Jeremiah 19

1 Thus says the Lord: “Go, and take a potter’s earthen bottle from the elders of the people and from the elders of the priests.

Ainsi a parlé Yahweh: Va, achète-toi une cruche de potier; prends avec toi des anciens du peuple et des anciens d’entre les prêtres.

2 And go out to the valley of the son of Hinnom, which is near the entrance to the earthen gate, and there you shall proclaim the words that I will speak to you.

Et sors vers la vallée de Ben-Hinnom, qui est à l'entrée de la porte de la Poterie, et là tu publieras les paroles que je te dirai.

3 And you shall say: Listen to the word of the Lord, O kings of Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will lead an affliction over this place, so much so that it will ring in the ears of all who hear about it.

Tu diras: Ecoutez la parole de Yahweh, rois de Juda et habitants de Jérusalem. Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, Dieu d'Israël: Voici que je vais amener sur ce lieu un malheur, tel que les oreilles tinteront à qui en entendra parler;

4 For they have abandoned me, and they have made this place foreign, and they have offered libations in it to foreign gods, whom neither they, nor their fathers, nor the kings of Judah have known. And they have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.

parce qu'ils m'ont abandonné, qu'ils ont aliéné ce lieu, qu'ils y ont offert de l'encens à des dieux étrangers que ne connaissaient ni eux, ni leurs pères ni les rois de Juda, et qu'ils ont rempli ce lieu du sang des innocents.

5 And they have built the exalted places of Baal, in order to burn their children with fire as a holocaust to Baal, something that I did not instruct or speak of, nor did it enter into my heart.

Ils ont bâti les hauts lieux de Baal, pour consumer leurs enfants par le feu en holocauste à Baal, choses que je n'avais ni commandées, ni dites, et qui n'étaient point montées à mon cœur.

6 Because of this, behold, the days are approaching, says the Lord, when this place will no longer be called Topheth, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.

C'est pourquoi voici que des jours viennent, — oracle de Yahweh, où ce lieu ne sera plus appelé Topheth ni vallée de Ben-Hinnom, mais vallée du massacre.

7 And I will scatter the counsel of Judah and of Jerusalem in this place. And I will overthrow them with the sword, in the sight of their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their lives. And I will give their carcasses to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the land as food.

Je rendrai vain dans ce lieu le conseil de Juda et de Jérusalem; je les ferai tomber par l'épée devant leurs ennemis et par la main de ceux qui en veulent à leur vie; et je donnerai leurs cadavres en pâture aux oiseaux du ciel et aux bêtes de la terre.

8 And I will set this city amid stupor and hissing. Everyone who passes by it will be stupefied, and they will hiss over all its wounds.

Et je ferai de cette ville un objet de stupeur et de risée; quiconque passera près d'elle sera stupéfait et rira de toutes ses meurtrissures.

9 And I will feed them with the flesh of their sons and with the flesh of their daughters. And each one of them will eat the flesh of his friend during the blockade and the embargo by which their enemies, and those who seek their lives, will enclose them.

Je leur ferai manger la chair de leurs fils et la chair de leurs filles; ils mangeront la chair les uns des autres, dans l'angoisse et la détresse où les réduiront leurs ennemis, et ceux qui en veulent à leur vie.

10 And you shall crush the bottle in the sight of the men who will go with you.

Tu briseras ensuite la cruche sous les yeux des hommes venus avec toi,

11 And you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord of hosts: In the same way, I will crush this people and this city, just as the potter’s vessel was crushed and cannot be made whole again. And they will be buried at Topheth, because there will be no other place for burial.

et tu leur diras: Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées: Je briserai ce peuple et cette ville, comme on brise le vase du potier, qui ne peut plus être réparé, et l'on enterrera à Topheth, faute de place pour enterrer.

12 So will I do to this place and to its inhabitants, says the Lord. And I will make this city to be like Topheth.

Voilà ce que je ferai à ce lieu, — oracle de Yahweh, — et à ses habitants, en rendant cette ville semblable à Topheth.

13 And the houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be unclean, just like the place of Topheth: all the houses on whose roofs they sacrificed to all the armies of heaven and poured out libations to strange gods.”

Les maisons de Jérusalem et les maisons des rois de Juda seront telles que ce lieu de Topheth, souillées: toutes les maisons sur les toits desquelles on a offert de l'encens à toute l'armée des cieux et versé des libations à des dieux étrangers.

14 Then Jeremiah arrived from Topheth, where the Lord had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the atrium of the house of the Lord, and he said to all the people:

Jérémie revint de Topheth où Yahweh l'avait envoyé prophétiser, et, se tenant dans le parvis de la maison de Yahweh, il dit à tout le peuple:

15 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will lead over this community, and over all its cities, all the evils that I have spoken against it. For they have hardened their necks, so that they would not heed my words.”

" Ainsi parle Yahweh des armées, le Dieu d'Israël: Voici que je vais faire venir sur cette ville et sur toutes les villes de son ressort tous les malheurs que j'ai annoncés contre elle, parce qu'ils ont raidi leur cou pour ne point obéir à mes paroles. "
