Esdras 4

1 Y oyendo los enemigos de Judá y de Ben-jamín que los hijos de la cautividad edificaban el templo de Jehová Dios de Israel;

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the children of the captivity were building a temple unto the LORD, the God of Israel;

2 Llegáronse a Zorobabel, y a las cabezas de los padres, y dijéronles: Edificaremos con vosotros; porque como vosotros buscaremos a vuestro Dios, y a él sacrificamos desde los días de Asoraddán rey de Asiria que nos hizo subir aquí.

then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of fathers' houses, and said unto them: 'Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as ye do; and we do sacrifice unto Him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up hither.'

3 Y díjoles Zorobabel, y Jesuá, y los demás cabezas de los padres de Israel: No nos conviene edificar con vosotros casa a nuestro Dios: mas nosotros solos edificaremos a Jehová Dios de Israel, como nos mandó el rey Ciro rey de Persia.

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of fathers' houses of Israel, said unto them: 'Ye have nothing to do with us to build a house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD, the God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us.'

4 Mas el pueblo de la tierra debilitaba las manos del pueblo de Judá, y los perturbaba de edificar.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and harried them while they were building,

5 Y alquilaron contra ellos consejeros para disipar su consejo todo el tiempo de Ciro rey de Persia, y hasta el reino de Darío rey de Persia.

and hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia.

6 Y en el reino de Asuero, en el principio de su reino, escribieron acusación contra los moradores de Judá y de Jerusalem.

And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 Y en los días de Artaxerxes escribió en paz Mitridates, Tabeel, y los demás sus compañeros, a Artaxerxes rey de Persia: y la escritura de la carta era escrita en Siriaco, y declarada en Siriaco.

And in the days of Artaxerxes wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, unto Artaxerxes king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in the Aramaic character, and set forth in the Aramaic tongue.

8 Rehum canciller, y Samsai escriba escribieron una carta contra Jerusalem al rey Artaxerxes como se sigue:

Rehum the commander and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artaxerxes the king in this sort —

9 Entonces Rehum canciller, y Samsai escriba, y los demás sus compañeros, los Dineos, y los Afarsataqueos, Tefarleos, Afarseos, Ercueos, Babilonios, Susanceos, Dieveos, y Elamitas,

then wrote Rehum the commander, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions; the Dinites, and the Apharesattechites, the Tarpelites, the Apharesites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehites, the Elamites,

10 Y los demás pueblos que traspasó Asnafar el grande y glorioso, y los hizo habitar en las ciudades de Samaria, y los demás de la otra parte del río, y Cheenet.

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asenappar brought over, and set in the city of Samaria, and the rest that are in the country beyond the River: — 'And now —

11 Este es el traslado de la carta que enviaron al rey Artaxerxes: Tus siervos de la otra parte del río, y Cheenet.

this is the copy of the letter that they sent unto him, even unto Artaxerxes the king — thy servants the men beyond the River — and now

12 Sea notorio al rey que los Judíos que subieron de ti a nosotros, vinieron a Jerusalem, y edifican la ciudad rebelde y mala, y han acimentado los muros, y puesto los fundamentos.

be it known unto the king, that the Jews that came up from thee are come to us unto Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and the bad city, and have finished the walls, and are digging out the foundations.

13 Ahora notorio sea al rey, que si aquella ciudad fuere edificada, y los muros fueren fundados, el tributo, pecho, y rentas no darán: y el tributo de los reyes será menoscabado.

Be it known now unto the king, that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, impost, or toll, and so thou wilt endamage the revenue of the kings.

14 Ahora por la sal de palacio de que estamos salados, no nos es justo ver el menosprecio del rey: por tanto enviamos, e hicimos notorio al rey,

Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not meet for us to see the king's dishonour, therefore have we sent and announced to the king,

15 Para que busque en el libro de las historias de nuestros padres, y hallarás en el libro de las historias, y sabrás que esta ciudad es ciudad rebelde, y perjudicial a los reyes y a las provincias: y que hacen rebelión en medio de ella de tiempo antiguo, y que por esto esta ciudad fue destruida.

that search may be made in the book of the records of thy fathers; so shalt thou find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful unto kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.

16 Hacemos notorio al rey, que si esta ciudad fuere edificada, y los muros fundados, la parte de allá del río no será tuya.

We announce to the king that, if this city be builded, and the walls finished, by this means thou shalt have no portion beyond the River.'

17 El rey envió respuesta: A Rehum canciller, y a Samsai escriba, y a los demás sus compañeros que habitan en Samaria, y a los demás de la parte de allá del río: Paz, y a Cheenet.

Then sent the king an answer unto Rehum the commander, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions that dwell in Samaria, and unto the rest beyond the River: 'Peace, and now

18 La carta que nos enviasteis claramente fue leída delante de mí:

the letter which ye sent unto us hath been plainly read before me.

19 Y por mí fue dado mandamiento, y buscaron, y hallaron que aquella ciudad de tiempo antiguo se levanta contra los reyes, y se rebela, y rebelión se hace en ella:

And I decreed, and search hath been made, and it is found that this city of old time hath made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made therein.

20 Y que reyes fuertes hubo en Jerusalem, y señores en todo lo que está de la otra parte del río; y que tributo, y pecho, y rentas se les daba.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, impost, and toll, was paid unto them.

21 Ahora dad mandamiento que cesen aquellos varones: y aquella ciudad no sea edificada, hasta que por mí sea dado mandamiento.

Make ye now a decree to cause these men to cease, and that this city be not builded, until a decree shall be made by me.

22 Y mirád bien que no hagáis error en esto: ¿por qué crecerá el daño para perjuicio de los reyes?

And take heed that ye be not slack herein; why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?'

23 Entonces, cuando el traslado de la carta del rey Artaxerxes fue leído delante de Rehum, y de Samsai escriba, y sus compañeros, fueron prestamente a Jerusalem a los Judíos, e hiciéronles cesar con brazo y fuerza.

Then when the copy of king Artaxerxes' letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem unto the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Entonces cesó la obra de la casa de Dios, la cual estaba en Jerusalem: y cesó hasta el año segundo del reino de Darío rey de Persia.

Then ceased the work of the house of God which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased unto the second year of the reign of Darius king of Persia.
