Éxodo 1

1 Estos son los nombres de los hijos de Israel que entraron en Egipto con Jacob, cada uno con su familia:

Now, these, are the names of the Sons of Israel, who came into Egypt, with Jacob, did each man and his household come in: —

2 Rubén, Simeón, Leví, Judá,

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah;

3 Isacar, Zabulón, Benjamín,

Issachar, Zebulon, and Benjamin;

4 Dan, Neftalí, Gad y Aser.

Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher.

5 Todos los descendientes nacidos de Jacob eran setenta almas. José estaba ya en Egipto.

And it came to pass that all the persons who were descended from Jacob were seventy souls, —but, Joseph, was already in Egypt.

6 Luego murió José, y todos sus hermanos, y toda aquella generación.

So then Joseph died and all his brethren, and all that generation.

7 Mas los hijos de Israel crecieron y se multiplicaron, y llegaron a ser numerosos y fuertes, y se llenó de ellos el país.

But the sons of Israel, were fruitful and swarmed and multiplied and waxed mighty, with exceeding vigour, —so that the land was filled with them.

8 Entretanto se alzó sobre Egipto un nuevo rey, que nada sabía de José;

Then arose a new king over Egypt, —who had not known Joseph.

9 el cual dijo a su pueblo: “Mirad, el pueblo de los hijos de Israel es más numeroso y más fuerte que nosotros.

So he said, unto his people, Lo! the people of the sons of Israel are too many and mighty for us!

10 Tomemos, pues, precauciones contra él, no sea que siga multiplicándose, y en caso de venir sobre nosotros una guerra, se asocie también él a nuestros enemigos para combatirnos, y salga (después) del país.”

Come on! let us shew ourselves wise with regard to them, lest they so multiply that it shall come to pass when war befalleth us, that they also, shall join themselves unto them who hate us, and shall make war upon us. and then go up out of the land.

11 Por lo cual pusieron sobre (Israel), sobrestantes de trabajos a fin de oprimirlos con sus cargas; y así edificaron para el Faraón ciudades almacenes: Pitom y Ramesés.

So they set over them chiefs of tribute, to the end they might humiliate them with their burdens, —and they built store-cities for Pharaoh, even Pithom and Raamses.

12 Pero cuanto más los oprimían, tanto más crecían y tanto más se multiplicaban, de modo que (los egipcios) tomaron aversión a los hijos de Israel.

But the more they were humiliating them, the more, were they multiplying, and, the more, were they breaking forth, so they were filled with alarm because of the sons of Israel.

13 Entonces los egipcios redujeron a cruel servidumbre a los hijos de Israel,

And the Egyptians rigorously made the sons of Israel serve;

14 y les amargaron la vida con duros trabajos de arcilla y ladrillos, toda suerte de labores del campo y toda clase de servidumbre con que los oprimían por fuerza.

and embittered their lives with harsh service, in clay and in bricks, and in all manner of service in the field, —all their service, wherein they rigorously made them serve.

15 El rey de Egipto dio también orden a las parteras de las hebreas, de las cuales una se llamaba Sifrá, y la otra Puá,

Then said the king of Egypt to the Hebrew midwives, —of whom, the name of the one was, Shiphrah, and, the name of the other Puah; —

16 diciéndoles: “Cuando asistáis a las hebreas en sus partos, averiguad el sexo; si es niño, matadlo; mas si es niña, vivirá.”

then he said—When ye act as midwives unto the Hebrew women, then shall ye look out for the sex, —If it is, a son, then shall ye kill it, But, if it is, a daughter, then shall it live.

17 Pero las parteras temían a Dios, y no hicieron como les había mandado el rey de Egipto, sino que dejaban con vida a los niños.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt spake unto them, —but suffered the male children to live.

18 Por lo cual llamó el rey de Egipto a las parteras y les dijo: “¿Por qué hacéis esto y dejáis con vida a los niños?”

Then called the king of Egypt for the midwives, and said to them—Wherefore have ye done this thing, that ye should let the male children live?

19 Respondieron las parteras al Faraón: “Porque las hebreas no son como las egipcias. Son robustas, y antes que a ellas llegue la partera, ya han dado a luz.”

And the midwives said unto Pharaoh. Because not like the Egyptian women, are the Hebrew women, for they are full of life, ere yet the midwife can come in unto them, they have given birth,

20 Recompensó Dios a las parteras; y se multiplicó el pueblo y se hizo muy poderoso.

So then God dealt well with the midwives, —and the people multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty.

21 Y por haber temido las parteras a Dios, Él les dio numerosa prole.

And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that he made for them households.

22 Entonces dio el Faraón a todo su pueblo esta orden: “Todo niño que naciere (a los hebreos) lo echaréis al río; mas a toda niña dejaréis con vida.”

Then gave Pharaoh command to all his people saying—Every son that is born to the Hebrews, into the river, shall ye cast him; But every daughter, shall ye suffer to live.
