San Lucas 14

1 Al entrar un sábado en casa de uno de los jefes de los fariseos para comer pan, le estaban vigilando.

And it came to pass, when Jesus went into the house of one of the chief of the Pharisees, on the sabbath day, to eat bread, that they watched him.

2 He aquí que un hombre que tenía hidropesía estaba delante de él.

And behold, there was a certain man before him that had the dropsy.

3 Respondiendo Jesús, habló a los letrados y fariseos, diciendo: “¿Es lícito curar en sábado?”

And Jesus answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying: Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath day?

4 Pero ellos guardaron silencio. Lo tomó, lo curó y lo dejó ir.

But they held their peace. But he taking him, healed him, and sent him away.

5 Les respondió: “¿Quién de vosotros, si su hijo o su buey cayera en un pozo, no lo sacaría inmediatamente en un día de reposo?”

And answering them, he said: Which of you shall have an ass or an ox fall into a pit, and will not immediately draw him out, on the sabbath day?

6 No pudieron responderle sobre estas cosas.

And they could not answer him to these things.

7 Dijo una parábola a los invitados, al notar que elegían los mejores asientos, y les dijo:

And he spoke a parable also to them that were invited, marking how they chose the first seats at the table, saying to them:

8 “Cuando alguien os invite a un banquete de bodas, no os sentéis en el mejor asiento, pues tal vez alguien más honorable que vosotros sea invitado por él,

When thou art invited to a wedding, sit not down in the first place, lest perhaps one more honourable than thou be invited by him:

9 y el que os invitó a los dos vendría y os diría: “Haced sitio a esta persona”. Entonces empezaríais, con vergüenza, a ocupar el lugar más bajo.

And he that invited thee and him, come and say to thee, Give this man place: and then thou begin with shame to take the lowest place.

10 Pero cuando te inviten, ve y siéntate en el lugar más bajo, para que cuando venga el que te invitó, te diga: ‘Amigo, sube más arriba’. Entonces serás honrado en presencia de todos los que se sienten a la mesa contigo.

But when thou art invited, go, sit down in the lowest place; that when he who invited thee, cometh, he may say to thee: Friend, go up higher. Then shalt thou have glory before them that sit at table with thee.

11 Porque todo el que se enaltece será humillado, y el que se humilla será enaltecido”.

Because every one that exalteth himself, shall be humbled; and he that humbleth himself, shall be exalted.

12 También le dijo al que le había invitado: “Cuando hagas una cena o un banquete, no llames a tus amigos, ni a tus hermanos, ni a tus parientes, ni a los vecinos ricos, porque tal vez ellos también te devuelvan el favor y te lo paguen.

And he said to him also that had invited him: When thou makest a dinner or a supper, call not thy friends, nor thy brethren, nor thy kinsmen, nor thy neighbours who are rich; lest perhaps they also invite thee again, and a recompense be made to thee.

13 Pero cuando hagas un banquete, pide a los pobres, a los mancos, a los cojos o a los ciegos;

But when thou makest a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind;

14 y serás bendecido, porque ellos no tienen recursos para pagarte. Porque te lo pagarán en la resurrección de los justos”.

And thou shalt be blessed, because they have not wherewith to make thee recompense: for recompense shall be made thee at the resurrection of the just.

15 Cuando uno de los que se sentaba a la mesa con él oyó estas cosas, le dijo: “¡Bienaventurado el que festejará en el Reino de Dios!”

When one of them that sat at table with him, had heard these things, he said to him: Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God.

16 Pero él le dijo: “Un hombre hizo una gran cena, e invitó a mucha gente.

But he said to him: A certain man made a great supper, and invited many.

17 A la hora de la cena mandó a su criado a decir a los invitados: “Venid, porque ya está todo preparado”.

And he sent his servant at the hour of supper to say to them that were invited, that they should come, for now all things are ready.

18 Todos a una comenzaron a excusarse. “El primero le dijo: ‘He comprado un campo y debo ir a verlo. Te ruego que me disculpes’.

And they began all at once to make excuse. The first said to him: I have bought a farm, and I must needs go out and see it: I pray thee, hold me excused.

19 “Otro dijo: ‘He comprado cinco yuntas de bueyes y debo ir a probarlos. Te ruego que me disculpes’.

And another said: I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to try them: I pray thee, hold me excused.

20 “Otro dijo: ‘Me he casado con una mujer, y por eso no puedo venir’.

And another said: I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.

21 “Llegó aquel siervo y le contó a su señor estas cosas. Entonces el señor de la casa, enojado, dijo a su siervo: ‘Sal pronto a las calles y a las callejuelas de la ciudad, y trae a los pobres, a los mancos, a los ciegos y a los cojos’.

And the servant returning, told these things to his lord. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant: Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the feeble, and the blind, and the lame.

22 “El siervo dijo: ‘Señor, está hecho como lo has mandado, y todavía hay lugar’.

And the servant said: Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room.

23 “El señor dijo al criado: ‘Sal a los caminos y a los setos y oblígalos a entrar, para que se llene mi casa.

And the Lord said to the servant: Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.

24 Porque te digo que ninguno de esos hombres invitados probará mi cena’”.

But I say unto you, that none of those men that were invited, shall taste of my supper.

25 Iban con él grandes multitudes. Se volvió y les dijo:

And there went great multitudes with him. And turning, he said to them:

26 “Si alguien viene a mí y no se desentiende de su padre, de su madre, de su mujer, de sus hijos, de sus hermanos y hermanas, y también de su propia vida, no puede ser mi discípulo.

If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

27 El que no lleva su propia cruz y viene en pos de mí, no puede ser mi discípulo.

And whosoever doth not carry his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

28 Porque ¿quién de vosotros, queriendo construir una torre, no se sienta primero a contar lo que cuesta, para ver si tiene lo suficiente para terminarla?

For which of you having a mind to build a tower, doth not first sit down, and reckon the charges that are necessary, whether he have wherewithal to finish it:

29 O acaso, cuando ha puesto los cimientos y no puede terminar, todos los que lo ven comienzan a burlarse de él,

Lest, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that see it begin to mock him,

30 diciendo: “Este empezó a construir y no pudo terminar”.

Saying: This man began to build, and was not able to finish.

31 ¿O qué rey, cuando va a enfrentarse a otro rey en la guerra, no se sienta primero a considerar si es capaz con diez mil de enfrentarse al que viene contra él con veinte mil?

Or what king, about to go to make war against another king, doth not first sit down, and think whether he be able, with ten thousand, to meet him that, with twenty thousand, cometh against him?

32 O bien, estando el otro todavía muy lejos, envía un enviado y pide condiciones de paz.

Or else, whilst the other is yet afar off, sending an embassy, he desireth conditions of peace.

33 Así pues, cualquiera de vosotros que no renuncie a todo lo que tiene, no puede ser mi discípulo.

So likewise every one of you that doth not renounce all that he possesseth, cannot be my disciple.

34 “La sal es buena, pero si la sal se vuelve plana e insípida, ¿con qué la condimentas?

Salt is good. But if the salt shall lose its savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?

35 No sirve ni para la tierra ni para el montón de estiércol. Se desecha. El que tenga oídos para oír, que oiga”.

It is neither profitable for the land nor for the dunghill, but shall be cast out. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
