Romans 2

1 Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things.

ですから、すべて他人をさばく人よ。あなたに弁解の余地はありません。あなたは、他人をさばくことによって、自分自身を罪に定めています。さばくあなたが、それと同じことを行なっているからです。

2 But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.

私たちは、そのようなことを行なっている人々に下る神のさばきが正しいことを知っています。

3 And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of God?

そのようなことをしている人々をさばきながら、自分で同じことをしている人よ。あなたは、自分は神のさばきを免れるのだとでも思っているのですか。

4 Or despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance?

それとも、神の慈愛があなたを悔い改めに導くことも知らないで、その豊かな慈愛と忍耐と寛容とを軽んじているのですか。

5 But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;

ところが、あなたは、かたくなさと悔い改めのない心のゆえに、御怒りの日、すなわち、神の正しいさばきの現われる日の御怒りを自分のために積み上げているのです。

6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds:

神は、ひとりひとりに、その人の行ないに従って報いをお与えになります。

7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: (aiōnios g166)

忍耐をもって善を行ない、栄光と誉れと不滅のものとを求める者には、永遠のいのちを与え、 (aiōnios g166)

8 But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,

党派心を持ち、真理に従わないで不義に従う者には、怒りと憤りを下されるのです。

9 Tribulation and anguish, upon every soul of man that doeth evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;

患難と苦悩とは、ユダヤ人をはじめギリシヤ人にも、悪を行なうすべての者の上に下り、

10 But glory, honour, and peace, to every man that worketh good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:

栄光と誉れと平和は、ユダヤ人をはじめギリシヤ人にも、善を行なうすべての者の上にあります。

11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

神にはえこひいきなどはないからです。

12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

律法なしに罪を犯した者はすべて、律法なしに滅び、律法の下にあって罪を犯した者はすべて、律法によってさばかれます。

13 (For not the hearers of the law [are] just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

それは、律法を聞く者が神の前に正しいのではなく、律法を行なう者が正しいと認められるからです。

14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:

――律法を持たない異邦人が、生まれつきのままで律法の命じる行ないをするばあいは、律法を持たなくても、自分自身が自分に対する律法なのです。

15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and [their] thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another; )

彼らはこのようにして、律法の命じる行ないが彼らの心に書かれていることを示しています。彼らの良心もいっしょになってあかしし、また、彼らの思いは互いに責め合ったり、また、弁明し合ったりしています。――

16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

私の福音によれば、神のさばきは、神がキリスト・イエスによって人々の隠れたことをさばかれる日に、行なわれるのです。

17 Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God,

もし、あなたが自分をユダヤ人ととなえ、律法を持つことに安んじ、神を誇り、

18 And knowest [his] will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law;

みこころを知り、なすべきことが何であるかを律法に教えられてわきまえ、

19 And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness,

また、知識と真理の具体的な形として律法を持っているため、盲人の案内人、やみの中にいる者の光、愚かな者の導き手、幼子の教師だと自任しているのなら、

20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.

21 Thou therefore which teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal?

どうして、人を教えながら、自分自身を教えないのですか。盗むなと説きながら、自分は盗むのですか。

22 Thou that sayest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adultery? thou that abhorrest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege?

姦淫するなと言いながら、自分は姦淫するのですか。偶像を忌みきらいながら、自分は神殿の物をかすめるのですか。

23 Thou that makest thy boast of the law, through breaking the law dishonourest thou God?

律法を誇りとしているあなたが、どうして律法に違反して、神を侮るのですか。

24 For the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles through you, as it is written.

これは、「神の名は、あなたがたのゆえに、異邦人の中でけがされている。」と書いてあるとおりです。

25 For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision.

もし律法を守るなら、割礼には価値があります。しかし、もしあなたが律法にそむいているなら、あなたの割礼は、無割礼になったのです。

26 Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

もし割礼を受けていない人が律法の規定を守るなら、割礼を受けていなくても、割礼を受けている者とみなされないでしょうか。

27 And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law?

また、からだに割礼を受けていないで律法を守る者が、律法の文字と割礼がありながら律法にそむいているあなたを、さばくことにならないでしょうか。

28 For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither [is that] circumcision, which is outward in the flesh:

外見上のユダヤ人がユダヤ人なのではなく、外見上のからだの割礼が割礼なのではありません。

29 But he [is] a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision [is that] of the heart, in the spirit, [and] not in the letter; whose praise [is] not of men, but of God.

かえって人目に隠れたユダヤ人がユダヤ人であり、文字ではなく、御霊による、心の割礼こそ割礼です。その誉れは、人からではなく、神から来るものです。
