Jueces 8

1 Dijeron los hombres de Efraím a Gedeón: “¿Qué es esto que has hecho con nosotros, eso de no llamarnos cuando saliste a combatir contra Madián?” Y se querellaron reciamente contra él.

And the men of Ephraim said unto him—What is this thing thou hast done to us, in not calling us, when thou wentest to fight with Midian? And they did chide with him, sharply.

2 Les respondió: “¿Qué he hecho yo que se pueda comparar con lo vuestro? ¿No es mejor la rebusca de Efraím que la vendimia de Abiéser?

And he said unto them, What have I done, now, in comparison with you? Is not the grape-gleaning of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer?

3 En vuestras manos ha entregado Dios a los príncipes de Madián, Oreb y Zeeb. ¿Qué he hecho yo que se pueda comparar con lo vuestro?” Con esta respuesta se calmó la ira que contra él habían concebido.

Into your hand, hath God delivered the princes of Midian—Oreb and Zeeb, what then had I been able to do in comparison with you? Then, was their spirit softened toward him, when he had spoken this word.

4 Gedeón llegó al Jordán, y lo cruzó con los trescientos hombres que tenía consigo, cansados, pero prosiguiendo la persecución.

And Gideon came towards the Jordan, being about to pass over—he, and the three hundred men who were with him, faint yet pursuing.

5 Y dijo a los hombres de Sucot: “Dadme, por favor, pan para la gente que me sigue, porque están cansados, y estoy persiguiendo a Zébah y Salmaná, reyes de Madián.”

So he said unto the men of Succoth, Give, I pray you, loaves of bread to the people that are following me; for, faint, they are, and, I, am in pursuit of Zebah and Zalmunna, kings of Midian.

6 Contestaron los jefes de Sucot: “¿Acaso los puños de Zébah y Salmaná están ya en tu mano para que demos pan a tu tropa?”

And the princes of Succoth said, Are the palms of the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in thy power, —that we should give to thine army bread?

7 Gedeón respondió: “Por eso, cuando entregue Yahvé a Zébah y a Salmaná en mi mano, azotaré vuestras carnes con espinas del desierto y con cardos.”

And Gideon said, Therefore, when Yahweh hath delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my power, then will I tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness, and with the nettles.

8 De allí subió a Fanuel y les habló de la misma manera; mas los hombres de Fanuel le respondieron del mismo modo que los de Sucot.

So he went up from thence, to Penuel, and spake unto them in like manner, —and the men of Penuel answered him, as had answered the men of Succoth.

9 Dijo también a los hombres de Fanuel: “Cuando vuelva yo en paz derribaré esta torre.”

So he spake to the men of Penuel also, saying, —When I return with success, I will break down this tower.

10 Zébah y Salmaná estaban en Carcor, y su ejército con ellos, unos quince mil hombres, el resto de todo aquel ejército de los hijos del Oriente, habiendo perecido ya ciento veinte mil hombres que llevaban espada.

Now, Zebah and Zalmunna, were in Karkor, and their hosts with them, about fifteen thousand, all that were left out of all the host of the sons of the east, —and, the fallen, were a hundred and twenty thousand men, who had drawn the sword.

11 Gedeón subió por el camino de los nómadas, al oriente de Noba y Jegbaá, y derrotó el campamento, pues el ejército, no temía peligro.

So Gideon went up by the way of the tent-dwellers, on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah, and smote the host, when, the host, had become secure.

12 Huyeron Zébah y Salmaná; más él, en la persecución prendió a los dos reyes de Madián, Zébah y Salmaná, e hizo temblar a todo su ejército.

And when Zebah and Zalmunna fled, then he pursued them, and captured the two kings of Midian—Zebah and Zalmunna, and, all the host, put he in terror.

13 Entre tanto, Gedeón, hijo de Joás, volviendo de la batalla por la subida de Heres,

And Gideon son of Joash returned from the battle, —from the ascent of Heres;

14 prendió a un muchacho de los habitantes de Sucot. Le interrogó, y este le apuntó los nombres de los jefes de Sucot y sus ancianos, setenta y siete hombres.

and caught a young man, of the men of Succoth, and enquired of him, —so he wrote down for him the princes of Succoth, and the elders thereof, seventy-seven men.

15 Llegado a los hombres de Sucot dijo Gedeón: “Ved aquí a Zébah y Salmaná con motivo de los cuales me zaheristeis diciendo: «¿Acaso los puños de Zébah y Salmaná están ya en tu mano, para que demos pan a tus hombres cansados?»”

Then came he in unto the men of Succoth, and said, Lo! Zebah and Zalmunna, —concerning whom ye did taunt me, saying—Are the palms of the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna already in thy power, that we should give to thy weary men bread?

16 Tomó entonces a los ancianos de la ciudad, y espinas del desierto y cardos, y con estos dio una lección a los hombres de Sucot.

So he took the elders of the city, and the thorns of the wilderness and the nettles, and taught therewith the men of Succoth:

17 Arrasó también la torre de Fanuel, y dio muerte a los hombres de la ciudad.

the tower of Penuel also, brake he down, —and slew the men of the city.

18 A Zébah y a Salmaná les dijo: “¿Cómo eran los hombres que matasteis en el Tabor?” Contestaron: “Como tú, así eran ellos; cada uno parecía hijo de un rey.”

Then said he unto Zebah and unto Zalmunna, What manner of men were they, whom ye slew at Tabor? And they said, As thou art, so were they, each one, as handsome as the sons of a king.

19 Replicó Gedeón: “Eran mis hermanos, los hijos de mi misma madre. ¡Vive Yahvé, que no os mataría, si les hubieses conservado la vida!”

And he said: My brethren, sons of my mother, they were! As Yahweh liveth, if ye had saved them alive, I would not have slain you.

20 Luego dijo a Jéter, su primogénito: “¡Levántate, mátalos!” Pero el joven no sacó la espada, por temor, siendo como era aún joven.

So he said to Jether his firstborn, Up! slay them. But the youth drew not his sword, for he feared, because he was yet a youth.

21 Entonces dijeron Zébah y Salmaná: “Levántate tú y danos el golpe; porque como es el hombre, así es su fuerza.” Se levantó Gedeón y mató a Zébah y a Salmaná y tomó las lunetas que se hallaban al cuello de sus camellos.

Then said Zebah and Zalmunna—Up! thou, and fall upon us, for, like the man, is his might. So Gideon arose, and slew Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescents that were on the necks of their camels.

22 Los hombres de Israel dijeron a Gedeón: “Reina tú sobre nosotros, tú, tu hijo, y los hijos de tu hijo, ya que nos has librado del poder de Madián.”

Then said the men of Israel, unto Gideon, Rule over us—even thou, and thy son, and thy son’s son, —for thou hast saved us out of the power of Midian.

23 Gedeón les respondió: “No reinaré yo sobre vosotros, ni reinará mi hijo sobre vosotros. Yahvé sea quien reine sobre vosotros.”

And Gideon said unto them, I, will not rule over you, neither shall my son rule over you, —Yahweh, shall rule over you.

24 Y les añadió Gedeón: “Voy a pediros una cosa, y es que me dé cada cual un zarcillo de su despojo”; pues (los enemigos) llevaban zarcillos de oro por ser ismaelitas.

And Gideon said unto them—I would make to you a request, Give me, then, every man the nose-ring of his spoil. For they had, nose-rings of gold, for, Ishmaelites, they were.

25 Ellos respondieron: “Con mucho gusto te lo daremos”. Tendieron pues, un manto, y cada uno echó allí un zarcillo de su botín.

And they said, We will, freely give. So they spread out a mantle, and cast therein, every man the nose-ring of his spoil.

26 Y fue el peso de los zarcillos de oro que había pedido, de mil setecientos siclos de oro; sin contar las lunetas y pendientes, ni los vestidos de púrpura que los reyes de Madián llevaban, ni los collares que se hallaban al cuello de sus camellos.

And so it was, that the weight of the nose-rings of gold which he requested, was a thousand and seven hundred [shekels] of gold, —besides the crescents, and the pendants, and the raiment of purple that were upon the kings of Midian, and besides the ornaments that were on the necks of their camels.

27 De esto hizo Gedeón un efod, y lo depositó en su ciudad, en Ofrá; y todo Israel cometía allí idolatría con ese (efod), lo cual vino a ser un lazo para Gedeón y su casa.

And Gideon made thereof an Ephod, and set it up in his own city, in Ophrah, and all Israel went unchastely astray after it there, —so it became, to Gideon and to his house, a snare.

28 Así fue humillado Madián ante los hijos de Israel, y no volvió más a levantar cabeza. Y tuvo el país en los días de Gedeón un descanso de cuarenta años.

Thus was Midian subdued, before the sons of Israel, neither did they again lift up their head, —and the land had rest forty years, in the days of Gideon.

29 Partió después Jerobaal, hijo de Joás, y habitó en su casa.

So then Jerubbaal, son of Joash, went and dwelt in his own house.

30 Y tuvo Gedeón setenta hijos, todos nacidos de él, porque tenía muchas mujeres.

And, Gideon, had seventy sons, sprung from his own loins, —for, many wives, had he.

31 También una de sus mujeres secundarias que estaba en Siquem, le dio un hijo, al que puso por nombre Abimelec.

And, his concubine who was in Shechem, she also, bare him a son, —and he gave him the name of Abimelech.

32 Murió Gedeón, hijo de Joás, en buena vejez, y fue enterrado en la sepultura de su padre Joás, en Ofrá de los hijos de Abiéser.

And Gideon, son of Joash, died in a good old age, —and was buried in the grave of Joash his father, in Ophrah, of the Abiezrites.

33 Muerto Gedeón, los hijos de Israel volvieron a fornicar tras los Baales, y pusieron a Baal-Berit por dios suyo.

And it came to pass that, as soon as Gideon was dead, the sons of Israel turned back, and went unchastely astray after the Baals, —and appointed them Baal-berith, to be god:

34 No se acordaron los hijos de Israel de Yahvé su Dios, que los había librado del poder de todos sus enemigos a la redonda.

so the sons of Israel remembered not Yahweh, their own God, —who had rescued them out of the hand of all their enemies, on every side;

35 Tampoco usaron de piedad con la casa de Jerobaal- Gedeón, por todo el bien que él había hecho a Israel.

neither dealt they in lovingkindness with the house of Jerubbaal [namely] Gideon, —according to all the goodness wherewith he had dealt with Israel.
