Matthew 3
1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
E naqueles dias veio João Batista, pregando no deserto da Judeia,
2 “Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!”
E dizendo: Arrependei-vos, porque perto está o Reino dos céus.
3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make the way of the Lord ready! Make his paths straight!”
Porque este é aquele que foi declarado pelo profeta Isaías, que disse: Voz do que clama no deserto: “Preparai o caminho do Senhor; endireitai suas veredas”.
4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel’s hair with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
Este João tinha sua roupa de pelos de camelo e um cinto de couro ao redor de sua cintura, e seu alimento era gafanhotos e mel silvestre.
5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.
Então vinham até ele [moradores] de Jerusalém, de toda a Judeia, e de toda a região próxima do Jordão;
6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
E eram por ele batizados no rio Jordão, confessando os seus pecados.
7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
Mas quando ele viu muitos dos fariseus e dos saduceus que vinham ao batismo, disse-lhes: Ninhada de víboras! Quem vos ensinou a fugir da ira futura?
8 Therefore produce fruit worthy of repentance!
Dai, pois, fruto condizente com o arrependimento.
9 Don’t think to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham for our father,’ for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
E não imagineis, dizendo em vós mesmos: “Temos por pai a Abraão”, porque eu vos digo que até destas pedras Deus pode fazer surgir filhos a Abraão.
10 Even now the ax lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn’t produce good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.
E agora o machado está posto à raiz das árvores; portanto toda árvore que não dá bom fruto é cortada e lançada ao fogo.
11 “I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
Realmente eu vos batizo com água para arrependimento, mas aquele que vem após mim é mais poderoso do que eu; suas sandálias não sou digno de levar. Ele vos batizará com o Espírito Santo e com fogo.
12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire.”
Ele tem sua pá na mão; limpará sua eira, e recolherá seu trigo no celeiro; mas queimará a palha com fogo que nunca se apaga.
13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
Então Jesus veio da Galileia ao Jordão até João para ser por ele batizado.
14 But John would have hindered him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?”
Mas [João] lhe impedia, dizendo: Eu preciso ser batizado por ti, e tu vens a mim?
15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, “Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he allowed him.
Porém Jesus lhe respondeu: Permite por agora, porque assim nos convém cumprir toda a justiça. Então ele o permitiu.
16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
E tendo Jesus sido batizado, subiu logo da água. E eis que os céus se abriram, e ele viu o Espírito de Deus descendo como uma pomba, vindo sobre ele.
17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.”
E eis uma voz dos céus, dizendo: Este é o meu Filho amado, em quem me agrado.
