1 Apollos Korint'teyken Pavlus, iç bölgelerden geçerek Efes'e geldi. Orada bazı öğrencileri bularak onlara, “İman ettiğiniz zaman Kutsal Ruh'u aldınız mı?” diye sordu. “Kutsal Ruh'un varlığından haberimiz yok ki!” dediler.
It happened that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper country, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples.
He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" They said to him, "No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
3 “Öyleyse neye dayanarak vaftiz oldunuz?” diye sordu. “Yahya'nın öğretisine dayanarak vaftiz olduk” dediler.
He said, "Into what then were you baptized?" They said, "Into John's baptism."
4 Pavlus, “Yahya'nın yaptığı vaftiz, tövbeyle ilgili bir vaftizdi” dedi. “Halka, kendisinden sonra gelecek Olan'a, yani İsa'ya inanmalarını söyledi.”
Paul said, "John indeed baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus."
5 Onlar bunu duyunca, Rab İsa'nın adıyla vaftiz oldular.
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
6 Pavlus ellerini onların üzerine koyunca Kutsal Ruh üzerlerine indi ve bilmedikleri dillerle konuşup peygamberlik etmeye başladılar.
When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they spoke with other tongues and prophesied.
7 Aşağı yukarı on iki kişiydiler.
They were about twelve men in all.
8 Havraya giren Pavlus cesaretle konuşmaya başladı. Üç ay boyunca oradakilerle tartışıp durdu, onları Tanrı'nın Egemenliği konusunda ikna etmeye çalıştı.
He entered into the synagogue, and spoke boldly for a period of three months, reasoning and persuading about the things concerning the kingdom of God.
9 Ne var ki, bazıları sert bir tutum takınıp ikna olmamakta direndiler ve İsa'nın yolunu halkın önünde kötülemeye başladılar. Bunun üzerine Pavlus onlardan ayrıldı. Öğrencilerini de alıp götürdü ve Tiranus'un dershanesinde her gün tartışmalarını sürdürdü.
But when some were hardened and disobedient, speaking evil of the Way before the crowd, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.
10 Bu durum iki yıl sürdü. Sonunda Yahudi olsun Grek olsun, Asya İli'nde yaşayan herkes Rab'bin sözünü işitti.
This continued for two years, so that all those who lived in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.
11 Tanrı, Pavlus'un eliyle olağanüstü mucizeler yaratıyordu.
God worked special miracles by the hands of Paul,
12 Şöyle ki, Pavlus'un bedenine değen peşkir ve peştamallar hasta olanlara götürüldüğünde, hastalıkları yok oluyor, kötü ruhlar içlerinden çıkıyordu.
so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were carried away from his body to the sick, and the evil spirits went out.
13 Çevrede dolaşıp kötü ruhları kovmakla uğraşan bazı Yahudiler de kötü ruhlara tutsak olanları Rab İsa'nın adını anarak kurtarmaya kalkıştılar. “Pavlus'un tanıttığı İsa'nın adıyla size emrediyoruz!” diyorlardı.
But some of the itinerant Jews, exorcists, took on themselves to invoke over those who had the evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, "I adjure you by Jesus whom Paul preaches."
14 Bunu yapanlar arasında Skeva adlı bir Yahudi başkâhinin yedi oğlu da vardı.
There were seven sons of one Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did this.
15 Kötü ruh ise onlara şöyle karşılık verdi: “İsa'yı biliyor, Pavlus'u da tanıyorum, ama siz kimsiniz?”
The evil spirit answered, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know, but who are you?"
16 İçinde kötü ruh bulunan adam onlara saldırdı, hepsini alt ederek bozguna uğrattı. Öyle ki, o evden çıplak ve yaralı olarak kaçtılar.
And the man in whom the evil spirit was, having leapt on them, having overpowered them all, prevailed against them so that they fled from that house naked and wounded.
17 Bu haber, Efes'te yaşayan bütün Yahudiler'le Grekler'e ulaştı. Hepsini bir korku aldı ve Rab İsa'nın adı büyük bir saygınlık kazandı.
This became known to all, both Jews and Greeks, who lived at Ephesus. Fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.
18 İman edenlerin birçoğu geliyor, yaptıkları kötülükleri itiraf edip anlatıyordu.
Many also of those who had believed came, confessing, and declaring their deeds.
19 Büyücülükle uğraşmış bir sürü kişi de kitaplarını toplayıp herkesin önünde yaktılar. Kitapların değerini hesapladıklarında toplam elli bin gümüş tuttuğunu gördüler.
Many of those who practiced magical arts brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. They counted the price of them, and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver.
20 Böylelikle Rab'bin sözü güçlü biçimde yayılıp etkinlik kazanıyordu.
So the word of the Lord was growing and becoming mighty.
21 Pavlus, bu olup bitenlerden sonra Makedonya ve Ahaya'dan geçip Yeruşalim'e gitmeye karar verdi. “Oraya gittikten sonra Roma'yı da görmem gerek” diyordu.
Now after these things had ended, Paul determined in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."
22 Yardımcılarından ikisini, Timoteos ile Erastus'u Makedonya'ya göndererek kendisi bir süre daha Asya İli'nde kaldı.
Having sent into Macedonia two of those who served him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself stayed in Asia for a while.
23 O sırada İsa'nın yoluna ilişkin büyük bir kargaşalık çıktı.
About that time there arose no small stir concerning the Way.
24 Artemis Tapınağı'nın gümüşten maketlerini yapan Dimitrios adlı bir kuyumcu, el sanatçılarına bir hayli iş sağlıyordu.
For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no little business to the craftsmen,
25 Sanatçıları ve benzer işlerle uğraşanları bir araya toplayarak onlara şöyle dedi: “Efendiler, bu işten büyük kazanç sağladığımızı biliyorsunuz.
whom he gathered together, with the workmen of like occupation, and said, "Sirs, you know that by this business we have our wealth.
26 Ama Pavlus denen bu adamın, elle yapılan tanrıların gerçek tanrılar olmadığını söyleyerek yalnız Efes'te değil, neredeyse bütün Asya İli'nde çok sayıda kişiyi kandırıp saptırdığını görüyor ve duyuyorsunuz.
You see and hear, that not at Ephesus alone, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are no gods, that are made with hands.
27 Hem bu sanatımız saygınlığını yitirmek tehlikesiyle karşı karşıyadır, hem de ulu tanrıça Artemis'in Tapınağı'nın hiçe sayılması ve bütün Asya İli'yle bütün dünyanın tapındığı tanrıçanın, ululuğundan yoksun kalması tehlikesi vardır.”
Not only is there danger that this our trade come into disrepute; but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be counted as nothing, and that she should even be deposed from her magnificence, whom all Asia and the world worships."
28 Oradakiler bunu duyunca öfkeyle doldular. “Efesliler'in Artemisi uludur!” diye bağırmaya başladılar.
When they heard this they were filled with anger, and began to shout, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians."
29 Kent büsbütün karıştı. Halk, Pavlus'un yol arkadaşlarından Makedonyalı Gayus ve Aristarhus'u yakalayıp sürükleyerek birlikte tiyatroya koşuştu.
The city was filled with confusion, and they rushed with one accord into the theater, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul's companions in travel.
30 Pavlus halkın arasına girmek istediyse de, öğrenciler onu bırakmadı.
When Paul wanted to enter in to the people, the disciples did not allow him.
31 Hatta, Pavlus'un dostu olan bazı Asya İli yöneticileri ona haber yollayarak tiyatroda görünmemesi için yalvardılar.
And also some of the Asiarchs, who were his friends, sent to him and urged him not to venture into the theater.
32 Tiyatrodaki topluluk karışıklık içindeydi. Her kafadan bir ses çıkıyordu. Çoğu ne için toplandığını bile bilmiyordu.
Some therefore shouted one thing, and some another, for the assembly was in confusion. Most of them did not know why they had come together.
33 Yahudiler İskender'i öne çıkarınca kalabalıktan bazıları olayı ona bağladı. Eliyle bir işaret yapan İskender, halka savunmasını yapmak istedi.
They brought Alexander out of the crowd, the Jews putting him forward. Alexander beckoned with his hand, and would have made a defense to the people.
34 Ama halk kendisinin Yahudi olduğunu anlayınca hep bir ağızdan yaklaşık iki saat boyunca, “Efesliler'in Artemisi uludur!” diye bağırıp durdu.
But when they perceived that he was a Jew, all with one voice for a time of about two hours shouted, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians."
35 Kalabalığı yatıştıran belediye yazmanı, “Ey Efesliler” dedi, “Efes Kenti'nin, ulu Artemis Tapınağı'nın ve gökten düşen kutsal taşın bekçisi olduğunu bilmeyen var mı?
When the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, "You men of Ephesus, is there anyone who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?
36 Bunları hiç kimse inkâr edemez. Bunun için sakin olmanız ve düşüncesiz bir şey yapmamanız gerekir.
Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rash.
37 Buraya getirdiğiniz bu adamlar, ne tapınakları yağma ettiler, ne de tanrıçamıza sövdüler.
For you have brought these men here, who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of our goddess.
38 Dimitrios ve sanatçı arkadaşlarının herhangi birinden şikâyeti varsa, mahkemeler açık, yargıçlar da var. Karşılıklı suçlamalarını orada yapsınlar.
If therefore Demetrius and the craftsmen who are with him have a matter against anyone, the courts are open, and there are proconsuls. Let them press charges against one another.
39 Soruşturacağınız başka bir durum varsa, bunun yasal bir toplantıda çözümlenmesi gerekir.
But if you seek anything further, it will be settled in the regular assembly.
40 Bugünkü olaylardan ötürü ayaklanma suçundan yargılanmak tehlikesindeyiz. Hiçbir gerekçesi olmayan bu kargaşanın hesabını veremeyeceğiz.”
For indeed we are in danger of being accused concerning this day's riot, there being no cause. Concerning it, we would not be able to give an account of this commotion."
41 Bunları söyledikten sonra topluluğu dağıttı.
When he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly.
