2 Peter 3
1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in [both] which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance:
愛する人たち。いま私がこの第二の手紙をあなたがたに書き送るのは、これらの手紙により、記憶を呼びさまさせて、あなたがたの純真な心を奮い立たせるためなのです。
2 That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:
それは、聖なる預言者たちによって前もって語られたみことばと、あなたがたの使徒たちが語った、主であり救い主である方の命令とを思い起こさせるためなのです。
3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
まず第一に、次のことを知っておきなさい。終わりの日に、あざける者どもがやって来てあざけり、自分たちの欲望に従って生活し、
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as [they were] from the beginning of the creation.
次のように言うでしょう。「キリストの来臨の約束はどこにあるのか。先祖たちが眠った時からこのかた、何事も創造の初めからのままではないか。」
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
こう言い張る彼らは、次のことを見落としています。すなわち、天は古い昔からあり、地は神のことばによって水から出て、水によって成ったのであって、
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
当時の世界は、その水により、洪水におおわれて滅びました。
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
しかし、今の天と地は、同じみことばによって、火に焼かれるためにとっておかれ、不敬虔な者どものさばきと滅びとの日まで、保たれているのです。
8 But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day [is] with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
しかし、愛する人たち。あなたがたは、この一事を見落としてはいけません。すなわち、主の御前では、一日は千年のようであり、千年は一日のようです。
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
主は、ある人たちがおそいと思っているように、その約束のことを遅らせておられるのではありません。かえって、あなたがたに対して忍耐深くあられるのであって、ひとりでも滅びることを望まず、すべての人が悔い改めに進むことを望んでおられるのです。
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
しかし、主の日は、盗人のようにやって来ます。その日には、天は大きな響きをたてて消えうせ、天の万象は焼けてくずれ去り、地と地のいろいろなわざは焼き尽くされます。
11 [Seeing] then [that] all these things shall be dissolved, what manner [of persons] ought ye to be in [all] holy conversation and godliness,
このように、これらのものはみな、くずれ落ちるものだとすれば、あなたがたは、どれほどきよい生き方をする敬虔な人でなければならないことでしょう。
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
そのようにして、神の日の来るのを待ち望み、その日の来るのを早めなければなりません。その日が来れば、そのために、天は燃えてくずれ、天の万象は焼け溶けてしまいます。
13 Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
しかし、私たちは、神の約束に従って、正義の住む新しい天と新しい地を待ち望んでいます。
14 Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless.
そういうわけで、愛する人たち。このようなことを待ち望んでいるあなたがたですから、しみも傷もない者として、平安をもって御前に出られるように、励みなさい。
15 And account [that] the longsuffering of our Lord [is] salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you;
また、私たちの主の忍耐は救いであると考えなさい。それは、私たちの愛する兄弟パウロも、その与えられた知恵に従って、あなたがたに書き送ったとおりです。
16 As also in all [his] epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as [they do] also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.
その中で、ほかのすべての手紙でもそうなのですが、このことについて語っています。その手紙の中には理解しにくいところもあります。無知な、心の定まらない人たちは、聖書の他の個所のばあいもそうするのですが、それらの手紙を曲解し、自分自身に滅びを招いています。
17 Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know [these things] before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.
愛する人たち。そういうわけですから、このことをあらかじめ知っておいて、よく気をつけ、無節操な者たちの迷いに誘い込まれて自分自身の堅実さを失うことにならないようにしなさい。
