1 Ko au Pita, ko e ʻaposetolo ʻa Sisu Kalaisi, ki he kakai ʻāunofo kuo fakamovetevete ʻi Ponito, mo Kalētia, mo Kapatosia, mo ʻEsia, mo Pitinia,
Peter, an Apostle of Jesus Christ: To God's own people scattered over the earth, who are living as foreigners in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Roman Asia, and Bithynia,
2 Kuo fili ʻo fakatatau ki he muʻaki ʻilo ʻoe ʻOtua ko e Tamai, ʻi he fakamāʻoniʻoniʻi ʻoe Laumālie, ki he talangofua, pea ʻi he luluku ʻoe taʻataʻa ʻo Sisu Kalaisi: Ke tupulekina pe kiate kimoutolu ʻae ʻaloʻofa mo e monūʻia.
chosen in accordance with the foreknowledge of God the Father, through the sanctifying work of the Spirit, with a view to their obedience and to their being sprinkled with the blood of Jesus Christ. May more and more grace and peace be granted to you.
3 Fakafetaʻi ki he ʻOtua ko e Tamai ʻa hotau ʻEiki ko Sisu Kalaisi, ʻaia kuo ne fakatupu foʻou ʻakitautolu, ʻo fakatatau ki heʻene ʻaloʻofa lahi, ki he ʻamanaki moʻui ʻi he toetuʻu ʻa Sisu Kalaisi mei he pekia,
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who in His great mercy has begotten us anew to an ever-living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4 Ki ha tofiʻa taʻefaʻaʻauha, pea taʻeʻuli, ʻo taʻefaʻamae, ʻoku tauhiʻi ʻi he langi maʻatautolu,
to an inheritance imperishable, undefiled and unfading, which has been reserved in Heaven for you,
5 ʻAkitautolu ʻoku leʻohi ʻe he mālohi ʻoe ʻOtua ʻi he tui ki he fakamoʻui kuo teu ke fakahā ʻi he kuonga ki mui.
whom God in His power is guarding through faith for a salvation that even now stands ready for unveiling at the End of the Age.
6 ʻAia ʻoku mou fiefia lahi ai, ka ko eni ʻi he ʻaho siʻi pe, ʻi heʻene ʻaonga ke pehē, ʻoku mou māfasia ʻi he ngaahi ʻahiʻahi lahi:
Rejoice triumphantly in the prospect of this, even if now, for a short time, you are compelled to sorrow amid various trials.
7 Koeʻuhi ʻi he ʻahiʻahi ʻa hoʻomou tui, ʻaia ʻoku mahuʻinga lahi ʻi he koula ʻoku ʻauha, ka kuo ʻahiʻahi ia ʻaki ʻae afi, ke ʻilo ia [ʻoku iku ]ki he fakamālōʻia mo e ongoongolelei mo e nāunau ʻi he fakahā mai ʻo Sisu Kalaisi:
The sorrow comes in order that the testing of your faith--being more precious than that of gold, which perishes and yet is proved by fire--may be found to result in praise and glory and honour at the re-appearing of Jesus Christ.
8 ʻAia ʻoku teʻeki te mou mamata, ka ʻoku mou ʻofa ki ai; pea ʻoku ʻikai pe te mou mamata ki ai, ka ʻi hoʻomou tui, ʻoku mou fiefia ʻaki ʻae fiefia taʻefaʻaʻauha pea fungani lelei:
Him you love, though your eyes have never looked on Him. In Him, though at present you cannot see Him, you nevertheless trust, and triumph with a joy which is unspeakable and is crowned with glory,
9 ʻO maʻu ʻae ngataʻanga ʻo hoʻomou tui, ko e fakamoʻui ʻo homou laumālie.
while you are securing as the outcome of your faith the salvation of your souls.
10 ʻAe fakamoʻui ko ia naʻe ʻekea mo hakule lahi ki ai ʻae kau palōfita, ʻakinautolu naʻe kikite ki he ʻaloʻofa kiate kimoutolu:
There were Prophets who earnestly inquired about that salvation, and closely searched into it--even those who spoke beforehand of the grace which was to come to you.
11 ʻO nau kumi pe hoko fakakū, pe ko e hā ʻae anga ʻoe kuonga ko ia naʻe lea ki ai ʻae Laumālie ʻo Kalaisi, ʻaia naʻe nofoʻia ʻakinautolu, ʻi heʻene tomuʻa fakahā ʻae ngaahi mamahi ʻo Kalaisi, pea mo e lelei ʻe hoko ai.
They were eager to know the time which the Spirit of Christ within them kept indicating, or the characteristics of that time, when they solemnly made known beforehand the sufferings that were to come upon Christ and the glories which would follow.
12 ʻAkinautolu naʻe fakahā ki ai, naʻe ʻikai maʻanautolu, kae maʻatautolu naʻa nau tauhiʻi ʻae ngaahi meʻa, ʻaia kuo fakamatala eni kiate kimoutolu ʻekinautolu kuo malangaʻaki ʻae ongoongolelei kiate kimoutolu, ʻaki ʻae Laumālie Māʻoniʻoni naʻe fekau hifo mei he langi; ko e ngaahi meʻa ko ia ʻoku holi ke fakasio ki ai ʻae kau ʻāngelo.
To them it was revealed that they were serving not themselves but you, when they foretold the very things which have now been openly declared to you by those who, having been taught by the Holy Spirit which had been sent from Heaven, brought you the Good News. Angels long to stoop and look into these things.
13 Ko ia ke nonoʻo ʻae noʻotanga vala ʻa homou loto, pea leʻo, ʻo ʻamanaki lelei ʻo aʻu ki he ngataʻanga, ki he lelei ʻe ʻomi kiate kimoutolu ʻi he fakahā ʻo Sisu Kalaisi;
Therefore gird up your minds and fix your hopes calmly and unfalteringly upon the boon that is soon to be yours, at the re-appearing of Jesus Christ.
14 Ke mou ngali mo e fānau talangofua, ke ʻoua naʻa fakatatau ʻakimoutolu ki he ngaahi holi ʻi muʻa hoʻomou taʻeʻilo:
And, since you delight in obedience, do not shape your lives by the cravings which used to dominate you in the time of your ignorance,
15 Kae hangē ʻoku māʻoniʻoni ʻaia kuo ne uiuiʻi ʻakimoutolu, ke māʻoniʻoni foki ʻakimoutolu ʻi hoʻomou moʻui kotoa pē;
but--in imitation of the holy One who has called you--you also must be holy in all your habits of life.
16 He kuo tohi, [ʻo pehē], “Mou māʻoniʻoni he ʻoku ou māʻoniʻoni.”
Because it stands written, "You are to be holy, because I am holy."
17 Pea kapau ʻoku mou hū ki he Tamai, ʻaia ʻoku ne fakamaau ʻo taʻefilifilimānako ki he kakai, kae fakatatau ki he ngāue ʻae tangata taki taha, mou fai ke fakaʻosi ʻae ngaahi ʻaho ʻo hoʻomou ʻāunofo ʻi he manavahē:
And if you address as your Father Him who judges impartially in accordance with each man's actions, then spend in fear the time of your stay here on earth,
18 Koeʻuhi ʻoku mou ʻilo naʻe ʻikai ke huhuʻi ʻakimoutolu mei hoʻomou moʻui taʻeʻaonga, ʻi he talatupuʻa mei hoʻomou ngaahi tamai, ʻaki ʻae ngaahi meʻa ʻe ʻauha, ko e siliva mo e koula;
knowing, as you do, that it was not with a ransom of perishable wealth, such as silver or gold, that you were set free from your frivolous habits of life which had been handed down to you from your forefathers,
19 Ka ʻi he taʻataʻa maʻongoʻonga ʻo Kalaisi, ʻo hangē ha lami taʻehanoʻila, pea taʻehanomele:
but with the precious blood of Christ--as of an unblemished and spotless lamb.
20 ʻAia naʻe muʻaki tuʻutuʻuni moʻoni ʻi he teʻeki fakatupu ʻa māmani, ka naʻe fakahā ia ʻi he kuonga ki mui ni koeʻuhi ko kimoutolu,
He was pre-destined indeed to this work, even before the creation of the world, but has been plainly manifested in these last days for the sake of you who, through Him,
21 ʻAkimoutolu ʻoku tui ʻiate ia ki he ʻOtua, ʻaia naʻa ne fokotuʻu ia mei he pekia, mo ne hakeakiʻi ia; koeʻuhi ke ʻi he ʻOtua ʻa hoʻomou tui mo e ʻamanaki lelei.
are faithful to God, who raised Him from among the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are resting upon God.
22 Ko e meʻa ʻi hoʻomou fakamaʻa homou laumālie, ʻi he Laumālie, ʻi hoʻomou talangofua ki he moʻoni, ki he ʻofa taʻeloi ʻoe kāinga, ke mou feʻofaʻaki ʻaki ʻae loto maʻa mo fakamātoato:
Now that, through your obedience to the truth, you have purified your souls for cherishing sincere brotherly love, you must love another heartily and fervently.
23 He kuo mou fanauʻi foʻou, kae ʻikai ʻaki ʻae tenga ʻe ʻauha, ka ko ia ʻe taʻefaʻaʻauha, ko e folofola ʻae ʻOtua, ʻaia ʻoku moʻui pea tolonga ʻo taʻengata. (aiōn g165)
For you have been begotten again by God's ever-living and enduring word from a germ not of perishable, but of imperishable life. (aiōn g165)
24 “He ʻoku hangē ko e mohuku ʻae kakano kotoa pē, pea ko e nāunau kotoa pē ʻoe tangata ʻoku tatau mo e fisiʻi mohuku. ʻOku mae ʻae mohuku, pea ko hono fisi ʻoʻona ʻoku ngangana:
"All mankind resemble the herbage, and all their beauty is like its flowers. The herbage dries up, and its flowers drop off;
