the wine; those who go to seek out mixed wine.
São daqueles que gastam tempo junto ao vinho, daqueles que andam em busca da bebida misturada.
31 Don’t look at the wine when it is red, when it sparkles in the cup, when it goes down smoothly.
Não prestes atenção ao vinho quando se mostra vermelho, quando brilha no copo e escorre suavemente,
32 In the end, it bites like a snake, and poisons like a viper.
[Pois] seu fim é [como] mordida de cobra, e picará como uma víbora.
33 Your eyes will see strange things, and your mind will imagine confusing things.
Teus olhos verão [coisas] estranhas, e teu coração falará perversidades;
34 Yes, you will be as he who lies down in the middle of the sea, or as he who lies on top of the rigging:
E serás como o que dorme no meio do mar, e como o que dorme no topo do mastro.
35 “They hit me, and I was not hurt! They beat me, and I don’t feel it! When will I wake up? I can do it again. I will look for more.”
[E dirás]: Espancaram-me, mas não senti dor; bateram em mim, mas não senti; quando virei a despertar? Vou buscar mais uma [bebida].
