< lūkaḥ 6 >

1 acarañca parvvaṇo dvitīyadināt paraṁ prathamaviśrāmavāre śasyakṣetreṇa yīśorgamanakāle tasya śiṣyāḥ kaṇiśaṁ chittvā kareṣu marddayitvā khāditumārebhire|
Now it came to pass for him to be going through the grain fields on a particular sabbath, and his disciples were plucking the ears and were eating, rubbing them in their hands.
2 tasmāt kiyantaḥ phirūśinastānavadan viśrāmavāre yat karmma na karttavyaṁ tat kutaḥ kurutha?
But some of the Pharisees said to them, Why do ye what is not permitted to do on the sabbath day?
3 yīśuḥ pratyuvāca dāyūd tasya saṅginaśca kṣudhārttāḥ kiṁ cakruḥ sa katham īśvarasya mandiraṁ praviśya
And having answered them, Jesus said, Have ye not read even this, what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him,
4 ye darśanīyāḥ pūpā yājakān vinānyasya kasyāpyabhojanīyāstānānīya svayaṁ bubhaje saṅgibhyopi dadau tat kiṁ yuṣmābhiḥ kadāpi nāpāṭhi?
how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the loaves of the presentation, and also gave to those who were with him, which is not permitted to eat, except the priests alone?
5 paścāt sa tānavadat manujasuto viśrāmavārasyāpi prabhu rbhavati|
And he said to them, The Son of man is lord also of the sabbath.
6 anantaram anyaviśrāmavāre sa bhajanagehaṁ praviśya samupadiśati| tadā tatsthāne śuṣkadakṣiṇakara ekaḥ pumān upatasthivān|
And it also came to pass on another sabbath for him to enter into the synagogue and teach. And a man was there, and his right hand was withered.
7 tasmād adhyāpakāḥ phirūśinaśca tasmin doṣamāropayituṁ sa viśrāmavāre tasya svāsthyaṁ karoti naveti pratīkṣitumārebhire|
And the scholars and the Pharisees watched if he would heal on the sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him.
8 tadā yīśusteṣāṁ cintāṁ viditvā taṁ śuṣkakaraṁ pumāṁsaṁ provāca, tvamutthāya madhyasthāne tiṣṭha|
But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And having risen, he stood up.
9 tasmāt tasmin utthitavati yīśustān vyājahāra, yuṣmān imāṁ kathāṁ pṛcchāmi, viśrāmavāre hitam ahitaṁ vā, prāṇarakṣaṇaṁ prāṇanāśanaṁ vā, eteṣāṁ kiṁ karmmakaraṇīyam?
Then Jesus said to them, I will question you. What? Is it permitted on the sabbath to do good, or to do harm, to save life, or to kill?
10 paścāt caturdikṣu sarvvān vilokya taṁ mānavaṁ babhāṣe, nijakaraṁ prasāraya; tatastena tathā kṛta itarakaravat tasya hastaḥ svasthobhavat|
And having looked around on them all, he said to him, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did, and his hand was restored whole as the other.
11 tasmāt te pracaṇḍakopānvitā yīśuṁ kiṁ kariṣyantīti parasparaṁ pramantritāḥ|
But they were filled with fury, and deliberated with each other what they might do to Jesus.
12 tataḥ paraṁ sa parvvatamāruhyeśvaramuddiśya prārthayamānaḥ kṛtsnāṁ rātriṁ yāpitavān|
And he happened in these days to go out onto the mountain to pray, and he was continuing all night in prayer to God.
13 atha dine sati sa sarvvān śiṣyān āhūtavān teṣāṁ madhye
And when it became day, he called his disciples, and chose twelve from them, whom he also named apostles:
14 pitaranāmnā khyātaḥ śimon tasya bhrātā āndriyaśca yākūb yohan ca philip barthalamayaśca
Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
15 mathiḥ thomā ālphīyasya putro yākūb jvalantanāmnā khyātaḥ śimon
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,
16 ca yākūbo bhrātā yihūdāśca taṁ yaḥ parakareṣu samarpayiṣyati sa īṣkarīyotīyayihūdāścaitān dvādaśa janān manonītān kṛtvā sa jagrāha tathā prerita iti teṣāṁ nāma cakāra|
Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.
17 tataḥ paraṁ sa taiḥ saha parvvatādavaruhya upatyakāyāṁ tasthau tatastasya śiṣyasaṅgho yihūdādeśād yirūśālamaśca soraḥ sīdonaśca jaladhe rodhaso jananihāśca etya tasya kathāśravaṇārthaṁ rogamuktyarthañca tasya samīpe tasthuḥ|
And having come down with them, he stood on a level place. And a company of his disciples, and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the maritime Tyre and Sidon, were those who came to hear him, and to be healed from their diseases,
18 amedhyabhūtagrastāśca tannikaṭamāgatya svāsthyaṁ prāpuḥ|
also those who were afflicted with unclean spirits. And they were healed.
19 sarvveṣāṁ svāsthyakaraṇaprabhāvasya prakāśitatvāt sarvve lokā etya taṁ spraṣṭuṁ yetire|
And all the multitude sought to touch him, because power came forth from him, and healed them all.
20 paścāt sa śiṣyān prati dṛṣṭiṁ kutvā jagāda, he daridrā yūyaṁ dhanyā yata īśvarīye rājye vo'dhikārosti|
And having lifted up his eyes on his disciples, he said, Blessed are the poor, because the kingdom of God is what belongs to you.
21 he adhunā kṣudhitalokā yūyaṁ dhanyā yato yūyaṁ tarpsyatha; he iha rodino janā yūyaṁ dhanyā yato yūyaṁ hasiṣyatha|
Blessed are those who hunger now, because ye will be filled. Blessed are those who weep now, because ye will laugh.
22 yadā lokā manuṣyasūno rnāmaheto ryuṣmān ṛtīyiṣyante pṛthak kṛtvā nindiṣyanti, adhamāniva yuṣmān svasamīpād dūrīkariṣyanti ca tadā yūyaṁ dhanyāḥ|
Blessed are ye, when men will hate you, and when they will exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, because of the Son of man.
23 svarge yuṣmākaṁ yatheṣṭaṁ phalaṁ bhaviṣyati, etadarthaṁ tasmin dine prollasata ānandena nṛtyata ca, teṣāṁ pūrvvapuruṣāśca bhaviṣyadvādinaḥ prati tathaiva vyavāharan|
Rejoice ye in that day, and leap, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did in the same way to the prophets.
24 kintu hā hā dhanavanto yūyaṁ sukhaṁ prāpnuta| hanta paritṛptā yūyaṁ kṣudhitā bhaviṣyatha;
However, woe to you the rich, because ye have received your consolation.
25 iha hasanto yūyaṁ vata yuṣmābhiḥ śocitavyaṁ roditavyañca|
Woe to you who are filled now, because ye will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, because ye will mourn and weep.
26 sarvvailākai ryuṣmākaṁ sukhyātau kṛtāyāṁ yuṣmākaṁ durgati rbhaviṣyati yuṣmākaṁ pūrvvapuruṣā mṛṣābhaviṣyadvādinaḥ prati tadvat kṛtavantaḥ|
Woe when men will speak well of you, for their fathers did in the same way to the false prophets.
27 he śrotāro yuṣmabhyamahaṁ kathayāmi, yūyaṁ śatruṣu prīyadhvaṁ ye ca yuṣmān dviṣanti teṣāmapi hitaṁ kuruta|
But I say to you, to those who hear, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.
28 ye ca yuṣmān śapanti tebhya āśiṣaṁ datta ye ca yuṣmān avamanyante teṣāṁ maṅgalaṁ prārthayadhvaṁ|
Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who mistreat you.
29 yadi kaścit tava kapole capeṭāghātaṁ karoti tarhi taṁ prati kapolam anyaṁ parāvarttya sammukhīkuru punaśca yadi kaścit tava gātrīyavastraṁ harati tarhi taṁ paridheyavastram api grahītuṁ mā vāraya|
To him who strikes thee on the cheek offer the other also, and from him who takes away thy cloak, also do not withhold thy coat.
30 yastvāṁ yācate tasmai dehi, yaśca tava sampattiṁ harati taṁ mā yācasva|
Give to every man who asks thee, and from him who takes away thy personal things do not demand them back.
31 parebhyaḥ svān prati yathācaraṇam apekṣadhve parān prati yūyamapi tathācarata|
And as ye desire that men would do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
32 ye janā yuṣmāsu prīyante kevalaṁ teṣu prīyamāṇeṣu yuṣmākaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ? pāpilokā api sveṣu prīyamāṇeṣu prīyante|
And if ye love those who love you, what credit is for you? For even sinners love those who love them.
33 yadi hitakāriṇa eva hitaṁ kurutha tarhi yuṣmākaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ? pāpilokā api tathā kurvvanti|
And if ye do good to those who do good to you, what credit is for you? For even sinners do the same.
34 yebhya ṛṇapariśodhasya prāptipratyāśāste kevalaṁ teṣu ṛṇe samarpite yuṣmākaṁ kiṁ phalaṁ? punaḥ prāptyāśayā pāpīlokā api pāpijaneṣu ṛṇam arpayanti|
And if ye lend to whom ye hope to receive, what credit is for you? For even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35 ato yūyaṁ ripuṣvapi prīyadhvaṁ, parahitaṁ kuruta ca; punaḥ prāptyāśāṁ tyaktvā ṛṇamarpayata, tathā kṛte yuṣmākaṁ mahāphalaṁ bhaviṣyati, yūyañca sarvvapradhānasya santānā iti khyātiṁ prāpsyatha, yato yuṣmākaṁ pitā kṛtaghnānāṁ durvṭattānāñca hitamācarati|
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, despairing nothing, and your reward will be great. And ye will be sons of the Most High, because he is good toward the ungrateful and bad.
36 ata eva sa yathā dayālu ryūyamapi tādṛśā dayālavo bhavata|
Become ye therefore merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
37 aparañca parān doṣiṇo mā kuruta tasmād yūyaṁ doṣīkṛtā na bhaviṣyatha; adaṇḍyān mā daṇḍayata tasmād yūyamapi daṇḍaṁ na prāpsyatha; pareṣāṁ doṣān kṣamadhvaṁ tasmād yuṣmākamapi doṣāḥ kṣamiṣyante|
And do not criticize, and ye will, no, not be criticized. And do not condemn, and ye will, no, not be condemned. Forgive, and ye will be forgiven.
38 dānānidatta tasmād yūyaṁ dānāni prāpsyatha, varañca lokāḥ parimāṇapātraṁ pradalayya sañcālya proñcālya paripūryya yuṣmākaṁ kroḍeṣu samarpayiṣyanti; yūyaṁ yena parimāṇena parimātha tenaiva parimāṇena yuṣmatkṛte parimāsyate|
Give, and it will be given to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, they will give into your bosom. For with the same measure with which ye measure, it will be measured again to you.
39 atha sa tebhyo dṛṣṭāntakathāmakathayat, andho janaḥ kimandhaṁ panthānaṁ darśayituṁ śaknoti? tasmād ubhāvapi kiṁ gartte na patiṣyataḥ?
And he spoke a parable to them. Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a ditch?
40 guroḥ śiṣyo na śreṣṭhaḥ kintu śiṣye siddhe sati sa gurutulyo bhavituṁ śaknoti|
A disciple is not above his teacher, but every disciple who is fully developed will be as his teacher.
41 aparañca tvaṁ svacakṣuṣi nāsām adṛṣṭvā tava bhrātuścakṣuṣi yattṛṇamasti tadeva kutaḥ paśyami?
And why do thou see the speck in thy brother's eye, but do not perceive the beam in thine own eye?
42 svacakṣuṣi yā nāsā vidyate tām ajñātvā, bhrātastava netrāt tṛṇaṁ bahiḥ karomīti vākyaṁ bhrātaraṁ kathaṁ vaktuṁ śaknoṣi? he kapaṭin pūrvvaṁ svanayanāt nāsāṁ bahiḥ kuru tato bhrātuścakṣuṣastṛṇaṁ bahiḥ karttuṁ sudṛṣṭiṁ prāpsyasi|
Or how can thou say to thy brother, Brother, allow me to take out the speck that is in thine eye, when thou thyself do not see the beam in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first take out the beam from thine own eye, and then thou will see clearly to take out the speck in thy brother's eye.
43 anyañca uttamastaruḥ kadāpi phalamanuttamaṁ na phalati, anuttamataruśca phalamuttamaṁ na phalati kāraṇādataḥ phalaistaravo jñāyante|
For a good tree is not producing corrupt fruit, nor a corrupt tree producing good fruit.
44 kaṇṭakipādapāt kopi uḍumbaraphalāni na pātayati tathā śṛgālakolivṛkṣādapi kopi drākṣāphalaṁ na pātayati|
For each tree is known from its own fruit. For they do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they harvest grapes from a bramble bush.
45 tadvat sādhuloko'ntaḥkaraṇarūpāt subhāṇḍāgārād uttamāni dravyāṇi bahiḥ karoti, duṣṭo lokaścāntaḥkaraṇarūpāt kubhāṇḍāgārāt kutsitāni dravyāṇi nirgamayati yato'ntaḥkaraṇānāṁ pūrṇabhāvānurūpāṇi vacāṁsi mukhānnirgacchanti|
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth the good, and the bad man out of the bad treasure of his heart brings forth the bad, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
46 aparañca mamājñānurūpaṁ nācaritvā kuto māṁ prabho prabho iti vadatha?
And why do ye call me, Lord, Lord, and not do the things that I say?
47 yaḥ kaścin mama nikaṭam āgatya mama kathā niśamya tadanurūpaṁ karmma karoti sa kasya sadṛśo bhavati tadahaṁ yuṣmān jñāpayāmi|
Every man who comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like.
48 yo jano gabhīraṁ khanitvā pāṣāṇasthale bhittiṁ nirmmāya svagṛhaṁ racayati tena saha tasyopamā bhavati; yata āplāvijalametya tasya mūle vegena vahadapi tadgehaṁ lāḍayituṁ na śaknoti yatastasya bhittiḥ pāṣāṇopari tiṣṭhati|
He is like a man who builds a house, who dug and excavated, and laid a foundation upon the rock. And when a flood developed, the stream beat upon that house, and could not shake it, for it had been founded upon the rock.
49 kintu yaḥ kaścin mama kathāḥ śrutvā tadanurūpaṁ nācarati sa bhittiṁ vinā mṛdupari gṛhanirmmātrā samāno bhavati; yata āplāvijalamāgatya vegena yadā vahati tadā tadgṛhaṁ patati tasya mahat patanaṁ jāyate|
But he who heard, and not having done, is like a man who built a house upon the soil without a foundation, on which the stream beat, and straightaway it fell. And the ruin of that house became great.
