Jeremiah 18
1 The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying:
La parole qui fut adressée à Jérémie par Yahweh, en ces termes:
2 “Rise up and descend into the house of the potter, and there you will hear my words.”
" Lève-toi et descends à la maison du potier, et là je te ferai entendre ma parole. "
3 And I descended into the house of the potter, and behold, he was making a work on the wheel.
Je descendis à la maison du potier; et voici qu'il faisait son ouvrage sur les roues.
4 And the vessel, which he was making with his hands out of clay, broke. And turning away, he made another vessel, for it had been pleasing in his eyes to make it.
Et le vase qu’il faisait manqua, comme il arrive à l’argile dans la main du potier; et il refit un autre vase, comme il parut bon aux yeux du potier de le faire.
5 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
Et la parole de Yahweh me fut adressée en ces termes:
6 “Am I not able to do with you, O house of Israel, just as this potter has done, says the Lord? Behold, like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, O house of Israel.
Est-ce que je ne puis pas vous faire comme a fait ce potier, maison d'Israël; — oracle de Yahweh? Oui, comme l'argile est dans la main du potier, ainsi vous êtes dans ma main, maison d'Israël.
7 Suddenly, I will speak against a nation and against a kingdom, so that I may uproot, and destroy, and scatter it.
Tantôt je parle, touchant une nation et touchant un royaume, d'arracher, d'abattre et de détruire.
8 If that nation, against which I have spoken, will repent from their evil, I too will repent from the evil that I have decided I would do to them.
Mais cette nation, contre laquelle j'ai parlé, revient-elle de sa méchanceté, alors je me repens du mal que j'avais résolu de lui faire.
9 And soon, I will speak about a nation and about a kingdom, so that I may build and plant it.
Tantôt je parle, touchant une nation et touchant un royaume, de bâtir et de planter.
10 If it does evil in my sight, so as not to listen to my voice, I will repent of the good that I have said I would do to it.
Mais cette nation fait-elle ce qui est mal à mes yeux, en n'écoutant pas ma voix, alors je me repens du bien que j'avais dit que je lui ferais.
11 Now, therefore, speak to the men of Judah and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, saying: Thus says the Lord: Behold, I am forming an evil against you, and I am considering a plan against you. Let each one of you return from his evil way, and direct your ways and your intentions well.”
Et maintenant parle donc aux hommes de Juda, et aux habitants de Jérusalem, en ces termes: Ainsi parle Yahweh: Voici que je façonne contre vous un malheur, et que je médite un dessein contre vous. Revenez donc chacun de votre voie mauvaise, et réformez vos voies et vos œuvres.
12 And they said: “We have lost hope. And so we will follow our own thoughts, and each of us will act according to the depravity of his own evil heart.”
Mais ils disent: " C'est en vain! Nous suivrons nos pensées, nous agirons chacun selon l'obstination de notre mauvais cœur. "
13 For this reason, thus says the Lord: “Inquire among the Gentiles. Who has heard of such horrible things as the virgin of Israel has done to excess?
C'est pourquoi ainsi parle Yahweh: Interrogez les nations: Qui a jamais entendu pareille chose? Elle a commis d'horribles abominations, la vierge d'Israël!
14 Do the snows of Lebanon fail to fall on the rocks of the field? Or are the cold waters, which burst forth and flow down, able to be rooted out?
Quitte-t-elle le rocher de la plaine, la neige du Liban? Voit-on tarir les eaux qui viennent de loin, fraîches et courantes?
15 Yet my people have forgotten me, offering useless libations, and stumbling in their ways, in the paths of the world, so that they walk by these on an unmarked route.
Or mon peuple m'a oublié; il offre de l'encens au néant. Les idoles les font chanceler dans leurs voies, les chemins d'autrefois, pour suivre des sentiers, une route non frayée;
16 And so their land has been given over to desolation and to perpetual hissing. Each one who passes by will be astonished and will shake his head.
Pour faire de leur pays une désolation, un objet d'éternelle moquerie; tous ceux qui y passeront seront stupéfaits; et hocheront la tête.
17 Like a burning wind, I will disperse them in the sight the enemy. I will show them the back, and not the face, in the day of their perdition.”
Pareil au vent d'orient, je les disperserai devant l'ennemi; je leur montrerai le dos et non la face, au jour de leur désastre.
18 And they said: “Come, and let us devise a plan against Jeremiah. For the law will not perish from the priest, nor counsel from the wise, nor a sermon from the prophet. Come, and let us strike him with the tongue, and let us pay no attention to any of his words.”
Et ils ont dit: " Venez, formons un complot contre Jérémie; car la loi ne périra pas chez le prêtre, ni le conseil chez le sage, ni la parole de Dieu chez le prophète! Venez, frappons-le avec la langue, et ne prêtons pas l'oreille à tous ses discours. "
19 Attend to me, O Lord, and hear the voice of my adversaries.
Prête moi l'oreille, Yahweh, et entends la voix de mes adversaires!
20 Should evil be rendered for good? For they have dug a pit for my soul! Remember that I have stood in your sight, so as to speak on their behalf for good, and to avert your indignation from them.
Le mal sera-t-il rendu pour le bien, qu'ils creusent une fosse pour mon âme? souviens-toi comment je me suis tenu devant toi, pour te parler en leur faveur, pour détourner d'eux ta colère.
21 Because of this, give their sons over to famine, and bring them to the hand of the sword. Let their wives be widows without children. And let their husbands be slain by death. Let their youths be stabbed with the sword in battle.
C'est pourquoi, livre leurs enfants à la famine, et abandonne-les au tranchant du glaive! Que leurs femmes perdent leurs enfants et leurs époux; que leurs hommes meurent par la peste, et que leurs jeunes gens soient frappés par l'épée dans le combat!
22 Let an outcry be heard from their houses. For you will lead the robber upon them suddenly. For they have dug a pit, so that they may seize me, and they have hidden snares for my feet.
Qu'on entende leur cri sortir de leurs maisons, quand tu feras venir subitement sur eux des bandes armées! Car ils ont creusé une fosse pour me prendre, et ils ont caché des filets devant mes pieds.
23 But you, O Lord, know all their plans against me unto death. May you not forgive their iniquity, and do not allow their sin be taken away from your face. Let them be thrown down in your sight, in the time of your fury, so that you may destroy them.
Et toi, Yahweh, tu connais tous leurs complots pour me faire mourir. Ne pardonne pas leur iniquité, n'efface pas leur péché de devant toi; qu'ils s'affaissent devant toi; agis contre eux au temps de ta colère!
