Isaías 36

1 El año catorce del rey Ezequías, subió Senaquerib, rey de Asiria, contra todas las ciudades fuertes de Judá, y se apoderó de ellas.

In the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, Sennacherib, king of Assyria, attacked all the fortified cities of Judah and captured them.

2 Y envió el rey de Asiria a Rabsacés, con muchas tropas, desde Laquís a Jerusalén, al rey Ezequías. (Rabsacés) tomó posición junto al acueducto del estanque superior, en el camino del campo del Batanero.

Then the king of Assyria sent the chief commander from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a great army. He approached the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway to the launderers' field, and stood by it.

3 Salieron a encontrarlo Eliaquim, hijo de Helcías, prefecto del palacio, Sobná secretario, y Joan, hijo de Asaf, canciller.

The Israelite officials who went out of the city to talk with them were Hilkiah's son Eliakim, the palace administrator, Shebna the king's secretary, and Asaph's son Joah, who wrote down the government decisions.

4 Y les dijo Rabsacés: “Decid a Ezequías: Así dice el gran rey, el rey de Asiria: ¿Qué confianza es esa en que te apoyas?

The chief commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah that the great king, the king of Assyria, says, 'What is the source of your confidence?

5 Yo digo que tu designio y tus esfuerzos en hacerme la guerra no son más que vanas palabras. ¿En quién confías para rebelarte contra mí?

You speak only useless words, saying there is counsel and strength for war. Now in whom are you trusting? Who has given you courage to rebel against me?

6 He aquí que cuentas con el apoyo de Egipto, esa caña cascada, que penetra y horada la mano del que se apoya en ella. Así es el Faraón, rey de Egipto, para cuantos en él confían.

Look, you are trusting in Egypt, that splintered reed that you use as a walking staff, but if a man leans on it, it will stick into his hand and pierce it. That is what Pharaoh king of Egypt is to anyone who trusts in him.

7 Y si me decís: «Nosotros confiamos en Yahvé, Dios nuestro», ¿no es acaso ese el mismo cuyos lugares altos y altares ha destruido Ezequías, diciendo a Judá y a Jerusalén: «Ante este altar habéis de postraros»?

But if you say to me, “We are trusting in Yahweh our God,” is not he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah has taken away, and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem”?

8 Entiende con mi señor, el rey de Asiria, y yo te daré dos mil caballos, si tú puedes encontrar jinetes para ellos.

Now therefore, I want to make you a good offer from my master the king of Assyria. I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able to find riders for them.

9 ¿Cómo vas tú a hacer frente a un solo jefe, aunque fuese de los menores servidores de mi señor? Pero tú pones tu confianza en Egipto a causa de los carros y de la caballería.

How could you resist even one captain of the least of my master's servants? You have put your trust in Egypt for chariots and horsemen!

10 Ahora, ¿he acaso subido yo sin Yahvé, contra esta tierra para destruirla? Es Yahvé mismo quien me ha dicho: ¡Sube contra esta tierra y destrúyela!”

Now then, have I traveled up here without Yahweh to fight against this land and destroy it? Yahweh said to me, “Attack this land and destroy it.”'”

11 Entonces Eliaquim, Sobná y Joah dijeron a Rabsacés: “Habla, por favor, en arameo con tus siervos, pues lo entendemos, y no nos hables en judaico delante de esa gente que está sobre la muralla.”

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebnah, and Joah said to the chief commander, “Please speak to your servants in the Aramean language, Aramaic, for we understand it. Do not speak with us in the language of Judah in the ears of the people who are on the wall.”

12 Respondió Rabsacés: “¿Por ventura me ha enviado mi señor a decir estas cosas a tu señor y a ti, y no más bien a estos hombres, sentados sobre el muro para comerse con vosotros sus propios excrementos y a beberse sus propios orines?”

But the chief commander said, “Has my master sent me to your master and to you to speak these words? Has he not sent me to the men who sit on the wall, who will have to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”

13 Y se puso en pie Rabsacés y gritó a gran voz en lengua judaica, diciendo: “Oíd lo que dice el gran rey, el rey de Asiria.

Then the chief commander stood and shouted in a loud voice in the Jews' language, saying, “Listen to the words of the great king, the king of Assyria.

14 Así dice el rey: No os engañe Ezequías, pues no podrá libraros.

The king says, 'Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, for he will not be able to rescue you.

15 Tampoco os haga confiar Ezequías en Yahvé, diciendo: Sin falta nos librara Yahvé; no será entregada esta ciudad en manos del rey de Asiria.

Do not let Hezekiah make you trust in Yahweh, saying, “Yahweh will surely rescue us; this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.”'

16 No escuchéis a Ezequías; pues así dice el rey de Asiria: Haced paces conmigo, y venid a mí, y cada uno comerá de su vid y de su higuera, y cada uno beberá el agua de su cisterna,

Do not listen to Hezekiah, for this is what the king of Assyria says: 'Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one of you will eat from his own vine and from his own fig tree, and drink from the water in his own cistern.

17 hasta que yo venga y os lleve a una tierra parecida a la vuestra, tierra de trigo y de vino, tierra de pan y de viñas.

You will do this until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards.'

18 Por eso, no os engañe Ezequías, diciendo: Yahvé nos librará. ¿Acaso los dioses de los pueblos han salvado su respectiva tierra de las manos del rey de Asiria?

Do not let Hezekiah mislead you, saying, 'Yahweh will rescue us.' Has any of the gods of the peoples rescued them from the hand of the king of Assyria?

19 ¿Dónde están los dioses de Hamat y Arpad? ¿Dónde los dioses de Sefarvaim? ¿Acaso han librado a Samaria de mis manos?

Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of Sepharvaim? Have they rescued Samaria from my power?

20 ¿Cuál de todos los dioses de estos países pudo salvar su tierra de mi mano? Mucho menos podrá Yahvé librar de mi mano a Jerusalén.”

Among all the gods of these lands, is there any god who has rescued his land from my power, as if Yahweh could save Jerusalem from my power?”

21 Ellos quedaron callados, y no le respondieron palabra, porque así lo había mandado el rey, diciendo: “No le respondáis.”

But the people remained silent and did not respond, for the king's order was, “Do not answer him.”

22 Mas Eliaquim, hijo de Helcías, prefecto del palacio, Sobná secretario, y Joah, hijo de Asaf, canciller, rasgaron sus vestidos, y regresados a Ezequías le refirieron las palabras de Rabsacés.

Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, Shebna the scribe, and Joah son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn, and reported to him the words of the chief commander.
