1 A Jov odgovori i reèe:
Then Job answered and said,
2 Još je tužnjava moja odmet? a nevolja je moja teža od uzdaha mojih.
Yea, I know that pleading is out of my reach; and his hand has been made heavy upon my groaning.
3 O kad bih znao kako bih našao Boga! da otidem do prijestola njegova,
Who would then know that I might find him, and come to an end [of the matter]?
4 Da razložim pred njim parbu svoju, i usta svoja napunim razloga,
And I would plead my own cause, and he would fill my mouth with arguments.
5 Da znam šta bi mi odgovorio, i razumijem šta bi mi rekao.
And I would know the remedies which he would speak to me, and I would perceive what he would tell me.
6 Bi li se prema velikoj sili svojoj preo sa mnom? Ne; nego bi mi pomogao.
Though he should come on me in [his] great strength, then he would not threaten me;
7 Ondje bi se pravedan èovjek mogao pravdati s njim, i oslobodio bih se zasvagda od svoga sudije.
for truth and reproof are from him; and he would bring forth my judgment to an end.
8 Gle, ako poðem naprijed, nema ga; ako li natrag, ne nahodim ga;
For if I shall go first, and exist no longer, still what do I know [concerning] the latter end?
9 Ako nalijevo radi, ne vidim ga; ako nadesno, zaklonio se, ne mogu ga vidjeti.
When he wrought on the left hand, then I observed [it] not: his right hand shall encompass me but I shall not see [it].
10 Ali on zna put moj; kad me okuša, izaæi æu kao zlato.
For he knows already my way; and he has tried me as gold.
11 Po stopama je njegovijem stupala noga moja; puta njegova držao sam se, i ne zaðoh.
And I will go forth according to his commandments, for I have kept his ways; and I shall not turn aside from his commandments,
12 Od zapovijesti usta njegovijeh nijesam otstupao; èuvao sam rijeèi usta njegovijeh više nego svoj užitak.
neither shall I transgress; but I have hid his words in my bosom.
13 Ali kad on što naumi, ko æe ga odvratiti? što duša njegova zaželi, ono èini.
And if too he has thus judged, who is he that has contradicted, for he has both willed [a thing] and done it.
14 I izvršiæe što je naumio za me; i toga ima u njega mnogo.
15 Zato sam se uplašio od njega; i kad to mislim, strah me je od njega.
Therefore am I troubled at him; and when I was reproved, I thought of him. Therefore let me take good heed before him: I will consider, and be afraid of him.
16 Bog je rastopio srce moje, svemoguæi me je uplašio.
But the Lord has softened my heart, and the Almighty has troubled me.
17 Što ne pogiboh prije mraka? i što ne sakri mrak ispred mene?
For I knew not that darkness would come upon me, and thick darkness has covered [me] before my face.
