Acts 28
1 And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita.
こうして救われてから、私たちは、ここがマルタと呼ばれる島であることを知った。
2 And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold.
島の人々は私たちに非常に親切にしてくれた。おりから雨が降りだして寒かったので、彼らは火をたいて私たちみなをもてなしてくれた。
3 And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid [them] on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand.
パウロがひとかかえの柴をたばねて火にくべると、熱気のために、一匹のまむしがはい出して来て、彼の手に取りついた。
4 And when the barbarians saw the [venomous] beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live.
島の人々は、この生き物がパウロの手から下がっているのを見て、「この人はきっと人殺しだ。海からはのがれたが、正義の女神はこの人を生かしてはおかないのだ。」と互いに話し合った。
5 And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm.
しかし、パウロは、その生き物を火の中に振り落として、何の害も受けなかった。
6 Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god.
島の人々は、彼が今にも、はれ上がって来るか、または、倒れて急死するだろうと待っていた。しかし、いくら待っても、彼に少しも変わった様子が見えないので、彼らは考えを変えて、「この人は神さまだ。」と言いだした。
7 In the same quarters were possessions of the chief man of the island, whose name was Publius; who received us, and lodged us three days courteously.
さて、その場所の近くに、島の首長でポプリオという人の領地があった。彼はそこに私たちを招待して、三日間手厚くもてなしてくれた。
8 And it came to pass, that the father of Publius lay sick of a fever and of a bloody flux: to whom Paul entered in, and prayed, and laid his hands on him, and healed him.
たまたまポプリオの父が、熱病と下痢とで床に着いていた。そこでパウロは、その人のもとに行き、祈ってから、彼の上に手を置いて直してやった。
9 So when this was done, others also, which had diseases in the island, came, and were healed:
このことがあってから、島のほかの病人たちも来て、直してもらった。
10 Who also honoured us with many honours; and when we departed, they laded [us] with such things as were necessary.
それで彼らは、私たちを非常に尊敬し、私たちが出帆するときには、私たちに必要な品々を用意してくれた。
11 And after three months we departed in a ship of Alexandria, which had wintered in the isle, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.
三か月後に、私たちは、この島で冬を過ごしていた、船首にデオスクロイの飾りのある、アレキサンドリヤの船で出帆した。
12 And landing at Syracuse, we tarried [there] three days.
シラクサに寄港して、三日間とどまり、
13 And from thence we fetched a compass, and came to Rhegium: and after one day the south wind blew, and we came the next day to Puteoli:
そこから回って、レギオンに着いた。一日たつと、南風が吹き始めたので、二日目にはポテオリに入港した。
14 Where we found brethren, and were desired to tarry with them seven days: and so we went toward Rome.
ここで、私たちは兄弟たちに会い、勧められるままに彼らのところに七日間滞在した。こうして、私たちはローマに到着した。
15 And from thence, when the brethren heard of us, they came to meet us as far as Appii forum, and The three taverns: whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.
私たちのことを聞いた兄弟たちは、ローマからアピオ・ポロとトレス・タベルネまで出迎えに来てくれた。パウロは彼らに会って、神に感謝し、勇気づけられた。
16 And when we came to Rome, the centurion delivered the prisoners to the captain of the guard: but Paul was suffered to dwell by himself with a soldier that kept him.
私たちがローマにはいると、パウロは番兵付きで自分だけの家に住むことが許された。
17 And it came to pass, that after three days Paul called the chief of the Jews together: and when they were come together, he said unto them, Men [and] brethren, though I have committed nothing against the people, or customs of our fathers, yet was I delivered prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
三日の後、パウロはユダヤ人のおもだった人たちを呼び集め、彼らが集まったときに、こう言った。「兄弟たち。私は、私の国民に対しても、先祖の慣習に対しても、何一つそむくことはしていないのに、エルサレムで囚人としてローマ人の手に渡されました。
18 Who, when they had examined me, would have let [me] go, because there was no cause of death in me.
ローマ人は私を取り調べましたが、私を死刑にする理由が何もなかったので、私を釈放しようと思ったのです。
19 But when the Jews spake against [it], I was constrained to appeal unto Cæsar; not that I had ought to accuse my nation of.
ところが、ユダヤ人たちが反対したため、私はやむなくカイザルに上訴しました。それは、私の同胞を訴えようとしたのではありません。
20 For this cause therefore have I called for you, to see [you], and to speak with [you]: because that for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.
このようなわけで、私は、あなたがたに会ってお話ししようと思い、お招きしました。私はイスラエルの望みのためにこの鎖につながれているのです。」
21 And they said unto him, We neither received letters out of Judæa concerning thee, neither any of the brethren that came shewed or spake any harm of thee.
すると、彼らはこう言った。「私たちは、あなたのことについて、ユダヤから何の知らせも受けておりません。また、当地に来た兄弟たちの中で、あなたについて悪いことを告げたり、話したりした者はおりません。
22 But we desire to hear of thee what thou thinkest: for as concerning this sect, we know that every where it is spoken against.
私たちは、あなたが考えておられることを、直接あなたから聞くのがよいと思っています。この宗派については、至る所で非難があることを私たちは知っているからです。」
23 And when they had appointed him a day, there came many to him into [his] lodging; to whom he expounded and testified the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus, both out of the law of Moses, and [out of] the prophets, from morning till evening.
そこで、彼らは日を定めて、さらに大ぜいでパウロの宿にやって来た。彼は朝から晩まで語り続けた。神の国のことをあかしし、また、モーセの律法と預言者たちの書によって、イエスのことについて彼らを説得しようとした。
24 And some believed the things which were spoken, and some believed not.
ある人々は彼の語る事を信じたが、ある人々は信じようとしなかった。
25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,
こうして、彼らは、お互いの意見が一致せずに帰りかけたので、パウロは一言、次のように言った。「聖霊が預言者イザヤを通してあなたがたの先祖に語られたことは、まさにそのとおりでした。
26 Saying, Go unto this people, and say, Hearing ye shall hear, and shall not understand; and seeing ye shall see, and not perceive:
『この民のところに行って、告げよ。 あなたがたは確かに聞きはするが、 決して悟らない。 確かに見てはいるが、決してわからない。
27 For the heart of this people is waxed gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with [their] eyes, and hear with [their] ears, and understand with [their] heart, and should be converted, and I should heal them.
この民の心は鈍くなり、 その耳は遠く、 その目はつぶっているからである。 それは、彼らがその目で見、 その耳で聞き、 その心で悟って、立ち返り、 わたしにいやされることのないためである。』
28 Be it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto the Gentiles, and [that] they will hear it.
ですから、承知しておいてください。神のこの救いは、異邦人に送られました。彼らは、耳を傾けるでしょう。」
29 And when he had said these words, the Jews departed, and had great reasoning among themselves.
こうしてパウロは満二年の間、自費で借りた家に住み、たずねて来る人たちをみな迎えて、
30 And Paul dwelt two whole years in his own hired house, and received all that came in unto him,
31 Preaching the kingdom of God, and teaching those things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ, with all confidence, no man forbidding him.
大胆に、少しも妨げられることなく、神の国を宣べ伝え、主イエス・キリストのことを教えた。
