Luke 1
1 To his Excellency, Theophilus. Many attempts have been already made to draw up an account of those events which have reached their conclusion among us,
Tendo pois muitos empreendido pôr em ordem a narração das coisas que entre nós se cumpriram,
2 just as they were reported to us by those who from the beginning were eye-witnesses, and afterwards became bearers of the Message.
Segundo nos transmitiram os mesmos que as viram desde o princípio, e foram ministros da palavra,
3 And, therefore, I also, since I have investigated all these events with great care from their very beginning, have resolved to write a connected history of them for you,
Pareceu-me também a mim conveniente escreve-las a ti, ó excelente Theophilo, por sua ordem, havendo-me já informado minuciosamente de tudo desde o princípio;
4 in order that you may be able to satisfy yourself of the accuracy of the story which you have heard from the lips of others.
Para que conheças a certeza das coisas de que já estás informado.
5 In the reign of Herod, King of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the Division called after Abijah. His wife, whose name was Elizabeth, was also a descendant of Aaron.
Existiu, no tempo de Herodes, rei da Judeia, um sacerdote chamado Zacarias, da ordem de Abias, e cuja mulher era das filhas de Aarão; e o seu nome era Isabel.
6 They were both righteous people, who lived blameless lives, guiding their steps by all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord.
E eram ambos justos perante Deus, andando sem repreensão em todos os mandamentos e preceitos do Senhor.
7 But they had no child, Elizabeth being barren; and both of them were advanced in years.
E não tinham filhos, porquanto Isabel era estéril, e ambos eram avançados em idade.
8 One day, when Zechariah was officiating as priest before God, during the turn of his Division,
E aconteceu que, exercendo ele o sacerdócio diante de Deus, na ordem da sua turma,
9 it fell to him by lot, in accordance with the practice among the priests, to go into the Temple of the Lord and burn incense;
Segundo o costume sacerdotal, coube-lhe em sorte entrar no templo do Senhor a oferecer o incenso.
10 and, as it was the Hour of Incense, the people were all praying outside.
E toda a multidão do povo estava fora, orando à hora do incenso,
11 And an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing on the right of the Altar of Incense.
E um anjo do Senhor lhe apareceu, posto em pé, à direita do altar do incenso.
12 Zechariah was startled at the sight and was awe-struck.
E Zacarias, vendo-o, turbou-se, e caiu temor sobre ele.
13 But the angel said to him: “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard, and your wife Elizabeth shall bear you a son, whom you shall call by the name John.
Mas o anjo lhe disse: Zacarias, não temas, porque a tua oração foi ouvida, e Isabel, tua mulher, dará à luz um filho, e lhe porás o nome de João;
14 He shall be to you a joy and a delight; and many shall rejoice over his birth.
E terás prazer e alegria, e muitos se alegrarão no seu nascimento;
15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord; he shall not drink any wine or strong drink, and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit from the very hour of his birth,
Porque será grande diante do Senhor, e não beberá vinho, nem bebida forte, e será cheio do Espírito Santo, até desde o ventre de sua mãe;
16 and shall reconcile many of the Israelites to the Lord their God.
E converterá muitos dos filhos de Israel ao Senhor seu Deus;
17 He shall go before him in the spirit and with the power of Elijah, ‘to reconcile fathers to their children’ and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous, and so make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him.”
E irá adiante dele no espírito e virtude de Elias, para converter os corações dos pais aos filhos, e os rebeldes à prudência dos justos; para preparar ao Senhor um povo bem disposto.
18 “How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel. “For I am an old man and my wife is advanced in years.”
Disse então Zacarias ao anjo: Como conhecerei isto? pois eu já sou velho, e minha mulher avançada em idade.
19 “I am Gabriel,” the angel answered, “who stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news.
E, respondendo o anjo, disse-lhe: Eu sou Gabriel, que assisto diante de Deus, e fui enviado a falar-te e dar-te estas alegres novas;
20 And now you shall be silent and unable to speak until the day when this takes place, because you did not believe what I said, though my words will be fulfilled in due course.”
E eis que ficarás mudo, e não poderás falar até ao dia em que estas coisas aconteçam; porquanto não creeste nas minhas palavras, que a seu tempo se hão de cumprir
21 Meanwhile the people were watching for Zechariah, wondering at his remaining so long in the Temple.
E o povo estava esperando a Zacarias, e maravilhavam-se de que tanto se demorasse no templo.
22 When he came out, he was unable to speak to them, and they perceived that he had seen a vision there. But Zechariah kept making signs to them, and remained dumb.
E, saindo ele, não lhes podia falar; e entenderam que tinha visto alguma visão no templo. E falava por acenos, e ficou mudo.
23 And, as soon as his term of service was finished, he returned home.
E sucedeu que, terminados os dias do seu ministério, voltou para sua casa.
24 After this his wife, Elizabeth, expecting to become a mother, lived in seclusion for five months.
E depois daqueles dias Isabel, sua mulher, concebeu, e por cinco meses se ocultou, dizendo:
25 “This is what the Lord has done for me,” she said, “now that he has deigned to take away the reproach under which I have been living.”
Porque isto me fez o Senhor, nos dias em que atentou em mim, para destruir o meu opróbrio entre os homens.
26 Six months later the angel Gabriel was sent from God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth,
E, no sexto mes, foi o anjo Gabriel enviado por Deus a uma cidade da Galiléia, chamada Nazareth,
27 to a maiden there who was betrothed to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. Her name was Mary.
A uma virgem desposada com um varão, cujo nome era José, da casa de David; e o nome da virgem era Maria.
28 Gabriel came into her presence and said: “Hail, you who have been highly favoured! The Lord is with you.”
E, entrando o anjo aonde ela estava, disse: Salve, agraciada; o Senhor é contigo: bendita tu entre as mulheres.
29 Mary was much disturbed at his words, and was wondering to herself what such a greeting could mean,
E, vendo-o ela, turbou-se muito das suas palavras, e considerava que saudação seria esta.
30 when the angel spoke again: “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with God.
Disse-lhe então o anjo: Maria, não temas, porque achaste graça diante de Deus;
31 And now, you shall be with child and give birth to a son, and you shall give him the name Jesus.
E eis que em teu ventre conceberás, e darás à luz um filho, e pôr-lhe-as o nome de Jesus.
32 The child shall be great and shall be called ‘Son of the Most High,’ and the Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David,
Este será grande, e será chamado filho do altíssimo; e o Senhor Deus lhe dará o trono de David, seu pai;
33 and he shall reign over the descendants of Jacob for ever; And to his kingdom there shall be no end.” (aiōn g165)
E reinará eternamente na casa de Jacob, e o seu reino não terá fim. (aiōn g165)
34 “How can this be?” Mary asked the angel. “For I have no husband.”
E disse Maria ao anjo: Como se fará isto? pois não conheço varão.
35 “The Holy Spirit shall descend upon you,” answered the angel, “and the Power of the Most High shall overshadow you; and therefore the child will be called ‘holy,’ and ‘Son of God.’
E, respondendo o anjo, disse-lhe: Descerá sobre ti o Espírito Santo, e a virtude do altíssimo te cobrirá com a sua sombra; pelo que também o Santo, que de ti há de nascer, será chamado Filho de Deus.
36 And Elizabeth, your cousin, is herself also expecting a son in her old age; and it is now the sixth month with her, though she is called barren;
E eis que também Isabel, tua prima, concebeu um filho em sua velhice; e é este o sexto mês para aquela que era chamada estéril;
37 for no promise from God shall fail to be fulfilled.”
Porque para Deus nada será impossível.
38 “I am the servant of the Lord,” exclaimed Mary; “let it be with me as you have said.” Then the angel left her.
Disse então Maria: Eis aqui a serva do Senhor; cumpra-se em mim segundo a tua palavra. E o anjo ausentou-se dela.
39 Soon after this Mary set out, and made her way quickly into the hill-country, to a town in Judah;
E naqueles dias, levantando-se Maria, foi apressada às montanhas, a uma cidade de Juda,
40 and there she went into Zechariah’s house and greeted Elizabeth.
E entrou em casa de Zacarias, e saudou a Isabel.
41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the child moved within her, and Elizabeth herself was filled with the Holy Spirit,
E aconteceu que, ao ouvir Isabel a saudação de Maria, a criancinha saltou no seu ventre; e Isabel foi cheia do Espírito Santo,
42 and cried aloud: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is your unborn child!
E exclamou com grande voz, e disse: bendita tu entre as mulheres, e bendito o fruto do teu ventre.
43 But how have I this honour, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
E de onde me provém isto a mim, que a mãe do meu Senhor venha a mim?
44 For, as soon as your greeting reached my ears, the child moved within me with delight!
Pois eis que, ao chegar aos meus ouvidos a voz da tua saudação, a criancinha saltou de alegria no meu ventre;
45 Happy indeed is she who believed that the promise which she received from the Lord would be fulfilled.”
E benaventurada a que creu, pois hão de cumprir-se as coisas que da parte do Senhor lhe foram ditas.
46 And Mary said: “My soul exalts the Lord,
Disse então Maria: A minha alma engrandece ao Senhor,
47 my spirit delights in God my Saviour;
E o meu espírito se alegra em Deus meu Salvador;
48 for he has remembered his servant in her lowliness; And from this hour all ages will count me happy!
Porque atentou na baixeza de sua serva; pois eis que desde agora todas as gerações me chamarão benaventurada:
49 Great things has the Almighty done for me; And holy is his name.
Porque me fez grandes coisas o Poderoso; e santo é o seu nome.
50 From age to age his mercy rests On those who reverence him.
E a sua misericórdia é de geração em geração sobre os que o temem.
51 Mighty are the deeds of his arm; He scatters the proud with their own devices,
Com o seu braço obrou valorosamente: dissipou os soberbos no pensamento de seus corações.
52 he casts down princes from their thrones, and the lowly he uplifts,
Depôs dos tronos os poderosos, e elevou os humildes.
53 the hungry he loads with gifts, and the rich he sends empty away.
Encheu de bens os famintos, e despediu vazios os ricos.
54 He has stretched out his hand to his servant Israel, Ever mindful of his mercy
Auxiliou a Israel seu servo, recordando-se da sua misericórdia;
Como falou a nossos pais, a Abraão e à sua posteridade, para sempre. (aiōn g165)
56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned to her home.
E Maria ficou com ela quase três meses, e depois voltou para sua casa.
57 When Elizabeth’s time came, she gave birth to a son;
E completou-se para Isabel o tempo de dar à luz, e teve um filho.
58 and her neighbours and relations, hearing of the great goodness of the Lord to her, came to share her joy.
E os seus vizinhos e parentes ouviram que tinha Deus usado para com ela de grande misericórdia, e alegraram-se com ela.
59 A week later they met to circumcise the child, and were about to call him ‘Zechariah’ after his father,
E aconteceu que, ao oitavo dia, vieram circuncidar o menino, e lhe chamavam Zacarias, do nome de seu pai.
60 when his mother interposed: “No, he is to be called John.”
E, respondendo sua mãe, disse: Não, porém será chamado João.
61 “You have no relation of that name!” they exclaimed;
E disseram-lhe: ninguém há na tua parentela que se chame por este nome.
62 and they made signs to the child’s father, to find out what he wished the child to be called.
E perguntaram por acenos ao pai como queria que lhe chamassem.
63 Asking for a writing-tablet, he wrote the words — ‘His name is John.’ Every one was surprised;
E, pedindo ele uma taboinha de escrever, escreveu, dizendo: O seu nome é João. E todos se maravilharam.
64 and immediately Zechariah recovered his voice and the use of his tongue, and began to bless God.
E logo a boca se lhe abriu, e a língua se lhe soltou; e falava, louvando a Deus.
65 All their neighbours were awe-struck at this; and throughout the hill-country of Judea the whole story was much talked about;
E veio temor sobre todos os seus circunvizinhos, e em todas as montanhas da Judeia foram divulgadas todas estas coisas.
66 and all who heard it kept it in mind, asking one another — “What can this child be destined to become?” For the Power of the Lord was with him.
E todos os que as ouviam as conservavam em seus corações, dizendo: Quem será pois este menino? E a mão do Senhor estava com ele.
67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit, and, speaking under inspiration, said:
E Zacarias, seu pai, foi cheio do Espírito Santo, e profetizou, dizendo:
68 “Blessed is the Lord, the God of Israel, Who has visited his people and wrought their deliverance,
Bendito o Senhor Deus de Israel, porque visitou e remiu o seu povo,
69 and has raised up for us the Strength of our Salvation In the House of his servant David —
E nos levantou uma salvação poderosa na casa de David seu servo,
Como falou pela boca dos seus santos profetas, desde o princípio do mundo; (aiōn g165)
71 Salvation from our enemies and from the hands of all that hate us,
Que nos livraria dos nossos inimigos e da mão de todos os que nos aborrecem;
72 showing mercy to our forefathers, And mindful of his sacred Covenant.
Para manifestar misericórdia a nossos pais, e lembrar-se do seu santo concerto,
73 This was the oath which he swore to our forefather Abraham —
E do juramento que jurou a Abraão nosso pai,
74 That we should be rescued from the hands of our enemies,
De conceder-nos que, libertados da mão de nossos inimigos, o serviríamos sem temor,
75 and should serve him without fear in holiness and righteousness, In his presence all our days.
Em santidade e justiça perante ele, todos os dias da nossa vida.
76 And thou, Child, shalt be called Prophet of the Most High, For thou shalt go before the Lord to make ready his way,
E tu, ó menino, serás chamado profeta do altíssimo, porque as de ir adiante da face do Senhor, a preparar os seus caminhos;
77 to give his people the knowledge of salvation In the forgiveness of their sins,
Para dar ao seu povo conhecimento da salvação, na remissão dos seus pecados;
78 through the tender mercy of our God, Whereby the Dawn will break on us from Heaven,
Pelas entranhas da misericórdia do nosso Deus, com que o Oriente do alto nos visitou;
79 to give light to those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death, And guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Para alumiar aos que estão assentados em trevas e sombra de morte; a fim de dirigir os nossos pés pelo caminho da paz.
80 The child grew and became strong in spirit; and he lived in the Wilds till the time came for his appearance before Israel.
E o menino crescia, e se robustecia em espírito. E esteve nos desertos até ao dia em que havia de mostrar-se a Israel.
