San Mateo 8
1 Y como descendió Jesús del monte, seguíanle grandes multitudes.
When Jesus had come down from the hill, great crowds followed him.
2 Y, he aquí, un leproso vino, y le adoró, diciendo: Señor, si quisieres, puedes limpiarme.
He saw a leper who came up, and bowed to the ground before him, and said, ‘Master, if only you are willing, you are able to make me clean.’
3 Y extendiendo Jesús su mano, le tocó, diciendo: Quiero: sé limpio. Y luego su lepra fue limpiada.
Stretching out his hand, Jesus touched him, saying as he did so, ‘I am willing; become clean.’ Instantly he was made clean from his leprosy;
4 Entonces Jesús le dijo: Mira, no lo digas a nadie; mas vé, muéstrate al sacerdote, y ofrece el presente que mandó Moisés, para que les conste.
and then Jesus said to him, ‘Be careful not to say a word to anyone, but go and show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift directed by Moses, as evidence of your cure.’
5 Y entrando Jesús en Capernaum, vino a él un centurión, rogándole,
After Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion in the Roman army came up to him, entreating his help.
6 Y diciendo: Señor, mi criado está echado en casa paralítico, gravemente atormentado.
‘Sir,’ he said, ‘my manservant is lying ill at my house with a stroke of paralysis, and is suffering terribly.’
7 Y Jesús le dijo: Yo vendré, y le sanaré.
‘I will come and cure him,’ answered Jesus.
8 Y respondió el centurión, y dijo: Señor, no soy digno que entres debajo de mi techumbre; mas solamente di con la palabra, y mi criado sanará.
‘Sir,’ the centurion went on, ‘I am unworthy to receive you under my roof; but only speak, and my manservant will be cured.
9 Porque también yo soy hombre debajo de potestad; y tengo debajo de mi potestad soldados; y digo a éste: Vé, y va; y al otro: Ven, y viene; y a mi siervo: Haz esto, y lo hace.
For I myself am a man under the orders of others, with soldiers under me; and, if I say to one of them “Go,” he goes, and to another “Come,” he comes, and to my slave “Do this,” he does it.’
10 Y oyéndo lo Jesús, se maravilló; y dijo a los que le seguían: De cierto os digo, que ni aun en Israel he hallado tanta fe.
Jesus was surprised to hear this, and said to those who were following him, ‘Never I tell you, in any Israelite have I met with such faith as this!
11 Y yo os digo, que vendrán muchos del oriente, y del occidente, y se asentarán con Abraham, e Isaac, y Jacob, en el reino de los cielos;
Yes, and many will come in from East and West and take their places beside Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven;
12 Mas los hijos del reino serán echados en las tinieblas de afuera: allí será el llanto, y el crujir de dientes.
while the heirs to the kingdom will be banished into the darkness outside; there, there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.’
13 Entonces Jesús dijo al centurión: Vé, y como creíste, así sea hecho contigo. Y su criado fue sano en el mismo momento.
Then Jesus said to the centurion, ‘Go now, and it will be according to your faith.’ And the man was cured that very hour.
14 Y vino Jesús a casa de Pedro, y vio a su suegra echada en la cama, y con fiebre.
When Jesus went into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law prostrated with fever.
15 Y tocó su mano, y la fiebre la dejó; y ella se levantó, y les servía.
On his taking her hand, the fever left her, and she rose and began to take care of him.
16 Y como fue ya tarde, trajeron a él muchos endemoniados, y echó de ellos los demonios con su palabra, y sanó todos los enfermos;
In the evening the people brought to Jesus many who were possessed by demons; and he drove out the spirits with a word, and cured all who were ill,
17 Para que se cumpliese lo que fue dicho por el profeta Isaías, que dijo: El tomó nuestras enfermedades, y llevó nuestras dolencias.
in fulfilment of these words in the prophet Isaiah – “He took our infirmities on himself, and bore the burden of our diseases.”
18 Y viendo Jesús grandes multitudes al rededor de sí, mandó que se fuesen a la otra parte del lago.
Seeing a crowd round him, Jesus gave orders to go across.
19 Y llegóse un escriba, y díjole: Maestro, seguirte he donde quiera que fueres.
A teacher of the Law came up to him, and said, ‘Teacher, I will follow you wherever you go.’
20 Y Jesús le dijo: Las zorras tienen cavernas, y las aves del cielo nidos; mas el Hijo del hombre no tiene donde recostar su cabeza.
‘Foxes have holes,’ answered Jesus, ‘and wild birds their nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.’
21 Y otro de sus discípulos le dijo: Señor, dáme licencia que vaya primero, y entierre a mi padre.
‘Master,’ said another, who was a disciple, ‘let me first go and bury my father.’
22 Y Jesús le dijo: Sígueme, y deja que los muertos entierren a sus muertos.
But Jesus answered, ‘Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their dead.’
23 Y entrando él en una nave, sus discípulos le siguieron.
Then he got into the boat, followed by his disciples.
24 Y, he aquí, fue hecho en la mar un gran movimiento, de manera que la nave se cubría de las ondas; y él dormía.
Suddenly so great a storm came up on the sea, that the waves broke right over the boat. But Jesus was asleep;
25 Y llegándose sus discípulos le despertaron, diciendo: Señor, sálvanos, perecemos.
and the disciples came and roused him. ‘Master,’ they cried, ‘save us; we are lost!’
26 Y él les dice: ¿Por qué teméis, hombres de poca fe? Entonces levantado reprendió a los vientos y a la mar; y fue grande bonanza.
‘Why are you so timid?’ he said. ‘You of little faith!’ Then Jesus rose and rebuked the winds and the sea, and a great calm followed.
27 Y los hombres se maravillaron, diciendo: ¿Qué hombre es éste, que aun los vientos y la mar le obedecen?
The men were amazed, and exclaimed, ‘What kind of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him!’
28 Y como él llegó a la otra parte en el territorio de los Gergesenos; le vinieron al encuentro dos endemoniados que salían de los sepulcros, fieros en gran manera, así que nadie podía pasar por aquel camino.
On getting to the other side – the region of the Gadarenes – Jesus met two men who were possessed by demons, coming out of the tombs. They were so violent that no one was able to pass that way.
29 Y, he aquí, clamaron, diciendo: ¿Qué tenemos contigo, Jesús, Hijo de Dios? ¿Has venido ya acá a molestarnos antes de tiempo?
Suddenly they shrieked out, ‘What do you want with us, Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before our time?’
30 Y estaba lejos de ellos un hato de muchos puercos paciendo.
A long way off, there was a herd of many pigs, feeding;
31 Y los demonios le rogaron, diciendo: Si nos echas, permítenos que vayamos en aquel hato de puercos.
and the foul spirits began begging Jesus, ‘If you drive us out, send us into the herd of pigs.’
32 Y él les dijo: Id. Y ellos salidos, se fueron al hato de los puercos; y, he aquí, todo el hato de los puercos se precipitó de un despeñadero en la mar; y murieron en las aguas.
‘Go,’ he said. The spirits came out, and entered the pigs; and the whole herd rushed down the steep slope into the sea, and died in the water.
33 Y los porqueros huyeron, y viniendo a la ciudad, contaron todas las cosas, y lo que había pasado con los endemoniados.
At this the men who tended them ran away and went to the town, carrying the news of all that had occurred, and of what had happened to the possessed men.
34 Y, he aquí, toda la ciudad salió a encontrar a Jesús; y cuando le vieron, le rogaban que se fuese de sus términos.
At the news the whole town went out to meet Jesus, and, when they saw him, they entreated him to go away from their region.
