Matthew 2
1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem,
イエスが、ヘロデ王の時代に、ユダヤのベツレヘムでお生まれになったとき、見よ、東方の博士たちがエルサレムにやって来て、こう言った。
2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.
「ユダヤ人の王としてお生まれになった方はどこにおいでになりますか。私たちは、東のほうでその方の星を見たので、拝みにまいりました。」
3 When Herod the king had heard [these things], he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.
それを聞いて、ヘロデ王は恐れ惑った。エルサレム中の人も王と同様であった。
4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born.
そこで、王は、民の祭司長たち、学者たちをみな集めて、キリストはどこで生まれるのかと問いただした。
5 And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet,
彼らは王に言った。「ユダヤのベツレヘムです。預言者によってこう書かれているからです。
6 And thou Bethlehem, [in] the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel.
『ユダの地、ベツレヘム。 あなたはユダを治める者たちの中で、 決して一番小さくはない。 わたしの民イスラエルを治める支配者が、 あなたから出るのだから。』」
7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared.
そこで、ヘロデはひそかに博士たちを呼んで、彼らから星の出現の時間を突き止めた。
8 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child; and when ye have found [him], bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also.
そして、こう言って彼らをベツレヘムに送った。「行って幼子のことを詳しく調べ、わかったら知らせてもらいたい。私も行って拝むから。」
9 When they had heard the king, they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was.
彼らは王の言ったことを聞いて出かけた。すると、見よ、東方で見た星が彼らを先導し、ついに幼子のおられる所まで進んで行き、その上にとどまった。
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.
その星を見て、彼らはこの上もなく喜んだ。
11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.
そしてその家にはいって、母マリヤとともにおられる幼子を見、ひれ伏して拝んだ。そして、宝の箱をあけて、黄金、乳香、没薬を贈り物としてささげた。
12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.
それから、夢でヘロデのところへ戻るなという戒めを受けたので、別の道から自分の国へ帰って行った。
13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
彼らが帰って行ったとき、見よ、主の使いが夢でヨセフに現われて言った。「立って、幼子とその母を連れ、エジプトへ逃げなさい。そして、私が知らせるまで、そこにいなさい。ヘロデがこの幼子を捜し出して殺そうとしています。」
14 When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt:
そこで、ヨセフは立って、夜のうちに幼子とその母を連れてエジプトに立ちのき、
15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
ヘロデが死ぬまでそこにいた。これは、主が預言者を通して、「わたしはエジプトから、わたしの子を呼び出した。」と言われた事が成就するためであった。
16 Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men.
その後、ヘロデは、博士たちにだまされたことがわかると、非常におこって、人をやって、ベツレヘムとその近辺の二歳以下の男の子をひとり残らず殺させた。その年令は博士たちから突き止めておいた時間から割り出したのである。
17 Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying,
そのとき、預言者エレミヤを通して言われた事が成就した。
18 In Rama was there a voice heard, lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping [for] her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not.
「ラマで声がする。 泣き、そして嘆き叫ぶ声。 ラケルがその子らのために泣いている。 ラケルは慰められることを拒んだ。 子らがもういないからだ。」
19 But when Herod was dead, behold, an angel of the Lord appeareth in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,
ヘロデが死ぬと、見よ、主の使いが、夢でエジプトにいるヨセフに現われて、言った。
20 Saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and go into the land of Israel: for they are dead which sought the young child’s life.
「立って、幼子とその母を連れて、イスラエルの地に行きなさい。幼子のいのちをつけねらっていた人たちは死にました。」
21 And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.
そこで、彼は立って、幼子とその母を連れて、イスラエルの地にはいった。
22 But when he heard that Archelaus did reign in Judaea in the room of his father Herod, he was afraid to go thither: notwithstanding, being warned of God in a dream, he turned aside into the parts of Galilee:
しかし、アケラオが父ヘロデに代わってユダヤを治めていると聞いたので、そこに行ってとどまることを恐れた。そして、夢で戒めを受けたので、ガリラヤ地方に立ちのいた。
23 And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, He shall be called a Nazarene.
そして、ナザレという町に行って住んだ。これは預言者たちを通して「この方はナザレ人と呼ばれる。」と言われた事が成就するためであった。
