John 11
1 Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus from Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister, Martha.
Il y avait un homme malade, nommé Lazare, qui était de Béthanie, village de Marie et de Marthe, sa soeur.
2 It was that Mary who had anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.
Marie est celle qui oignit de parfum le Seigneur, et lui essuya les pieds avec ses cheveux; et c'était son frère Lazare qui était malade.
3 The sisters therefore sent to him, saying, “Lord, behold, he for whom you have great affection is sick.”
Les soeurs donc envoyèrent dire à Jésus: «Seigneur, celui que tu aimes est malade.»
4 But when Jesus heard it, he said, “This sickness is not to death, but for the glory of God, that God’s Son may be glorified by it.”
Jésus, ayant entendu ces paroles, dit: «Cette maladie ne va point à la mort, mais elle est pour la gloire de Dieu, afin que le Fils de Dieu soit glorifié par elle.»
5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.
Or Jésus aimait Marthe, et sa soeur, et Lazare.
6 When therefore he heard that he was sick, he stayed two days in the place where he was.
Lorsqu'il eut appris que Lazare était malade, il resta encore deux jours dans le lieu où il était;
7 Then after this he said to the disciples, “Let’s go into Judea again.”
puis, ce temps écoulé, il dit à ses disciples: «Retournons eu Judée.»
8 The disciples asked him, “Rabbi, the Jews were just trying to stone you. Are you going there again?”
Les disciples lui dirent: «Maître, il n'y a que peu de temps que les Juifs cherchaient à te lapider, et tu retournes en Judée?»
9 Jesus answered, “Aren’t there twelve hours of daylight? If a man walks in the day, he doesn’t stumble, because he sees the light of this world.
Jésus répondit: «N'y a-t-il pas douze heures au jour? Si l’on marche pendant le jour, on ne se heurte point, parce qu'on voit la lumière de ce monde;
10 But if a man walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light isn’t in him.”
mais si l’on marche pendant la nuit, on se heurte, parce qu'on manque de lumière.»
11 He said these things, and after that, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going so that I may awake him out of sleep.”
Il parla ainsi, et ajouta: «Lazare, notre ami, dort; mais je vais l'éveiller.»
12 The disciples therefore said, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.”
«Les disciples lui dirent: «Seigneur, s'il dort, il sera guéri; »
13 Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he spoke of taking rest in sleep.
mais Jésus avait parlé de sa mort, et eux avaient cru qu'il parlait du repos du sommeil.
14 So Jesus said to them plainly then, “Lazarus is dead.
Alors Jésus leur dit ouvertement: «Lazare est mort;
15 I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, so that you may believe. Nevertheless, let’s go to him.”
et je me réjouis à cause de vous de ce que je n'étais pas là, afin que vous croyiez; mais allons vers lui.»
16 Thomas therefore, who is called Didymus, said to his fellow disciples, “Let’s also go, that we may die with him.”
Sur quoi Thomas, qui est appelé Didyme, dit aux autres disciples: «Allons-y aussi, afin de mourir avec lui.»
17 So when Jesus came, he found that he had been in the tomb four days already.
Jésus étant arrivé, trouva qu'il y avait déjà quatre jours que Lazare était dans le sépulcre;
18 Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, about fifteen stadia away.
et, comme Béthanie n'était éloigné de Jérusalem que de quinze stades environ,
19 Many of the Jews had joined the women around Martha and Mary, to console them concerning their brother.
beaucoup de Juifs étaient venus voir Marthe et Marie pour les consoler de la mort de leur frère.
20 Then when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went and met him, but Mary stayed in the house.
Dès que Marthe eut appris que Jésus venait, elle alla au-devant de lui; pour Marie, elle était assise à la maison.
21 Therefore Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.
Marthe dit donc à Jésus: «Seigneur, si tu eusses été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort;
22 Even now I know that whatever you ask of God, God will give you.”
mais, maintenant même, je sais que tout ce que tu demanderas à Dieu, Dieu te l'accordera.»
23 Jesus said to her, “Your brother will rise again.”
Jésus lui dit: «Ton frère ressuscitera.»
24 Martha said to him, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.”
— «Je sais, reprit Marthe, qu'il ressuscitera, lors de la résurrection, au dernier jour.»
25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
Jésus lui repartit: «Je suis la résurrection et la vie: celui qui croit en moi, vivra, quand même il serait mort,
et quiconque vit et croit en moi, ne mourra point pour toujours. Crois-tu cela?» (aiōn g165)
27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world.”
Elle lui dit: «Oui, Seigneur, je crois que tu es le Messie, le Fils de Dieu, celui qui devait venir dans le monde.»
28 When she had said this, she went away and called Mary, her sister, secretly, saying, “The Teacher is here and is calling you.”
Ayant ainsi parlé, elle s'en alla, et appela en secret Marie, sa soeur, disant: «Le maître est là, et il te demande.»
29 When she heard this, she arose quickly and went to him.
Dès que Marie l'eut entendue, elle se leva promptement et alla vers lui.
30 Now Jesus had not yet come into the village, but was in the place where Martha met him.
Or Jésus n'était pas encore entré dans le village, mais il était à l'endroit où Marthe l'avait rencontré.
31 Then the Jews who were with her in the house and were consoling her, when they saw Mary, that she rose up quickly and went out, followed her, saying, “She is going to the tomb to weep there.”
Les Juifs qui étaient avec Marie, dans la maison, et qui la consolaient, la voyant se lever promptement et sortir, la suivirent, disant: «Elle va au sépulcre pour y pleurer.»
32 Therefore when Mary came to where Jesus was and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying to him, “Lord, if you would have been here, my brother wouldn’t have died.”
Dès que Marie fut arrivée à l'endroit où était Jésus, et qu'elle le vit, elle tomba à ses pieds, et lui dit: «Seigneur, si tu eusses été ici, mon frère ne serait pas mort.»
33 When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews weeping who came with her, he groaned in the spirit and was troubled,
Lorsque Jésus la vit pleurer, elle et les Juifs qui l'accompagnaient, il frémit intérieurement, et, se laissant aller à son émotion,
34 and said, “Where have you laid him?” They told him, “Lord, come and see.”
il dit: «où l'avez-vous mis?» Ils lui dirent: «Seigneur, viens et vois.»
35 Jesus wept.
Jésus pleura.
36 The Jews therefore said, “See how much affection he had for him!”
Les Juifs disaient donc: «Voyez comme il l'aimait.»
37 Some of them said, “Couldn’t this man, who opened the eyes of him who was blind, have also kept this man from dying?”
Toutefois quelques-uns d'entre eux dirent: «Lui, qui a ouvert les yeux de l'aveugle, ne pouvait-il pas faire aussi que celui-ci ne mourût pas?»
38 Jesus therefore, again groaning in himself, came to the tomb. Now it was a cave, and a stone lay against it.
Jésus, frémissant de nouveau en lui-même, se rend au sépulcre: c'était un caveau, et une pierre était posée dessus.
39 Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.”
Jésus dit: «Otez la pierre.» La soeur du mort, Marthe, lui dit: «Seigneur, il a déjà de l'odeur; car il y a quatre jours qu'il est là.»
40 Jesus said to her, “Didn’t I tell you that if you believed, you would see God’s glory?”
Jésus lui repartit: «Ne t'ai-je pas dit que si tu crois, tu terras la gloire de Dieu?»
41 So they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. Jesus lifted up his eyes and said, “Father, I thank you that you listened to me.
Ils ôtèrent donc la pierre; alors Jésus, levant les yeux en haut, dit: «Père, je te rends grâce de ce que tu m'as exaucé.
42 I know that you always listen to me, but because of the multitude standing around I said this, that they may believe that you sent me.”
Pour moi, je savais bien que tu m'exauces toujours, mais je dis cela à cause de cette foule qui m'entoure, afin qu'elle croie que c'est toi qui m'as envoyé.»
43 When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!”
Ayant ainsi parlé, il cria d'une voix forte: «Lazare, sors; »
44 He who was dead came out, bound hand and foot with wrappings, and his face was wrapped around with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Free him, and let him go.”
et le mort sortit, les mains et les pieds liés de bandelettes, et le visage enveloppé d'un suaire. Jésus leur dit: «Déliez-le, et le laissez aller.»
45 Therefore many of the Jews who came to Mary and saw what Jesus did believed in him.
Un grand nombre de Juifs, la plupart de ceux qui étaient venus visiter Marie et avaient vu ce miracle de Jésus, crurent en lui;
46 But some of them went away to the Pharisees and told them the things which Jesus had done.
quelques-uns d'entre eux, cependant, allèrent trouver les pharisiens et leur rapportèrent ce que Jésus avait fait.
47 The chief priests therefore and the Pharisees gathered a council, and said, “What are we doing? For this man does many signs.
Alors les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens assemblèrent le Sanhédrin et dirent: «Que ferons-nous? car cet homme opère beaucoup de miracles;
48 If we leave him alone like this, everyone will believe in him, and the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation.”
si nous le laissons faire, tout le monde croira en lui, et les Romains viendront, et ils détruiront notre temple et notre nation.»
49 But a certain one of them, Caiaphas, being high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all,
L'un d'eux, nommé Caïphe, souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, leur dit: «Vous n'y entendez rien;
50 nor do you consider that it is advantageous for us that one man should die for the people, and that the whole nation not perish.”
vous ne réfléchissez pas qu'il nous est avantageux qu'un seul homme meure pour le peuple, et que toute la nation ne périsse pas.»
51 Now he didn’t say this of himself, but being high priest that year, he prophesied that Jesus would die for the nation,
Or, il ne dit pas cela de son propre mouvement, mais comme il était souverain sacrificateur cette année-là, il prophétisa que Jésus devait mourir pour la nation;
52 and not for the nation only, but that he might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad.
mais non pas pour la nation seulement, car c'était aussi afin de réunir en un seul corps les enfants de Dieu qui sont dispersés.
53 So from that day forward they took counsel that they might put him to death.
Dès ce jour, ils délibérèrent de le faire mourir;
54 Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews, but departed from there into the country near the wilderness, to a city called Ephraim. He stayed there with his disciples.
c'est pourquoi Jésus ne se montra plus en public parmi les Juifs, et s'en alla dans les campagnes de la Judée, près du désert, à Ephraïm-la-Ville, où il séjourna avec ses disciples.
55 Now the Passover of the Jews was at hand. Many went up from the country to Jerusalem before the Passover, to purify themselves.
Cependant la Pâque des Juifs était proche, et beaucoup de gens montèrent des campagnes de la Judée à Jérusalem, avant la Pâque, pour se purifier.
56 Then they sought for Jesus and spoke with one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think—that he isn’t coming to the feast at all?”
Ils cherchaient Jésus, et, étant dans le temple, ils se disaient entre eux: «Qu'en pensez-vous? Ne viendra-t-il pas à la fête?»
57 Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had commanded that if anyone knew where he was, he should report it, that they might seize him.
Or les principaux sacrificateurs et les pharisiens avaient donné l'ordre que si l'on savait où il était, on eût à le déclarer, afin qu'ils le fissent prendre.
