Acts 22
1 Men, brethren, and fathers, hear ye my defence [which I make] now unto you.
「兄弟たち、父たちよ。いま私が皆さんにしようとする弁明を聞いてください。」
2 (And when they heard that he spake in the Hebrew tongue to them, they kept the more silence: and he saith, )
パウロがヘブル語で語りかけるのを聞いて、人々はますます静粛になった。そこでパウロは話し続けた。
3 I am verily a man [which am] a Jew, born in Tarsus, [a city] in Cilicia, yet brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, [and] taught according to the perfect manner of the law of the fathers, and was zealous toward God, as ye all are this day.
「私はキリキヤのタルソで生まれたユダヤ人ですが、この町で育てられ、ガマリエルのもとで私たちの先祖の律法について厳格な教育を受け、今日の皆さんと同じように、神に対して熱心な者でした。
4 And I persecuted this way unto the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women.
私はこの道を迫害し、男も女も縛って牢に投じ、死にまでも至らせたのです。
5 As also the high priest doth bear me witness, and all the estate of the elders: from whom also I received letters unto the brethren, and went to Damascus, to bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem, for to be punished.
このことは、大祭司も、長老たちの全議会も証言してくれます。この人たちから、私は兄弟たちへあてた手紙までも受け取り、ダマスコへ向かって出発しました。そこにいる者たちを縛り上げ、エルサレムに連れて来て処罰するためでした。
6 And it came to pass, that, as I made my journey, and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me.
ところが、旅を続けて、真昼ごろダマスコに近づいたとき、突然、天からまばゆい光が私の回りを照らしたのです。
7 And I fell unto the ground, and heard a voice saying unto me, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?
私は地に倒れ、『サウロ、サウロ。なぜわたしを迫害するのか。』という声を聞きました。
8 And I answered, Who art thou, Lord? And he said unto me, I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest.
そこで私が答えて、『主よ。あなたはどなたですか。』と言うと、その方は、『わたしは、あなたが迫害しているナザレのイエスだ。』と言われました。
9 And they that were with me saw indeed the light, and were afraid; but they heard not the voice of him that spake to me.
私といっしょにいた者たちは、その光は見たのですが、私に語っている方の声は聞き分けられませんでした。
10 And I said, What shall I do, Lord? And the Lord said unto me, Arise, and go into Damascus; and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do.
私が、『主よ。私はどうしたらよいのでしょうか。』と尋ねると、主は私に、『起きて、ダマスコに行きなさい。あなたがするように決められていることはみな、そこで告げられる。』と言われました。
11 And when I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus.
ところが、その光の輝きのために、私の目は何も見えなかったので、いっしょにいた者たちに手を引かれてダマスコにはいりました。
12 And one Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwelt [there],
すると、律法を重んじる敬虔な人で、そこに住むユダヤ人全体の間で評判の良いアナニヤという人が、
13 Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight. And the same hour I looked up upon him.
私のところに来て、そばに立ち、『兄弟サウロ。見えるようになりなさい。』と言いました。すると、そのとき、私はその人が見えるようになりました。
14 And he said, The God of our fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldest know his will, and see that Just One, and shouldest hear the voice of his mouth.
彼はこう言いました。『私たちの先祖の神は、あなたにみこころを知らせ、義なる方を見させ、その方の口から御声を聞かせようとお定めになったのです。
15 For thou shalt be his witness unto all men of what thou hast seen and heard.
あなたはその方のために、すべての人に対して、あなたの見たこと、聞いたことの証人とされるのですから。
16 And now why tarriest thou? arise, and be baptized, and wash away thy sins, calling on the name of the Lord.
さあ、なぜためらっているのですか。立ちなさい。その御名を呼んでバプテスマを受け、自分の罪を洗い流しなさい。』
17 And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;
こうして私がエルサレムに帰り、宮で祈っていますと、夢ごこちになり、
18 And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.
主を見たのです。主は言われました。『急いで、早くエルサレムを離れなさい。人々がわたしについてのあなたのあかしを受け入れないからです。』
19 And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:
そこで私は答えました。『主よ。私がどの会堂ででも、あなたの信者を牢に入れたり、むち打ったりしていたことを、彼らはよく知っています。
20 And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.
また、あなたの証人ステパノの血が流されたとき、私もその場にいて、それに賛成し、彼を殺した者たちの着物の番をしていたのです。』
21 And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.
すると、主は私に、『行きなさい。わたしはあなたを遠く、異邦人に遣わす。』と言われました。」
22 And they gave him audience unto this word, and [then] lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a [fellow] from the earth: for it is not fit that he should live.
人々は、彼の話をここまで聞いていたが、このとき声を張り上げて、「こんな男は、地上から除いてしまえ。生かしておくべきではない。」と言った。
23 And as they cried out, and cast off [their] clothes, and threw dust into the air,
そして、人々がわめき立て、着物を放り投げ、ちりを空中にまき散らすので、
24 The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.
千人隊長はパウロを兵営の中に引き入れるように命じ、人々がなぜこのようにパウロに向かって叫ぶのかを知ろうとして、彼をむち打って取り調べるようにと言った。
25 And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?
彼らがむちを当てるためにパウロを縛ったとき、パウロはそばに立っている百人隊長に言った。「ローマ市民である者を、裁判にもかけずに、むち打ってよいのですか。」
26 When the centurion heard [that], he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest: for this man is a Roman.
これを聞いた百人隊長は、千人隊長のところに行って報告し、「どうなさいますか。あの人はローマ人です。」と言った。
27 Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.
千人隊長はパウロのところに来て、「あなたはローマ市民なのか、私に言ってくれ。」と言った。パウロは「そうです。」と言った。
28 And the chief captain answered, With a great sum obtained I this freedom. And Paul said, But I was [free] born.
すると、千人隊長は、「私はたくさんの金を出して、この市民権を買ったのだ。」と言った。そこでパウロは、「私は生まれながらの市民です。」と言った。
29 Then straightway they departed from him which should have examined him: and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.
このため、パウロを取り調べようとしていた者たちは、すぐにパウロから身を引いた。また千人隊長も、パウロがローマ市民だとわかると、彼を鎖につないでいたので、恐れた。
30 On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from [his] bands, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.
その翌日、千人隊長は、パウロがなぜユダヤ人に告訴されたのかを確かめたいと思って、パウロの鎖を解いてやり、祭司長たちと全議会の召集を命じ、パウロを連れて行って、彼らの前に立たせた。
