1 Timotheosbrevet 5

1 Den gamla skall du icke hårdeliga straffa; utan förmana såsom en fader; de unga såsom bröder;

Rebuke not an elder, but exhort him as a father; the younger men as brothers:

2 De gamla qvinnor såsom mödrar; de unga såsom systrar, med all kyskhet.

the elderly women as mothers; the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

3 Hedra enkorna, de der rätta enkor äro.

Honor widows who are truly widows.

4 Om någon enka hafver barn, eller barnabarn, sådana skola först lära väl regera sitt eget hus, och göra såsom föräldrarna dem gjort hafva; ty det är väl gjordt, och Gudi tacknämligit.

But if any widow has children, or grandchildren, let them first learn to show piety to their own house, and to give benefactions to their ancestors: for this is acceptable in the sight of God.

5 Men det är en rätt enka, som ensam är, den sitt hopp sätter till Gud, och blifver alltid i böner och åkallan, natt och dag;

She who is truly a widow, and left alone, hopes in God, and abides in prayers and supplication night and day;

6 Men den som lefver i vällust, hon är lefvandes död.

but she who is wanton is dead though living.

7 Sådant bjud, att de äro ostraffeliga.

Indeed command these things, in order that they may be blameless.

8 Hvar nu någor sina, besynnerliga sitt husfolk, icke försörjer, den hafver försakat trona, och är argare än en Hedninge.

But if any one provides not for his own, and especially those of his own house, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

9 Låt inga enko utväljas yngre än sextio år, den som hafver varit ens mans hustru;

Let a widow not be taken into account under three score years, the wife of one husband,

10 Och vittnesbörd hafver om goda gerningar; om hon hafver uppfödt barn; om hon hafver herbergat; om hon hafver tvagit de heligas fötter; om hon hafver hulpit de bedröfvada; om hon i alla goda gerningar hafver idkelig varit.

being witness in beautiful works; if she has brought up children, if she has entertained strangers, if she has washed the feet of saints, if she has succored those in tribulation, if she has followed in every good work.

11 Men de unga enkor låt fara; ty när de begynna kättjas emot Christum, så vilja de gifta sig;

But reject the younger widows: for when they may wax wanton against Christ, they wish to marry;

12 Och hafva sin dom, att de den första tron brutit hafva.

having condemnation, because they have rejected their first faith:

13 Dertillmed äro de fåfänga, och lära löpa omkring i husen; ja, icke allenast fåfänga, utan ock sqvallerfulla, och förvetna, och tala det som icke borde.

and at the same time they learn to be idle, going about houses; and not only idle, but also loquacious even busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

14 Så vill jag nu; att de unga enkor gifta sig, föda barn, stå hus före, intet tillfälle gifva motståndarenom till att tala illa.

Therefore I wish the younger women to marry, to raise up children, to rule the house, to give no occasion to the adversary for the sake of reproach;

15 Ty några hafva allaredo vändt tillbaka efter Satanam.

for already certain ones have turned away after Satan.

16 Hvar nu någor trogen man eller qvinna hafver enkor, han försörje dem, och låte icke församlingen förtungas, att det må dem tillräcka, som rätta enkor äro.

If any faithful woman has widows, let her support them, and let not the church be burdened; in order that she may give her attention to those who are truly widows.

17 De Prester, som väl förestå, skall man hålla vara dubbel heder värda; mest de, som arbeta i ordet och lärdomen.

Let the elders who stand before the people beautifully, be considered worthy of double remuneration, especially those laboring in the word and teaching.

18 Ty Skriften säger: Du skall icke binda munnen till på oxan som tröskar; och: En arbetare är sin lön värd.

For the scripture says, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn: and, The laborer is worthy of his hire.

19 Tillstäd ingen klagomål emot en Prest, utan med tu eller tre vittne.

Bring not an accusation against an elder, except before two or three witnesses.

20 De som synda, straffa för allom, att andre skola ock frukta.

Convict those who sin before all, in order that the rest may also have fear.

21 Jag betygar för Gudi, och Herranom Jesu Christo, och för de utkorada Änglar, att du håller detta, utan egen godtycko, och gör intet efter väld.

I testify before God, and Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that you must guard these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.

22 Lägg icke hastigt händerna på någon, och gör dig icke heller delaktig i annars mans synder; håll dig sjelfvan kysk.

Lay hands quickly on no one, and be not partaker of other men's sins.

23 Drick icke länger vatten, utan bruka något fögo vin, för din magas skull, och att du ofta sjuk äst.

Keep yourself pure. No longer drink water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and on account of your frequent sickness.

24 Somliga menniskors synder äro uppenbara, att man dem tillförene döma kan; men somliga varda sedan uppenbara.

The sins of some men are manifest beforehand, going before to judgment; and some men they also follow after:

25 Sammalunda äro ock somliga goda gerningar uppenbara; och de andra blifva ock intet fördolda.

likewise truly are good works manifested beforehand; and those which are otherwise are not able to be hidden.
