2 Samuel 18
1 David, pues, contó el pueblo que tenía consigo, y puso sobre ellos tribunos y centuriones.
And David numbered the people that were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
2 Y puso la tercera parte del pueblo debajo de la mano de Joab, y otra tercera debajo de la mano de Abisaí, hijo de Sarvia, hermano de Joab, y la otra tercera parte debajo de la mano de Etai Geteo. Y dijo el rey al pueblo: Yo también saldré con vosotros.
And David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. And the king said unto the people, I will surely go forth with you myself also.
3 Mas el pueblo dijo: No saldrás, porque si nosotros huyéremos, no harán caso de nosotros: y aunque la mitad de nosotros muera, no harán caso de nosotros: mas tú ahora vales tanto como diez mil de nosotros, por tanto mejor será que tú nos des ayuda desde la ciudad.
But the people said, Thou shalt not go forth: for if we flee away, they will not care for us; neither if half of us die, will they care for us: but thou art worth ten thousand of us: therefore now it is better that thou be ready to succour us out of the city.
4 Entonces el rey les dijo: Yo haré lo que a vosotros pareciere bien. Y el rey se puso a la entrada de la puerta, mientras salía todo el pueblo de ciento en ciento, y de mil en mil.
And the king said unto them, What seemeth you best I will do. And the king stood by the gate side, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 Y el rey mandó a Joab, y a Abisaí, y a Etai, diciendo: Tratád benignamente por amor de mí al mozo Absalom. Y todo el pueblo oyó cuando el rey mandó acerca de Absalom a todos los capitanes.
And the king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom. And all the people heard when the king gave all the captains charge concerning Absalom.
6 Y el pueblo salió al campo contra Israel, y la batalla se dio en el bosque de Efraím.
So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.
7 Y el pueblo de Israel cayó allí delante de los siervos de David, y fue hecha allí gran matanza en aquel día de veinte mil hombres.
And the people of Israel were smitten there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.
8 Y derramándose allí el ejército por la haz de toda la tierra, fueron más los que consumió el bosque de los del pueblo, que los que consumió la espada aquel día.
For the battle was there spread over the face of all the country: and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9 Y Absalom se encontró con los siervos de David, y Absalom iba sobre un mulo, y el mulo se entró debajo de un espeso y grande alcornoque, y asiósele la cabeza al alcornoque, y quedó entre el cielo y la tierra, y el mulo que estaba debajo de él, pasó adelante.
And Absalom chanced to meet the servants of David. And Absalom rode upon his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was taken up between the heaven and the earth; and the mule that was under him went on.
10 Y viéndole uno, avisó a Joab, diciendo: He aquí que yo ví a Absalom colgado de un alcornoque.
And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, Behold, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak.
11 Y Joab respondió al hombre que le daba la nueva: ¿Y viéndole tú? ¿por qué no le heriste luego allí a tierra? y sobre mí, que yo te diera diez siclos de plata, y un talabarte.
And Joab said unto the man that told him, And behold, thou sawest it, and why didst thou not smite him there to the ground? and I would have given thee ten [pieces of] silver, and a girdle.
12 Y el hombre dijo a Joab: Aunque yo me pesara en mis manos mil siclos de plata, no extendiera mi mano en el hijo del rey: porque nosotros lo oímos cuando el rey te mandó a ti, y a Abisaí, y a Etai, diciendo: Mirád que ninguno toque en el mozo Absalom:
And the man said unto Joab, Though I should receive a thousand [pieces of] silver in mine hand, yet would I not put forth mine hand against the king’s son: for in our hearing the king charged thee and Abishai and Ittai, saying, Beware that none touch the young man Absalom.
13 O yo hubiera hecho traición contra mi alma; pues que al rey nada se le esconde, y tú mismo estarías contra mí.
Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life, (and there is no matter hid from the king, ) then thou thyself wouldest have stood aloof.
14 Y Joab respondió: No es razón, que yo te ruegue. Y tomando tres dardos en su mano, hincólos en el corazón de Absalom, que aun estaba vivo en medio del alcornoque.
Then said Joab, I may not tarry thus with thee. And he took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
15 Y cercándole diez mancebos escuderos de Joab, hirieron a Absalom, y matáronle.
And ten young men that bare Joab’s armour compassed about and smote Absalom, and slew him.
16 Entonces Joab tocó la corneta, y el pueblo se volvió de seguir a Israel, porque Joab detuvo al pueblo.
And Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel: for Joab held back the people.
17 Y tomando a Absalom, echáronle en un gran foso en el bosque, y levantaron sobre él un muy gran majano de piedras, y todo Israel huyó cada uno a sus estancias.
And they took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones: and all Israel fled every one to his tent.
18 Y Absalom había tomado, y se había levantado una columna en su vida, la cual está en el valle del rey, porque había dicho entre sí: Yo no tengo hijo que conserve la memoria de mi nombre: y llamó a aquella columna por su nombre, y así se llamó, lugar de Absalom, hasta hoy.
Now Absalom in his life time had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the king’s dale: for he said, I have no son to keep my name in remembrance: and he called the pillar after his own name: and it is called Absalom’s monument, unto this day.
19 Entonces Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc, dijo: Yo correré ahora y daré las nuevas al rey, como Jehová ha defendido su causa de la mano de sus enemigos.
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok, Let me now run, and bear the king tidings, how that the LORD hath avenged him of his enemies.
20 Y respondióle Joab: Hoy no llevarás las nuevas, otro día las llevarás: no darás hoy la nueva, porque el hijo del rey es muerto.
And Joab said unto him, Thou shalt not be the bearer of tidings this day, but thou shalt bear tidings another day: but this day thou shalt bear no tidings, because the king’s son is dead.
21 Y Joab dijo a Cusi: Vé tú, y di al rey lo que has visto. Y Cusi hizo reverencia a Joab, y corrió.
Then said Joab to the Cushite, Go tell the king what thou hast seen. And the Cushite bowed himself unto Joab, and ran.
22 Y Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc, tornó a decir a Joab: Sea lo que fuere, yo correré ahora tras Cusi. Y Joab dijo: Hijo mío, ¿para qué has tú de correr, que no hallarás premio por las nuevas?
Then said Ahimaaz the son of Zadok yet again to Joab, But come what may, let me, I pray thee, also run after the Cushite. And Joab said, Wherefore wilt thou run, my son, seeing that thou wilt have no reward for the tidings?
23 Y él respondió: Sea lo que fuere, yo correré; y Joab le dijo: Corre. Y Aquimaas corrió por el camino de la campaña, y pasó delante de Cusi.
But come what may, [said he], I will run. And he said unto him, Run. Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and overran the Cushite.
24 Y David estaba asentado entre las dos puertas, y el atalaya había ido sobre la techumbre de la puerta en el muro, y alzando sus ojos, miró y vio a uno que corría solo.
Now David sat between the two gates: and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate unto the wall, and lifted up his eyes, and looked, and, behold, a man running alone.
25 Y el atalaya dio voces, e hízolo saber al rey. Y el rey dijo: Si es solo, buenas nuevas trae. Y él venía acercándose.
And the watchman cried, and told the king. And the king said, If he be alone, there is tidings in his mouth. And he came apace, and drew near.
26 El atalaya vio otro que corría: y dio voces el atalaya al portero, diciendo: Hé un hombre que corre solo. Y el rey dijo: Este también es mensajero.
And the watchman saw another man running: and the watchman called unto the porter, and said, Behold, [another] man running alone. And the king said, He also bringeth tidings.
27 Y el atalaya volvió a decir: Paréceme el correr del primero, como el correr de Aquimaas, hijo de Sadoc. Y el rey respondió: Ese hombre es de bien, y viene con buena nueva.
And the watchman said, Me thinketh the running of the foremost is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok. And the king said, He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings.
28 Entonces Aquimaas dijo a alta voz al rey: Paz. E inclinóse a tierra delante del rey, y dijo: Bendito sea Jehová Dios tuyo, que ha entregado los hombres, que habían levantado sus manos contra mi señor el rey.
And Ahimaaz called, and said unto the king, All is well. And he bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, Blessed be the LORD thy God, which hath delivered up the men that lifted up their hand against my lord the king.
29 Y el rey dijo: ¿El mozo Absalom, tiene paz? Y Aquimaas respondió: Yo ví un grande alboroto, cuando Joab envió al siervo del rey, y a mí tu siervo, mas no sé que era.
And the king said, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And Ahimaaz answered, When Joab sent the king’s servant, even me thy servant, I saw a great tumult, but I knew not what it was.
30 Y el rey dijo: Pasa, y pónte allí. Y él pasó, y paróse.
And the king said, Turn aside, and stand here. And he turned aside, and stood still.
31 Y luego vino Cusi, y dijo: Reciba nueva mi señor el rey, que hoy Jehová ha defendido tu causa de la mano de todos los que se habían levantado contra ti.
And, behold, the Cushite came; and the Cushite said, Tidings for my lord the king: for the LORD hath avenged thee this day of all them that rose up against thee.
32 El rey entonces dijo a Cusi: ¿El mozo Absalom tiene paz? Y Cusi respondió: Como aquel mozo sean los enemigos de mi señor el rey, y todos los que se levantan contra ti para mal.
And the king said unto the Cushite, Is it well with the young man Absalom? And the Cushite answered, The enemies of my lord the king, and all that rise up against thee to do thee hurt, be as that young man is.
33 Entonces el rey se turbó, y subióse a la sala de la puerta, y lloró, y yendo decía así: ¡Hijo mío, Absalom! ¡hijo mío, hijo mío, Absalom! ¡quién me diera, que yo muriera en lugar de ti, Absalom, hijo mío, hijo mío!
And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!
