4 Mosebok 22
1 Och Israels barn bröto upp och lägrade sig på Moabs hedar, på andra sidan Jordan mitt emot Jeriko.
And the children of Israel departed, and encamped on the west of Moab by Jordan toward Jericho.
2 Och Balak, Sippors son, såg allt vad Israel hade gjort mot amoréerna.
And when Balac son of Sepphor saw all that Israel did to the Amorite,
3 Och Moab bävade storligen för folket, därför att det var så talrikt; Moab gruvade sig för Israels barn.
then Moab feared the people exceedingly because they were many; and Moab was grieved before the face of the children of Israel.
4 Och Moab sade till de äldste i Midjan: "Nu kommer denna hop att äta upp allt som finnes här runt omkring oss, likasom oxen äter upp vad grönt som finnes på marken." Och Balak, Sippors son, var på den tiden konung i Moab.
And Moab said to the elders of Madiam, Now shall this assembly lick up all that are round about us, as a calf would lick up the green [herbs] of the field: —and Balac son of Sepphor was king of Moab at that time.
5 Och han skickade sändebud till Bileam, Beors son, i Petor vid floden, i hans stamfränders land, för att kalla honom till sig; han lät säga: "Se, här är ett folk som har dragit ut ur Egypten; se, det övertäcker marken, och det har lägrat sig mitt emot mig.
And he sent ambassadors to Balaam the son of Beor, to Phathura, which is on a river of the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, a people is come out of Egypt, and behold it has covered the face of the earth, and it has encamped close to me.
6 Så kom nu och förbanna åt mig detta folk, ty det är mig för mäktigt; kanhända skall jag då kunna slå det och förjaga det ur landet. Ty jag vet att den du välsignar, han är välsignad, och den du förbannar, han bliver förbannad."
And now come, curse me this people, for it is stronger than we; if we may be able to smite some of them, and I will cast them out of the land: for I know that whomsoever thou dost bless, they are blessed, and whomsoever thou dost curse, they are cursed.
7 Så gingo nu de äldste i Moab och de äldste i Midjan åstad och hade med sig spådomslön; och de kommo till Bileam och framförde till honom Balaks ord.
And the elders of Moab went, and the elders of Madiam, and their divining [instruments were] in their hands; and they came to Balaam, and spoke to him the words of Balac.
8 Och han sade till dem: "Stannen här över natten, så vill jag sedan giva eder svar efter vad HERREN talar till mig." Då stannade Moabs furstar kvar hos Bileam.
And he said to them, Tarry here the night, and I will answer you the things which the Lord shall say to me; and the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
9 Och Gud kom till Bileam; han sade: "Vad är det för män som du har hos dig?"
And God came to Balaam, and said to him, Who are these men with thee?
10 Bileam svarade Gud: "Balak, Sippors son, konungen i Moab, har sänt till mig detta bud:
And Balaam said to God, Balac son of Sepphor, king of Moab, sent them to me, saying,
11 'Se, här är det folk som har dragit ut ur Egypten, och det övertäcker marken. Så kom nu och förbanna det åt mig; kanhända skall jag då kunna giva mig i strid med det och förjaga det.'"
Behold, a people has come forth out of Egypt, and has covered the face of the land, and it has encamped near to me; and now come, curse it for me, if indeed I shall be able to smite it, and cast it out of the land.
12 Då sade Gud till Bileam: "Du skall icke gå med dem; du skall icke förbanna detta folk, ty det är välsignat."
And God said to Balaam, Thou shalt not go with them, neither shalt thou curse the people; for they are blessed.
13 Om morgonen, när Bileam hade stått upp, sade han alltså till Balaks furstar: "Gån hem till edert land, ty HERREN vill icke tillstädja mig att följa med eder."
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said to the princes of Balac, Depart quickly to your lord; God does not permit me to go with you.
14 Då stodo Moabs furstar upp och gingo hem till Balak och sade: "Bileam vägrade att följa med oss."
And the princes of Moab rose, and came to Balac, and said, Balaam will not come with us.
15 Men Balak sände ännu en gång åstad furstar, flera och förnämligare än de förra.
And Balac yet again sent more princes and more honourable than they.
16 Och de kommo till Bileam och sade till honom: "Så säger Balak Sippors son: 'Låt dig icke avhållas från att komma till mig;
And they came to Balaam, and they say to him, Thus says Balac the son of Sepphor: I beseech thee, delay not to come to me.
17 ty jag vill bevisa dig övermåttan stor ära, och allt vad du begär av mig skall jag göra. Kom nu och förbanna åt mig detta folk.'"
For I will greatly honour thee, and will do for thee whatsoever thou shalt say; come then, curse me this people.
18 Då svarade Bileam och sade till Balaks tjänare: "Om Balak än gåve mig så mycket silver och guld som hans hus rymmer, kunde jag dock icke överträda HERRENS min Guds befallning, så att jag gjorde något däremot, vare sig litet eller stort.
And Balaam answered and said to the princes of Balac, If Balac would give me his house full of silver and gold, I shall not be able to go beyond the word of the Lord God, to make it little or great in my mind.
19 Men stannen nu också I kvar har över natten, för att jag må förnimma vad HERREN ytterligare kan vilja tala till mig."
And now do ye also tarry here this night, and I shall know what the Lord will yet say to me.
20 Och Gud kom till Bileam om natten och sade till honom: "Om dessa män hava kommit för att kalla dig, så stå upp och följ med dem. Men allenast vad jag säger dig skall du göra."
And God came to Balaam by night, and said to him, If these men are come to call thee, rise and follow them; nevertheless the word which I shall speak to thee, it shalt thou do.
21 Om morgonen, när Bileam hade stått upp, sadlade han alltså sin åsninna och följde med Moabs furstar.
And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22 Men då han nu följde med, upptändes Guds vrede, och HERRENS ängel ställde sig på vägen för att hindra honom, där han red på sin åsninna, åtföljd av två sina tjänare.
And God was very angry because he went; and the angel of the Lord rose up to withstand him. Now he had mounted his ass, and his two servants were with him.
23 När då åsninnan såg HERRENS ängel stå på vägen med ett draget svärd i sin hand, vek hon av ifrån vägen och gick in på åkern; men Bileam slog åsninnan för att driva henne tillbaka in på vägen.
And when the ass saw the angel of God standing opposite in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand, then the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and [Balaam] smote the ass with his staff to direct her in the way.
24 Därefter ställde sig HERRENS ängel i en smal gata mellan vingårdarna, där murar funnos på båda sidor.
And the angel of the Lord stood in the avenues of the vines, a fence [being] on this side and a fence on that.
25 När nu åsninnan såg HERRENS ängel, trängde hon sig mot muren och klämde så Bileams ben mot muren; och han slog henne ännu en gång.
And when the ass saw the angel of God, she thrust herself against the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall, and he smote her again.
26 Då gick HERRENS ängel längre fram och ställde sig på ett trångt ställe, där ingen utväg fanns att vika undan, vare sig till höger eller till vänster.
And the angel of the Lord went farther, and came and stood in a narrow place where it was impossible to turn to the right or the left.
27 När åsninnan nu såg HERRENS ängel, lade hon sig ned under Bileam. Då upptändes Bileams vrede och han slog åsninnan med sin stav.
And when the ass saw the angel of God, she lay down under Balaam; and Balaam was angry, and struck the ass with his staff.
28 Men HERREN öppnade åsninnans mun, och hon sade till Bileam: "Vad har jag gjort dig, eftersom du nu tre gånger har slagit mig?"
And God opened the mouth of the ass, and she says to Balaam, What have I done to thee, that thou hast smitten me this third time?
29 Bileam svarade åsninnan: "Du har ju handlat skamligt mot mig; om jag hade haft ett svärd i min hand, skulle jag nu hava dräpt dig."
And Balaam said to the ass, Because thou hast mocked me; and if I [had] had a sword in my hand, I would now have killed thee.
30 Men åsninnan sade till Bileam: "Är icke jag din egen åsninna, som du har ridit på i all din tid intill denna dag? Och har jag någonsin förut plägat göra så mot dig? Han svarade: "Nej."
And the ass says to Balaam, [Am] not I thine ass on which thou hast ridden since thy youth till this day? did I ever do thus to thee, utterly disregarding [thee]? and he said, No.
31 Och HERREN öppnade Bileams ögon, så att han såg HERRENS ängel stå på vägen med ett draget svärd i sin hand. Då bugade han sig och föll ned på sitt ansikte.
And God opened the eyes of Balaam, and he sees the angel of the Lord withstanding [him] in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand, and he stooped down and worshipped on his face.
32 Och HERRENS ängel sade till honom: "Varför har du nu tre gånger slagit din åsninna? Se, jag har gått ut för att hindra dig, ty denna väg leder till fördärv och är mig emot.
And the angel of God said to him, Why hast thou smitten thine ass this third time? and, behold, I came out to withstand thee, for thy way was not seemly before me; and when the ass saw me, she turned away from me this third time.
33 Och åsninnan såg mig, och hon har nu tre gånger vikit undan for mig. Om hon icke hade vikit undan för mig, så skulle jag nu hava dräpt dig, men låtit henne leva."
And if she had not turned out of the way, surely now, I should have slain thee, and should have saved her alive.
34 Då sade Bileam till HERRENS ängel: "Jag har syndat, ty jag visste icke att du stod mig emot på vägen. Om nu min resa misshagar dig, så vill jag vända tillbaka."
And Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, I have sinned, for I did not know that thou wert standing opposite in the way to meet [me]; and now if it shall not be pleasing to thee [for me to go on], I will return.
35 Men HERRENS ängel svarade Bileam: "Följ med dessa män; men intet annat än vad jag säger dig skall du tala." Så följde då Bileam med Balaks furstar.
And the angel of the Lord said to Balaam, Go with the men: nevertheless the word which I shall speak to thee, that thou shalt take heed to speak. And Balaam went with the princes of Balac.
36 När Balak hörde att Bileam kom, gick han honom till mötes till Ir i Moab, vid gränsen där Arnon flyter, vid yttersta gränsen.
And when Balac heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him, to a city of Moab, which is on the borders of Arnon, which is on the [extreme] part of the borders.
37 Och Balak sade till Bileam: "Sände jag icke enträget bud till dig för att kalla dig hit? Varför ville du då icke begiva dig till mig? Skulle jag icke kunna bevisa dig tillräcklig ära?"
And Balac said to Balaam, Did I not send to thee to call thee? why hast thou not come to me? shall I not indeed be able to honour thee?
38 Bileam svarade Balak: "Du ser nu att jag har kommit till dig. Men det står ingalunda i min egen makt att tala något. Vad Gud lägger i min mun, det måste jag tala."
And Balaam said to Balac, Behold, I am now come to thee: shall I be able to say anything? the word which God shall put into my mouth, that I shall speak.
39 Sedan följde Bileam med Balak, och de kommo till Kirjat-Husot.
And Balaam went with Balac, and they came to the cities of streets.
40 Och Balak slaktade fäkreatur och småboskap och sände till Bileam och de furstar som voro med honom.
And Balac offered sheep and calves, and sent to Balaam and to his princes who were with him.
41 Och följande morgon tog Balak Bileam med sig och förde honom upp på Bamot-Baal; och han kunde från denna plats se en del av folket.
And it was morning; and Balac took Balaam, and brought him up to the pillar of Baal, and shewed him thence a part of the people.
