1 apara ncha kiNvashUnyapUpotsavasya kAla upasthite
Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.
2 pradhAnayAjakA adhyAyakAshcha yathA taM hantuM shaknuvanti tathopAyAm acheShTanta kintu lokebhyo bibhyuH|
The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people.
3 etastin samaye dvAdashashiShyeShu gaNita IShkariyotIyarUDhimAn yo yihUdAstasyAntaHkaraNaM shaitAnAshritatvAt
Satan entered into Judah, who was also called Iscariot, who was counted with the twelve.
4 sa gatvA yathA yIshuM teShAM kareShu samarpayituM shaknoti tathA mantraNAM pradhAnayAjakaiH senApatibhishcha saha chakAra|
He went away and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them.
5 tena te tuShTAstasmai mudrAM dAtuM paNaM chakruH|
They were glad, and agreed to give him money.
6 tataH so NgIkR^itya yathA lokAnAmagochare taM parakareShu samarpayituM shaknoti tathAvakAshaM cheShTitumArebhe|
He consented and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.
7 atha kiNvashUnyapUpotmavadine, arthAt yasmin dine nistArotsavasya meSho hantavyastasmin dine
The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover must be sacrificed.
8 yIshuH pitaraM yohana nchAhUya jagAda, yuvAM gatvAsmAkaM bhojanArthaM nistArotsavasya dravyANyAsAdayataM|
Yeshua sent Peter and Yochanan, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”
9 tadA tau paprachChatuH kuchAsAdayAvo bhavataH kechChA?
They said to him, “Where do you want us to prepare?”
10 tadA sovAdIt, nagare praviShTe kashchijjalakumbhamAdAya yuvAM sAkShAt kariShyati sa yanniveshanaM pravishati yuvAmapi tanniveshanaM tatpashchAditvA niveshanapatim iti vAkyaM vadataM,
He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.
11 yatrAhaM nistArotsavasya bhojyaM shiShyaiH sArddhaM bhoktuM shaknomi sAtithishAlA kutra? kathAmimAM prabhustvAM pR^ichChati|
Tell the master of the house, ‘The Rabbi says to you, “Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?”’
12 tataH sa jano dvitIyaprakoShThIyam ekaM shastaM koShThaM darshayiShyati tatra bhojyamAsAdayataM|
He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there.”
13 tatastau gatvA tadvAkyAnusAreNa sarvvaM dR^iShdvA tatra nistArotsavIyaM bhojyamAsAdayAmAsatuH|
They went, found things as Yeshua had told them, and they prepared the Passover.
14 atha kAla upasthite yIshu rdvAdashabhiH preritaiH saha bhoktumupavishya kathitavAn
When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve emissaries.
15 mama duHkhabhogAt pUrvvaM yubhAbhiH saha nistArotsavasyaitasya bhojyaM bhoktuM mayAtivA nChA kR^itA|
He said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,
16 yuShmAn vadAmi, yAvatkAlam IshvararAjye bhojanaM na kariShye tAvatkAlam idaM na bhokShye|
for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in God’s Kingdom.”
17 tadA sa pAnapAtramAdAya Ishvarasya guNAn kIrttayitvA tebhyo datvAvadat, idaM gR^ihlIta yUyaM vibhajya pivata|
He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, “Take this and share it amongst yourselves,
18 yuShmAn vadAmi yAvatkAlam IshvararAjatvasya saMsthApanaM na bhavati tAvad drAkShAphalarasaM na pAsyAmi|
for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until God’s Kingdom comes.”
19 tataH pUpaM gR^ihItvA IshvaraguNAn kIrttayitvA bha NktA tebhyo datvAvadat, yuShmadarthaM samarpitaM yanmama vapustadidaM, etat karmma mama smaraNArthaM kurudhvaM|
He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me.”
20 atha bhojanAnte tAdR^ishaM pAtraM gR^ihItvAvadat, yuShmatkR^ite pAtitaM yanmama raktaM tena nirNItanavaniyamarUpaM pAnapAtramidaM|
Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.
21 pashyata yo mAM parakareShu samarpayiShyati sa mayA saha bhojanAsana upavishati|
But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.
22 yathA nirUpitamAste tadanusAreNA manuShyaputrasya gati rbhaviShyati kintu yastaM parakareShu samarpayiShyati tasya santApo bhaviShyati|
The Son of Man indeed goes as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!”
23 tadA teShAM ko jana etat karmma kariShyati tat te parasparaM praShTumArebhire|
They began to question amongst themselves which of them it was who would do this thing.
24 aparaM teShAM ko janaH shreShThatvena gaNayiShyate, atrArthe teShAM vivAdobhavat|
A dispute also arose amongst them, which of them was considered to be greatest.
25 asmAt kAraNAt sovadat, anyadeshIyAnAM rAjAnaH prajAnAmupari prabhutvaM kurvvanti dAruNashAsanaM kR^itvApi te bhUpatitvena vikhyAtA bhavanti cha|
He said to them, “The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’
26 kintu yuShmAkaM tathA na bhaviShyati, yo yuShmAkaM shreShTho bhaviShyati sa kaniShThavad bhavatu, yashcha mukhyo bhaviShyati sa sevakavadbhavatu|
But not so with you. Rather, the one who is greater amongst you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.
27 bhojanopaviShTaparichArakayoH kaH shreShThaH? yo bhojanAyopavishati sa kiM shreShTho na bhavati? kintu yuShmAkaM madhye. ahaM parichArakaivAsmi|
For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn’t it he who sits at the table? But I am amongst you as one who serves.
28 apara ncha yuyaM mama parIkShAkAle prathamamArabhya mayA saha sthitA
“But you are those who have continued with me in my trials.
29 etatkAraNAt pitrA yathA madarthaM rAjyamekaM nirUpitaM tathAhamapi yuShmadarthaM rAjyaM nirUpayAmi|
I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me,
30 tasmAn mama rAjye bhojanAsane cha bhojanapAne kariShyadhve siMhAsaneShUpavishya chesrAyelIyAnAM dvAdashavaMshAnAM vichAraM kariShyadhve|
that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”
31 aparaM prabhuruvAcha, he shimon pashya titaunA dhAnyAnIva yuShmAn shaitAn chAlayitum aichChat,
The Lord said, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have all of you, that he might sift you as wheat,
32 kintu tava vishvAsasya lopo yathA na bhavati etat tvadarthaM prArthitaM mayA, tvanmanasi parivarttite cha bhrAtR^iNAM manAMsi sthirIkuru|
but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn’t fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers.”
33 tadA sovadat, he prabhohaM tvayA sArddhaM kArAM mR^iti ncha yAtuM majjitosmi|
He said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!”
34 tataH sa uvAcha, he pitara tvAM vadAmi, adya kukkuTaravAt pUrvvaM tvaM matparichayaM vAratrayam apahvoShyase|
He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times.”
35 aparaM sa paprachCha, yadA mudrAsampuTaM khAdyapAtraM pAdukA ncha vinA yuShmAn prAhiNavaM tadA yuShmAkaM kasyApi nyUnatAsIt? te prochuH kasyApi na|
He said to them, “When I sent you out without purse, bag, and sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.”
36 tadA sovadat kintvidAnIM mudrAsampuTaM khAdyapAtraM vA yasyAsti tena tadgrahItavyaM, yasya cha kR^ipANo nAsti tena svavastraM vikrIya sa kretavyaH|
Then he said to them, “But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a bag. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.
37 yato yuShmAnahaM vadAmi, aparAdhijanaiH sArddhaM gaNitaH sa bhaviShyati| idaM yachChAstrIyaM vachanaM likhitamasti tanmayi phaliShyati yato mama sambandhIyaM sarvvaM setsyati|
For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: ‘He was counted with transgressors.’ For that which concerns me is being fulfilled.”
38 tadA te prochuH prabho pashya imau kR^ipANau| tataH sovadad etau yatheShTau|
They said, “Lord, behold, here are two swords.” He said to them, “That is enough.”
39 atha sa tasmAdvahi rgatvA svAchArAnusAreNa jaitunanAmAdriM jagAma shiShyAshcha tatpashchAd yayuH|
He came out and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.
40 tatropasthAya sa tAnuvAcha, yathA parIkShAyAM na patatha tadarthaM prArthayadhvaM|
When he was at the place, he said to them, “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.”
41 pashchAt sa tasmAd ekasharakShepAd bahi rgatvA jAnunI pAtayitvA etat prArthayA nchakre,
He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and he knelt down and prayed,
42 he pita ryadi bhavAn sammanyate tarhi kaMsamenaM mamAntikAd dUraya kintu madichChAnurUpaM na tvadichChAnurUpaM bhavatu|
saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”
43 tadA tasmai shaktiM dAtuM svargIyadUto darshanaM dadau|
An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.
44 pashchAt sotyantaM yAtanayA vyAkulo bhUtvA punardR^iDhaM prArthayA nchakre, tasmAd bR^ihachChoNitabindava iva tasya svedabindavaH pR^ithivyAM patitumArebhire|
Being in agony, he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.
45 atha prArthanAta utthAya shiShyANAM samIpametya tAn manoduHkhino nidritAn dR^iShTvAvadat
When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping because of grief,
46 kuto nidrAtha? parIkShAyAm apatanArthaM prarthayadhvaM|
and said to them, “Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation.”
47 etatkathAyAH kathanakAle dvAdashashiShyANAM madhye gaNito yihUdAnAmA janatAsahitasteShAm agre chalitvA yIshoshchumbanArthaM tadantikam Ayayau|
While he was still speaking, a crowd appeared. He who was called Judah, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Yeshua to kiss him.
48 tadA yIshuruvAcha, he yihUdA kiM chumbanena manuShyaputraM parakareShu samarpayasi?
But Yeshua said to him, “Judah, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 tadA yadyad ghaTiShyate tadanumAya sa NgibhiruktaM, he prabho vayaM ki kha Ngena ghAtayiShyAmaH?
When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?”
50 tata ekaH karavAlenAhatya pradhAnayAjakasya dAsasya dakShiNaM karNaM chichCheda|
A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
51 adhUnA nivarttasva ityuktvA yIshustasya shrutiM spR^iShTvA svasyaM chakAra|
But Yeshua answered, “Let me at least do this”—and he touched his ear and healed him.
52 pashchAd yIshuH samIpasthAn pradhAnayAjakAn mandirasya senApatIn prAchInAMshcha jagAda, yUyaM kR^ipANAn yaShTIMshcha gR^ihItvA mAM kiM choraM dharttumAyAtAH?
Yeshua said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?
53 yadAhaM yuShmAbhiH saha pratidinaM mandire. atiShThaM tadA mAM dharttaM na pravR^ittAH, kintvidAnIM yuShmAkaM samayondhakArasya chAdhipatyamasti|
When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn’t stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness.”
54 atha te taM dhR^itvA mahAyAjakasya niveshanaM ninyuH| tataH pitaro dUre dUre pashchAditvA
They seized him and led him away, and brought him into the high priest’s house. But Peter followed from a distance.
55 bR^ihatkoShThasya madhye yatrAgniM jvAlayitvA lokAH sametyopaviShTAstatra taiH sArddham upavivesha|
When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat amongst them.
56 atha vahnisannidhau samupaveshakAle kAchiddAsI mano nivishya taM nirIkShyAvadat pumAnayaM tasya sa Nge. asthAt|
A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, “This man also was with him.”
57 kintu sa tad apahnutyAvAdIt he nAri tamahaM na parichinomi|
He denied Yeshua, saying, “Woman, I don’t know him.”
58 kShaNAntare. anyajanastaM dR^iShTvAbravIt tvamapi teShAM nikarasyaikajanosi| pitaraH pratyuvAcha he nara nAhamasmi|
After a little while someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them!” But Peter answered, “Man, I am not!”
59 tataH sArddhadaNDadvayAt paraM punaranyo jano nishchitya babhAShe, eSha tasya sa NgIti satyaM yatoyaM gAlIlIyo lokaH|
After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!”
60 tadA pitara uvAcha he nara tvaM yad vadami tadahaM boddhuM na shaknomi, iti vAkye kathitamAtre kukkuTo rurAva|
But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you are talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.
61 tadA prabhuNA vyAdhuTya pitare nirIkShite kR^ikavAkuravAt pUrvvaM mAM trirapahnoShyase iti pUrvvoktaM tasya vAkyaM pitaraH smR^itvA
The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord’s word, how he said to him, “Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times.”
62 bahirgatvA mahAkhedena chakranda|
He went out, and wept bitterly.
63 tadA yai ryIshurdhR^itaste tamupahasya praharttumArebhire|
The men who held Yeshua mocked him and beat him.
64 vastreNa tasya dR^ishau baddhvA kapole chapeTAghAtaM kR^itvA paprachChuH, kaste kapole chapeTAghAtaM kR^itavAna? gaNayitvA tad vada|
Having blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?”
65 tadanyat tadviruddhaM bahunindAvAkyaM vaktumArebhire|
They spoke many other things against him, insulting him.
66 atha prabhAte sati lokaprA nchaH pradhAnayAjakA adhyApakAshcha sabhAM kR^itvA madhyesabhaM yIshumAnIya paprachChuH, tvam abhiShikatosi na vAsmAn vada|
As soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people were gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying,
67 sa pratyuvAcha, mayA tasminnukte. api yUyaM na vishvasiShyatha|
“If you are the Messiah, tell us.” But he said to them, “If I tell you, you won’t believe,
68 kasmiMshchidvAkye yuShmAn pR^iShTe. api mAM na taduttaraM vakShyatha na mAM tyakShyatha cha|
and if I ask, you will in no way answer me or let me go.
69 kintvitaH paraM manujasutaH sarvvashaktimata Ishvarasya dakShiNe pArshve samupavekShyati|
From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”
70 tataste paprachChuH, rtiha tvamIshvarasya putraH? sa kathayAmAsa, yUyaM yathArthaM vadatha sa evAhaM|
They all said, “Are you then the Son of God?” He said to them, “You say it, because I am.”
71 tadA te sarvve kathayAmAsuH, rtiha sAkShye. ansasmin asmAkaM kiM prayojanaM? asya svamukhAdeva sAkShyaM prAptam|
They said, “Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth!”
