Romans 13
1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.
人はみな、上に立つ権威に従うべきです。神によらない権威はなく、存在している権威はすべて、神によって立てられたものです。
2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.
したがって、権威に逆らっている人は、神の定めにそむいているのです。そむいた人は自分の身にさばきを招きます。
3 For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same:
支配者を恐ろしいと思うのは、良い行ないをするときではなく、悪を行なうときです。権威を恐れたくないと思うなら、善を行ないなさい。そうすれば、支配者からほめられます。
4 For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to [execute] wrath upon him that doeth evil.
それは、彼があなたに益を与えるための、神のしもべだからです。しかし、もしあなたが悪を行なうなら、恐れなければなりません。彼は無意味に剣を帯びてはいないからです。彼は神のしもべであって、悪を行なう人には怒りをもって報います。
5 Wherefore [ye] must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake.
ですから、ただ怒りが恐ろしいからだけでなく、良心のためにも、従うべきです。
6 For for this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing.
同じ理由で、あなたがたは、みつぎを納めるのです。彼らは、いつもその務めに励んでいる神のしもべなのです。
7 Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute [is due]; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.
あなたがたは、だれにでも義務を果たしなさい。みつぎを納めなければならない人にはみつぎを納め、税を納めなければならない人には税を納め、恐れなければならない人を恐れ、敬わなければならない人を敬いなさい。
8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
だれに対しても、何の借りもあってはいけません。ただし、互いに愛し合うことについては別です。他の人を愛する者は、律法を完全に守っているのです。
9 For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and if [there be] any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
「姦淫するな、殺すな、盗むな、むさぼるな。」という戒め、またほかにどんな戒めがあっても、それらは、「あなたの隣人をあなた自身のように愛せよ。」ということばの中に要約されているからです。
10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love [is] the fulfilling of the law.
愛は隣人に対して害を与えません。それゆえ、愛は律法を全うします。
11 And that, knowing the time, that now [it is] high time to awake out of sleep: for now [is] our salvation nearer than when we believed.
あなたがたは、今がどのような時か知っているのですから、このように行ないなさい。あなたがたが眠りからさめるべき時刻がもう来ています。というのは、私たちが信じたころよりも、今は救いが私たちにもっと近づいているからです。
12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.
夜はふけて、昼が近づきました。ですから、私たちは、やみのわざを打ち捨てて、光の武具を着けようではありませんか。
13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying.
遊興、酩酊、淫乱、好色、争い、ねたみの生活ではなく、昼間らしい、正しい生き方をしようではありませんか。
14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to [fulfil] the lusts [thereof.]
主イエス・キリストを着なさい。肉の欲のために心を用いてはいけません。
