1 Y los varones de Israel habían jurado en Maspa, diciendo: Ninguno de nosotros dará su hija a los de Ben-jamín por mujer.
Now the men of Israel had sworn in Mizpah, saying: 'There shall not any of us give his daughter unto Benjamin to wife.'
2 Y vino el pueblo a la casa de Dios, y estuviéronse allí hasta la tarde delante de Dios: y alzando su voz hicieron gran llanto, y dijeron:
And the people came to Beth-el, and sat there till even before God, and lifted up their voices, and wept sore.
3 Oh Jehová Dios de Israel, ¿por qué ha sido esto en Israel, que falte hoy de Israel una tribu?
And they said: 'O LORD, the God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to-day one tribe lacking in Israel?'
4 Y el día siguiente el pueblo se levantó de mañana, y edificaron allí altar, y ofrecieron holocausto y pacíficos.
And it came to pass on the morrow that the people rose early, and built there an altar, and offered burnt-offerings and peace-offerings.
5 Y dijeron los hijos de Israel: ¿Quién de todas las tribus de Israel no subió a la congregación de Jehová? Porque se había hecho gran juramento contra el que no subiese a Jehová en Maspa, diciendo: Morirá de muerte.
And the children of Israel said: 'Who is there among all the tribes of Israel that came not up in the assembly unto the LORD?' For they had made a great oath concerning him that came not up unto the LORD to Mizpah, saying: 'He shall surely be put to death.'
6 Y los hijos de Israel se arrepintieron a causa de Ben-jamín su hermano, y dijeron: Una tribu es hoy cortada de Israel.
And the children of Israel repented them for Benjamin their brother, and said: 'There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day.
7 ¿Qué haremos para que los que han quedado puedan tomar mujeres? Nosotros hemos jurado por Jehová que no les hemos de dar nuestras hijas por mujeres.
How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing we have sworn by the LORD that we will not give them of our daughters to wives?'
8 Y dijeron: ¿Hay alguno de las tribus de Israel que no haya subido a Jehová a Maspa? Y hallaron que ninguno de Jabes-galaad había venido al campo a la congregación.
And they said: 'What one is there of the tribes of Israel that came not up unto the LORD to Mizpah?' And, behold, there came none to the camp from Jabesh-gilead to the assembly.
9 Porque el pueblo fue contado, y no hubo allí varón de los moradores de Jabes-galaad.
For when the people were numbered, behold, there were none of the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead there.
10 Entonces la congregación envió allá doce mil hombres de los más valientes, y mandáronles, diciendo: Id, y ponéd a cuchillo a los moradores de Jabes-galaad, y las mujeres y la familia.
And the congregation sent thither twelve thousand men of the valiantest, and commanded them, saying: 'Go and smite the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead with the edge of the sword, with the women and the little ones.
11 Mas haréis de esta manera, a todo hombre varón, y a toda mujer que hubiere conocido ayuntamiento de varón, mataréis.
And this is the thing that ye shall do: ye shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman that hath lain by man.'
12 Y hallaron de los moradores de Jabes-galaad cuatrocientas doncellas que no habían conocido varón en ayuntamiento de varón, las cuales trajeron al campo en Silo, que es en la tierra de Canaán.
And they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh-gilead four hundred young virgins, that had not known man by lying with him; and they brought them unto the camp to Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan.
13 Y toda la congregación enviaron a hablar a los hijos de Ben-jamín que estaban en la peña de Remmón, y llamáronlos en paz.
And the whole congregation sent and spoke to the children of Benjamin that were in the rock of Rimmon, and proclaimed peace unto them.
14 Entonces volvieron los de Ben-jamín, y diéronles por mujeres las que habían guardado vidas de las mujeres de Jabes-galaad: mas no les bastaron estas.
And Benjamin returned at that time; and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh-gilead; and yet so they sufficed them not.
15 Y el pueblo se arrepintieron a causa de Ben-jamín, de que Jehová hubiese hecho mella en las tribus de Israel.
And the people repented them for Benjamin, because that the LORD had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
16 Y los ancianos de la congregación dijeron: ¿Qué haremos para que los que han quedado puedan tomar mujeres? Porque el sexo de las mujeres había sido raído de Ben-jamín.
Then the elders of the congregation said: 'How shall we do for wives for them that remain, seeing the women are destroyed out of Benjamin?'
17 Y dijeron: Haya Ben-jamín heredad de escapada, y no sea raída una tribu de Israel.
And they said: 'They that are escaped must be as an inheritance for Benjamin, that a tribe be not blotted out from Israel.
18 Nosotros no les podremos dar mujeres de nuestras hijas: porque los hijos de Israel habían jurado, diciendo: Maldito sea el que diere mujer a alguno de Ben-jamín.
Howbeit we may not give them wives of our daughters.' For the children of Israel had sworn, saying: 'Cursed be he that giveth a wife to Benjamin.'
19 Y dijeron: He aquí que cada un año hay solemnidad de Jehová en Silo a la parte que está al aquilón a Bet-el: y al nacimiento del sol al camino que sube de Bet-el a Siquem; y al mediodía a Lebona.
And they said: 'Behold, there is the feast of the LORD from year to year in Shiloh, which is on the north of Beth-el, on the east side of the highway that goeth up from Beth-el to Shechem, and on the south of Lebonah.'
20 Y mandaron a los hijos de Ben-jamín, diciendo: Id, y ponéd emboscada en las viñas.
And they commanded the children of Benjamin, saying: 'Go and lie in wait in the vineyards;
21 Y estád atentos; y cuando viereis salir a las hijas de Silo a bailar en corros, vosotros saldréis de las viñas, y arrebataros heis cada uno mujer para sí de las hijas de Silo: y os iréis a tierra de Ben-jamín.
and see, and, behold, if the daughters of Shiloh come out to dance in the dances, then come ye out of the vineyards, and catch you every man his wife of the daughters of Shiloh, and go to the land of Benjamin.
22 Y cuando vinieren los padres de ellas, o sus hermanos a demandárnoslo, nosotros les diremos: Tenéd piedad de nosotros en lugar de ellos: pues que nosotros en la guerra no tomamos mujeres para todos: y pues que vosotros no se las habéis dado para que ahora seáis culpados.
And it shall be, when their fathers or their brethren come to strive with us, that we will say unto them: Grant them graciously unto us; because we took not for each man of them his wife in battle; neither did ye give them unto them, that ye should now be guilty.'
23 Y los hijos de Ben-jamín lo hicieron así, que tomaron mujeres conforme a su número, robando de las que danzaban: y yéndose, tornáronse a su heredad, y reedificando las ciudades, habitaron en ellas.
And the children of Benjamin did so, and took them wives, according to their number, of them that danced, whom they carried off; and they went and returned unto their inheritance, and built the cities, and dwelt in them.
24 Entonces los hijos de Israel se fueron también de allí cada uno a su tribu, y a su familia, saliendo de allí cada cual a su heredad.
And the children of Israel departed thence at that time, every man to his tribe and to his family, and they went out from thence every man to his inheritance.
25 En estos días no había rey en Israel, cada uno hacía lo que le parecía recto delante de sus ojos.
In those days there was no king in Israel; every man did that which was right in his own eyes.
