Deuteronomio 4

1 Ahora, oh Israel, escucha las leyes y los decretos que os enseño a practicar para que viváis y entréis a poseer la tierra que Yahvé vuestro Dios os ha de dar.

Now, therefore, O Israel, hearken thou unto the statutes, and unto the regulations, which, I, am teaching you, to do [them], —to the end ye may live and enter and possess the land, which, Yahweh, the God of your fathers, is giving unto you.

2 No añadáis nada a lo que os prescribo, ni quitéis nada de ello; antes guardad los mandamientos de Yahvé, vuestro Dios, que os ordeno.

Ye shall not add unto the word which, I, am commanding you, neither shall ye take away therefrom, —that ye may keep the commandments of Yahweh your God, which, I, am commanding you.

3 Vuestros ojos han visto lo que hizo Yahvé contra Baalfegor; pues Yahvé, vuestro Dios, ha extirpado de en medio de vosotros todos los que siguieron a Baalfegor.

Yours are the eyes, that have seen what Yahweh did in Baal-peor, for every man who went after Baal-peor, did Yahweh thy God destroy out of thy midst;

4 Vosotros, empero, los que permanecisteis fieles a Yahvé, vuestro Dios, estáis al presente todos con vida.

but, ye who kept on cleaving unto Yahweh your God, alive, are ye all to-day.

5 Mirad: os enseño leyes y decretos, como Yahvé, mi Dios, me ha mandado, para que los practiquéis en el país que vais a poseer.

See! I have taught you statutes, and regulations, as Yahweh my God commanded me, —that ye should do so, in the midst of the land whereinto ye are entering to possess it.

6 Observadlos y ponedlos en práctica; porque en esto consistirá vuestra sabiduría y vuestra inteligencia a los ojos de las naciones, que al conocer todas estas leyes dirán: En verdad, un pueblo sabio y entendido es esta gran nación.

Therefore shall ye observe, and do [them], for that, will be your wisdom, and discernment, in the eyes of the peoples, —who will hear all these statutes, and will say—Nevertheless, a people wise and discerning, is this great nation.

7 Porque ¿qué nación hay tan grande que tenga dioses tan cercanos a sí como Yahvé, Dios nuestro, está cerca de nosotros siempre que lo invocamos?

For what great nation is there which hath gods nigh unto it, —like Yahweh our God, whensoever we have cried out unto him.

8 ¿Y qué nación hay tan grande que tenga leyes y preceptos tan justos como toda esta Ley que yo hoy os pongo delante?

Or what great nation which hath righteous statutes and regulations, like all this law, which, I, am setting before you to-day?

9 Pero ten cuidado y guarda bien tu alma, para que no olvides las cosas que han visto tus ojos, ni se aparten de tu corazón en ningún momento de tu vida; antes bien, enséñalas a tus hijos y a los hijos de tus hijos.

Only take thou heed to thyself and keep thy soul diligently, so that thou forget not the things which thine own eyes have seen, and so that they go not out of thy heart, all the days of thy life, —but thou shalt make them known unto thy sons and unto thy sons’ sons: —

10 Ten presente el día que estuviste delante de Yahvé, Dios tuyo, en el Horeb, cuando Yahvé me dijo: Junta al pueblo para que oigan mis palabras y aprendan a temerme todo el tiempo que vivan sobre la tierra y las enseñen a sus hijos.

What day thou didst stand before Yahweh thy God, in Horeb, when Yahweh said unto me, Gather unto me the people, that I may let them hear my words, —which they must learn that they may revere me all the days which they are living upon the soil, their children also, must they teach.

11 Entonces os acercasteis, y estuvisteis al pie del monte, mientras el monte ardía en fuego que se elevaba hasta lo más alto del cielo, entre oscuridad y nube y densas tinieblas.

So ye drew near and stood, under the mountain. Now, the mountain, was burning with fire, up to the midst of the heavens, —darkness, cloud, and thick gloom.

12 Y Yahvé os habló de en medio del fuego; oísteis el sonido de las palabras, pero no visteis figura alguna; era solo una voz.

Then spake Yahweh unto you out of the midst of the fire, —a voice of words, ye were hearing, no form, were ye seeing, there was only a voice.

13 El os promulgó su pacto y os mandó observarlo: los diez Mandamientos, que escribió en dos tablas de piedra.

Then declared he unto you his covenant which he commanded you to do, the ten words, —and wrote them upon two tables of stone.

14 En aquel tiempo me mandó que os enseñase leyes y preceptos que debíais practicar en el país adonde vais a pasar para tomarlo en posesión.

And unto me, gave Yahweh command, at that time, to teach you statutes and regulations, —that ye should do them, in the land whereinto ye are passing over to possess it.

15 Guardad bien vuestras almas —pues no visteis figura alguna el día que Yahvé habló con vosotros en el Horeb, de en medio del fuego—

Ye must take diligent heed, therefore unto your own souls, for ye saw no manner of form, on the day Yahweh spake unto you in Horeb out of the midst of the fire;

16 no sea que corrompiéndoos os hagáis estatuas, figuras de ídolos, imágenes de hombre o de mujer,

lest ye should break faith, and make you an image, a form of any likeness, —a model of male or female;

17 representación de alguna de las bestias que viven sobre la tierra, imagen de cualquier ave que vuela debajo del cielo,

a model of any beast that is in the earth, —a model of any winged bird, that flieth in the heavens;

18 figura de algún animal que se arrastra sobre el suelo, o imagen de peces que viven en las aguas debajo de la tierra;

a model of any thing that creepeth on the ground, —a model of any fish that is in the waters beneath the earth;

19 y no sea que alzando los ojos a los cielos, y viendo el sol, la luna y las estrellas con todo el ejército del cielo, te dejes seducir postrándote ante ellos y dando culto a esas creaturas que Yahvé, tu Dios, ha dado en suerte a todas las naciones debajo de todo el cielo.

or lest thou shouldest lift up thine eyes towards the heavens and see the sun and the moon, and the stars—all the host of the heavens, and shouldest be seduced, and shouldest bow thyself down to them and he led to serve them, —the which Yahweh thy God hath assigned unto all the peoples under all the heavens;

20 A vosotros, en cambio, os ha tomado Yahvé, y os ha sacado de aquel horno de hierro, Egipto, para que seáis el pueblo de su herencia, como al presente lo sois.

whereas you, hath Yahweh taken, and brought you forth out of a smelting-pot of iron, out of Egypt, —that ye might become his own inherited people as at this day.

21 Contra mí, empero, se irritó Yahvé por culpa vuestra, y juró que no pasaría yo el Jordán, ni entraría en aquella excelente tierra que Yahvé, Dios tuyo, te va a dar en posesión.

But, Yahweh shewed himself angry with me, for your sakes, —and sware that I should not pass over the Jordan, and that I should not enter into the good land, which, Yahweh thy God, is giving unto thee as an inheritance;

22 Pues voy a morir en esta tierra, y no voy a pasar el Jordán. Vosotros sí lo pasaréis y heredaréis esa excelente tierra.

for, I, am about to die in this land, I am not to pass over the Jordan, —but, ye, are to pass over, and possess this good land.

23 Guardaos de olvidaros del pacto que Yahvé, vuestro Dios, ha hecho con vosotros, ni os hagáis estatuas o figuras de cuanto Yahvé, tu Dios, te ha prohibido.

Take heed to yourselves lest ye forget the covenant of Yahweh your God, which he hath solemnised with you, —and so make for yourselves an image, the form of anything, the which Yahweh thy God hath forbidden thee;

24 Porque Yahvé, tu Dios, es un fuego devorador, un Dios celoso.

seeing that as for Yahweh thy God, a consuming fire, he is, —a jealous GOD.

25 Si después de haber engendrado hijos e hijos de hijos y morado largo tiempo en la tierra, os corrompiereis, fabricando estatuas o imágenes de cualquier cosa, haciendo lo que es malo a los ojos de Yahvé, vuestro Dios y provocando su ira,

When thou shalt beget sons, and sons’ sons, and become careless in the land and break faith and make an image the form of any thing, and shalt do the thing that is wicked in the eyes of Yahweh thy God provoking him to anger,

26 invoco hoy por testigo contra vosotros el cielo y la tierra, de que pronto seréis exterminados de la tierra adonde vais, pasando el Jordán para tomarla en posesión. No viviréis mucho tiempo en ella, sino que seréis del todo extirpados.

I take both the heavens and the earth to witness against you to-day, that ye shall, perish, speedily, from off the land which ye are passing over the Jordan to possess, —ye shall not prolong your days thereupon; for, ye shall surely be laid waste;

27 Yahvé os dispersará entre los pueblos, y quedaréis pocos en número entre las naciones adonde Yahvé os ha de llevar.

and Yahweh will scatter you among the peoples, —and ye shall have left remaining of you men easily counted, among the nations whither Yahweh will drive you;

28 Y allí serviréis a dioses, obra de manos de hombres, de leño y de piedra, que no ven ni oyen ni comen ni huelen.

and ye will serve there gods made by the hands of man, —wood or stone, which neither see nor hear nor eat nor smell.

29 Desde allí buscarás a Yahvé, Dios tuyo, y le hallarás, si le buscas con todo tu corazón y con toda tu alma.

If thou shalt seek from thence, Yahweh thy God, then shalt thou find him, —when thou shalt search after him with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.

30 En tu angustia, cuando vinieren sobre ti todas estas cosas, en los últimos tiempos, te convertirás a Yahvé, tu Dios, y escucharás su voz;

In thy distress, when all these things have found thee out—in the afterpart of the days, thou wilt return unto Yahweh thy God, and wilt hearken to his voice.

31 porque Yahvé, tu Dios, es un Dios misericordioso; no te abandonará, ni te destruirá, ni se olvidará del pacto que juró a tus padres.

For, a GOD of compassion, is Yahweh thy God, he will not forsake thee neither will he destroy thee, —nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.

32 Pregunta, te ruego, a los tiempos antiguos que te han precedido, desde el día en que creó Dios al hombre sobre la tierra, y de un cabo del cielo al otro, si jamás se ha visto cosa tan grande como esta o si se ha oído cosa semejante.

For ask, I pray you, of the former days which were before thee, even from the day when God created man upon the earth, yea from one end of the heavens even to the other end of the heavens, —whether aught was ever brought to pass, like this great thing, or was ever heard of like it:

33 ¿Hay por ventura pueblo alguno que oyese la voz de Dios que le hablaba de en medio del fuego, como tú lo oíste, sin perder la vida?

Did a people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of fire, as, thou, didst hear, and yet live?

34 ¿O hay dios alguno que viniese a escoger para sí un pueblo de entre los otros, con pruebas, señales y maravillas, y con guerra, mano fuerte, brazo extendido y proezas estupendas, como todo lo que Yahvé, vuestro Dios, hizo por vosotros en Egipto ante tus mismos ojos?

Or did a god ever make trial of entering in to take unto him a nation out of the midst of a nation, by provings, by signs and by wonders and by fighting, and by a firm hand and by a stretched-out arm, and by great terrors, —according to all that Yahweh your God did for you in Egypt, before your eyes?

35 A ti se te ha mostrado esto, para que sepas que Yahvé es Dios y no hay otro fuera de Él.

Thou, wast allowed to see that thou mightest know, that Yahweh, he is God, there is none other than he alone.

36 Desde el cielo te hizo oír su voz para enseñarte; y sobre la tierra te ha mostrado su gran fuego, y de en medio del fuego has oído sus palabras.

Out of the heavens, he let thee hear his voice to instruct thee, —and, upon the earth, he let thee see his great fire, and his own words, thou didst hear out of the midst of the fire.

37 Por cuanto amó a tus padres, eligió a sus descendientes después de ellos y te sacó de Egipto yendo delante de ti con su gran poder,

And because that he loved thy fathers, therefore chose he his seed after him, —and brought thee forth with his presence with his great might, out of Egypt;

38 para expulsar a tu paso naciones más grandes y más fuertes que tú, para introducirte y darte en herencia su tierra como se ve al presente.

to dispossess nations, greater and stronger than thou from before thee, —to bring thee in. to give unto thee their land for an inheritance: As at this day.

39 Reconócelo en este día y revuélvelo en tu corazón: Yahvé es Dios arriba en el cielo y abajo en la tierra y no hay otro.

So then thou must consider to-day, and bring it back to thy heart, that, Yahweh, he is God in the heavens above and upon the earth beneath, —there is none other.

40 Guarda sus leyes y sus mandamientos, que hoy te ordeno, para que te vaya bien, a ti y a tus hijos después de ti, y para que sean muchos tus días sobre la tierra que Yahvé, tu Dios, te dará para siempre”.

So shalt thou keep his statutes and his commandments which, I, am commanding thee to-day, that it may go well with thee, and with thy sons after thee, —and to the end thou mayest prolong thy days upon the soil, which Yahweh thy God, is giving thee, all the days.

41 Entonces Moisés destinó tres ciudades del otro lado del Jordán, al oriente,

Then, did Moses set apart three cities, over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun:

42 para que allí se refugiara el homicida que sin querer y sin previa enemistad hubiese matado a su prójimo, y para que huyendo a una de dichas ciudades, salve su vida:

that the manslayer might flee thither who should slay his neighbour unawares, he, not having hated him, aforetime, —and might flee unto one of these cities, and live:

43 Béser en el desierto, en la llanura, para los rubenitas; Ramot en Galaad para los gaditas; y Golán, en Basan, para los de Manasés.

namely Bezer, in the desert of the table-land, for the Reubenites, —and Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites, and Golan in Bashan, for the Manassites.

44 Esta es la ley que Moisés puso ante los ojos de los hijos de Israel.

This, then is the law which Moses set before the sons of Israel:

45 Estos son los testimonios, las leyes y los preceptos que Moisés dio a los hijos de Israel cuando salieron de Egipto,

These, are the testimonies, and the statutes and the regulations, —which Moses spake unto the sons of Israel when they came forth out of Egypt:

46 al otro lado del Jordán, en el valle frente a Betfegor, en el país de Sehón, rey de los amorreos, que habitaba en Hesbón y a quien derrotaron Moisés y los hijos de Israel al salir estos de Egipto.

over the Jordan in the valley over against Beth-peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, —whom Moses and the sons of Israel smote, when they came forth out of Egypt:

47 Pues se posesionaron de su tierra y de la tierra de Og, rey de Basan, dos reyes de los amorreos, que habitaban al otro lado del Jordán, al oriente,

so they took possession of his land, and the land of Og king of Bashan the two kings of the Amorites, who were over the Jordan, —towards the rising of the sun;

48 desde Aroer, situada en la orilla del río Arnón, hasta el monte Sión, que es el Hermón,

from Aroer which is on the edge of the ravine of Arnon, even unto Mount Sion, the same, is Hermon;

49 con todo el Arabá, de la otra parte del Jordán, al oriente, hasta el Mar del Arabá, al pie de las faldas del Fasga.

and all the waste plain over the Jordan, towards sunrise, even unto the sea of the waste plain, —under the slopes of the Pisgah.
