1 atha saptāhaprathamadinē'tipratyūṣē tā yōṣitaḥ sampāditaṁ sugandhidravyaṁ gr̥hītvā tadanyābhiḥ kiyatībhiḥ strībhiḥ saha śmaśānaṁ yayuḥ|
But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, bringing the spices which they had prepared.
2 kintu śmaśānadvārāt pāṣāṇamapasāritaṁ dr̥ṣṭvā
They found the stone rolled away from the tomb.
3 tāḥ praviśya prabhō rdēhamaprāpya
They entered in, and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.
4 vyākulā bhavanti ētarhi tējōmayavastrānvitau dvau puruṣau tāsāṁ samīpē samupasthitau
It happened, while they were greatly perplexed about this, look, two men stood by them in dazzling clothing.
5 tasmāttāḥ śaṅkāyuktā bhūmāvadhōmukhyasyasthuḥ| tadā tau tā ūcatu rmr̥tānāṁ madhyē jīvantaṁ kutō mr̥gayatha?
Becoming terrified, they bowed their faces down to the earth. They said to them, "Why do you seek the living among the dead?
6 sōtra nāsti sa udasthāt|
He is not here, but is risen. Remember what he told you when he was still in Galilee,
7 pāpināṁ karēṣu samarpitēna kruśē hatēna ca manuṣyaputrēṇa tr̥tīyadivasē śmaśānādutthātavyam iti kathāṁ sa galīli tiṣṭhan yuṣmabhyaṁ kathitavān tāṁ smarata|
saying that the Son of Man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again?"
8 tadā tasya sā kathā tāsāṁ manaḥsu jātā|
Then they remembered his words.
9 anantaraṁ śmaśānād gatvā tā ēkādaśaśiṣyādibhyaḥ sarvvēbhyastāṁ vārttāṁ kathayāmāsuḥ|
And returning from the tomb, they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest.
10 magdalīnīmariyam, yōhanā, yākūbō mātā mariyam tadanyāḥ saṅginyō yōṣitaśca prēritēbhya ētāḥ sarvvā vārttāḥ kathayāmāsuḥ
Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles.
11 kintu tāsāṁ kathām anarthakākhyānamātraṁ buddhvā kōpi na pratyait|
These words seemed to them to be nonsense, and they did not believe them.
12 tadā pitara utthāya śmaśānāntikaṁ dadhāva, tatra ca prahvō bhūtvā pārśvaikasthāpitaṁ kēvalaṁ vastraṁ dadarśa; tasmādāścaryyaṁ manyamānō yadaghaṭata tanmanasi vicārayan pratasthē|
But Peter got up and ran to the tomb. Stooping and looking in, he saw the strips of linen by themselves, and he departed to his home, wondering what had happened.
13 tasminnēva dinē dvau śiyyau yirūśālamaścatuṣkrōśāntaritam immāyugrāmaṁ gacchantau
And look, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.
14 tāsāṁ ghaṭanānāṁ kathāmakathayatāṁ
They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.
15 tayōrālāpavicārayōḥ kālē yīśurāgatya tābhyāṁ saha jagāma
It happened, while they talked and questioned together, that Jesus himself came near, and went with them.
16 kintu yathā tau taṁ na paricinutastadarthaṁ tayō rdr̥ṣṭiḥ saṁruddhā|
But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.
17 sa tau pr̥ṣṭavān yuvāṁ viṣaṇṇau kiṁ vicārayantau gacchathaḥ?
And he said to them, "What are these words that you are exchanging with each other as you walk?" And they stood still, looking sad.
18 tatastayōḥ kliyapānāmā pratyuvāca yirūśālamapurē'dhunā yānyaghaṭanta tvaṁ kēvalavidēśī kiṁ tadvr̥ttāntaṁ na jānāsi?
One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things which have happened there in these days?"
19 sa papraccha kā ghaṭanāḥ? tadā tau vaktumārēbhātē yīśunāmā yō nāsaratīyō bhaviṣyadvādī īśvarasya mānuṣāṇāñca sākṣāt vākyē karmmaṇi ca śaktimānāsīt
He said to them, "What things?" They said to him, "The things concerning Jesus, the Nazarene, a man who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;
20 tam asmākaṁ pradhānayājakā vicārakāśca kēnāpi prakārēṇa kruśē viddhvā tasya prāṇānanāśayan tadīyā ghaṭanāḥ;
and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.
21 kintu ya isrāyēlīyalōkān uddhārayiṣyati sa ēvāyam ityāśāsmābhiḥ kr̥tā|tadyathā tathāstu tasyā ghaṭanāyā adya dinatrayaṁ gataṁ|
But we were hoping that it was he who would redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things happened.
22 adhikantvasmākaṁ saṅginīnāṁ kiyatstrīṇāṁ mukhēbhyō'sambhavavākyamidaṁ śrutaṁ;
Also, certain women of our company amazed us, having arrived early at the tomb;
23 tāḥ pratyūṣē śmaśānaṁ gatvā tatra tasya dēham aprāpya vyāghuṭyētvā prōktavatyaḥ svargīsadūtau dr̥ṣṭāvasmābhistau cāvādiṣṭāṁ sa jīvitavān|
and when they did not find his body, they came saying that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.
24 tatōsmākaṁ kaiścit śmaśānamagamyata tē'pi strīṇāṁ vākyānurūpaṁ dr̥ṣṭavantaḥ kintu taṁ nāpaśyan|
Some of us went to the tomb, and found it just like the women had said, but they did not see him."
25 tadā sa tāvuvāca, hē abōdhau hē bhaviṣyadvādibhiruktavākyaṁ pratyētuṁ vilambamānau;
Then he said to them, "O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken.
26 ētatsarvvaduḥkhaṁ bhuktvā svabhūtiprāptiḥ kiṁ khrīṣṭasya na nyāyyā?
Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and to enter into his glory?"
27 tataḥ sa mūsāgranthamārabhya sarvvabhaviṣyadvādināṁ sarvvaśāstrē svasmin likhitākhyānābhiprāyaṁ bōdhayāmāsa|
Beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he explained to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
28 atha gamyagrāmābhyarṇaṁ prāpya tēnāgrē gamanalakṣaṇē darśitē
They drew near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.
29 tau sādhayitvāvadatāṁ sahāvābhyāṁ tiṣṭha dinē gatē sati rātrirabhūt; tataḥ sa tābhyāṁ sārddhaṁ sthātuṁ gr̥haṁ yayau|
They urged him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over." He went in to stay with them.
30 paścādbhōjanōpavēśakālē sa pūpaṁ gr̥hītvā īśvaraguṇān jagāda tañca bhaṁktvā tābhyāṁ dadau|
It happened, that when he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave to them.
31 tadā tayō rdr̥ṣṭau prasannāyāṁ taṁ pratyabhijñatuḥ kintu sa tayōḥ sākṣādantardadhē|
Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished out of their sight.
32 tatastau mithōbhidhātum ārabdhavantau gamanakālē yadā kathāmakathayat śāstrārthañcabōdhayat tadāvayō rbuddhiḥ kiṁ na prājvalat?
And they said to one another, "Weren't our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?"
33 tau tatkṣaṇādutthāya yirūśālamapuraṁ pratyāyayatuḥ, tatsthānē śiṣyāṇām ēkādaśānāṁ saṅgināñca darśanaṁ jātaṁ|
They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,
34 tē prōcuḥ prabhurudatiṣṭhad iti satyaṁ śimōnē darśanamadācca|
saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon."
35 tataḥ pathaḥ sarvvaghaṭanāyāḥ pūpabhañjanēna tatparicayasya ca sarvvavr̥ttāntaṁ tau vaktumārēbhātē|
They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
36 itthaṁ tē parasparaṁ vadanti tatkālē yīśuḥ svayaṁ tēṣāṁ madhya prōtthaya yuṣmākaṁ kalyāṇaṁ bhūyād ityuvāca,
As they said these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, "Peace be to you."
37 kintu bhūtaṁ paśyāma ityanumāya tē samudvivijirē trēṣuśca|
But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.
38 sa uvāca, kutō duḥkhitā bhavatha? yuṣmākaṁ manaḥsu sandēha udēti ca kutaḥ?
He said to them, "Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?
39 ēṣōhaṁ, mama karau paśyata varaṁ spr̥ṣṭvā paśyata, mama yādr̥śāni paśyatha tādr̥śāni bhūtasya māṁsāsthīni na santi|
See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones, as you see that I have."
40 ityuktvā sa hastapādān darśayāmāsa|
When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.
41 tē'sambhavaṁ jñātvā sānandā na pratyayan| tataḥ sa tān papraccha, atra yuṣmākaṁ samīpē khādyaṁ kiñcidasti?
While they still did not believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"
42 tatastē kiyaddagdhamatsyaṁ madhu ca daduḥ
And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish.
43 sa tadādāya tēṣāṁ sākṣād bubhujē
And he took it and ate in front of them.
44 kathayāmāsa ca mūsāvyavasthāyāṁ bhaviṣyadvādināṁ granthēṣu gītapustakē ca mayi yāni sarvvāṇi vacanāni likhitāni tadanurūpāṇi ghaṭiṣyantē yuṣmābhiḥ sārddhaṁ sthitvāhaṁ yadētadvākyam avadaṁ tadidānīṁ pratyakṣamabhūt|
And he said to them, "This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the Law of Moses, the Prophets, and the Psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled."
45 atha tēbhyaḥ śāstrabōdhādhikāraṁ datvāvadat,
Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures.
46 khrīṣṭēnētthaṁ mr̥tiyātanā bhōktavyā tr̥tīyadinē ca śmaśānādutthātavyañcēti lipirasti;
He said to them, "Thus it is written, for the Messiah to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,
47 tannāmnā yirūśālamamārabhya sarvvadēśē manaḥparāvarttanasya pāpamōcanasya ca susaṁvādaḥ pracārayitavyaḥ,
and that repentance leading to forgiveness of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48 ēṣu sarvvēṣu yūyaṁ sākṣiṇaḥ|
You are witnesses of these things.
49 aparañca paśyata pitrā yat pratijñātaṁ tat prēṣayiṣyāmi, ataēva yāvatkālaṁ yūyaṁ svargīyāṁ śaktiṁ na prāpsyatha tāvatkālaṁ yirūśālamnagarē tiṣṭhata|
And look, I send forth the promise of my Father on you. But wait in the city until you are clothed with power from on high."
50 atha sa tān baithanīyāparyyantaṁ nītvā hastāvuttōlya āśiṣa vaktumārēbhē
He led them out as far as Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
51 āśiṣaṁ vadannēva ca tēbhyaḥ pr̥thag bhūtvā svargāya nītō'bhavat|
It happened, while he blessed them, that he departed from them, and was carried up into heaven.
52 tadā tē taṁ bhajamānā mahānandēna yirūśālamaṁ pratyājagmuḥ|
They worshiped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy,
53 tatō nirantaraṁ mandirē tiṣṭhanta īśvarasya praśaṁsāṁ dhanyavādañca karttam ārēbhirē| iti||
and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God.
