< 1 karinthinaḥ 12 >

1 he bhrātaraḥ, yūyaṁ yad ātmikān dāyān anavagatāstiṣṭhatha tadahaṁ nābhilaṣāmi|
Now concerning spiritual things, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.
2 pūrvvaṁ bhinnajātīyā yūyaṁ yadvad vinītāstadvad avākpratimānām anugāmina ādhbam iti jānītha|
You know that when you were unbelievers, you were led away to those mute idols, however you might be led.
Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by God's Spirit says, "Jesus is accursed." No one can say, "Jesus is Lord," but by the Holy Spirit.
4 dāyā bahuvidhāḥ kintveka ātmā
Now there are various kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit.
5 paricaryyāśca bahuvidhāḥ kintvekaḥ prabhuḥ|
There are various kinds of service, and the same Lord.
6 sādhanāni bahuvidhāni kintu sarvveṣu sarvvasādhaka īśvara ekaḥ|
There are various kinds of workings, but the same God, who works all things in all.
7 ekaikasmai tasyātmano darśanaṁ parahitārthaṁ dīyate|
But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the profit of all.
8 ekasmai tenātmanā jñānavākyaṁ dīyate, anyasmai tenaivātmanādiṣṭaṁ vidyāvākyam,
For to one is given through the Spirit the word of wisdom, and to another the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit;
9 anyasmai tenaivātmanā viśvāsaḥ, anyasmai tenaivātmanā svāsthyadānaśaktiḥ,
to another faith, by the same Spirit; and to another gifts of healings, by the one Spirit;
10 anyasmai duḥsādhyasādhanaśaktiranyasmai ceśvarīyādeśaḥ, anyasmai cātimānuṣikasyādeśasya vicārasāmarthyam, anyasmai parabhāṣābhāṣaṇaśaktiranyasmai ca bhāṣārthabhāṣaṇasāmaryaṁ dīyate|
and to another workings of miracles; and to another prophecy; and to another discernings of spirits; to another different kinds of tongues; and to another the interpretation of tongues.
11 ekenādvitīyenātmanā yathābhilāṣam ekaikasmai janāyaikaikaṁ dānaṁ vitaratā tāni sarvvāṇi sādhyante|
But the one and the same Spirit works all of these, distributing to each one separately as he desires.
12 deha ekaḥ sannapi yadvad bahvaṅgayukto bhavati, tasyaikasya vapuṣo 'ṅgānāṁ bahutvena yadvad ekaṁ vapu rbhavati, tadvat khrīṣṭaḥ|
For as the body is one, and has many members, and all the members of the body, being many, are one body; so also is Messiah.
13 yato heto ryihūdibhinnajātīyadāsasvatantrā vayaṁ sarvve majjanenaikenātmanaikadehīkṛtāḥ sarvve caikātmabhuktā abhavāma|
For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free; and were all given to drink of one Spirit.
14 ekenāṅgena vapu rna bhavati kintu bahubhiḥ|
For the body is not one member, but many.
15 tatra caraṇaṁ yadi vadet nāhaṁ hastastasmāt śarīrasya bhāgo nāsmīti tarhyanena śarīrāt tasya viyogo na bhavati|
If the foot would say, "Because I'm not the hand, I'm not part of the body," it is not therefore not part of the body.
16 śrotraṁ vā yadi vadet nāhaṁ nayanaṁ tasmāt śarīrasyāṁśo nāsmīti tarhyanena śarīrāt tasya viyogo na bhavati|
If the ear would say, "Because I'm not the eye, I'm not part of the body," it's not therefore not part of the body.
17 kṛtsnaṁ śarīraṁ yadi darśanendriyaṁ bhavet tarhi śravaṇendriyaṁ kutra sthāsyati? tat kṛtsnaṁ yadi vā śravaṇendriyaṁ bhavet tarhi ghraṇendriyaṁ kutra sthāsyati?
If the whole body were an eye, where would the hearing be? If the whole were hearing, where would the smelling be?
18 kintvidānīm īśvareṇa yathābhilaṣitaṁ tathaivāṅgapratyaṅgānām ekaikaṁ śarīre sthāpitaṁ|
But now God has set the members, each one of them, in the body, just as he desired.
19 tat kṛtsnaṁ yadyekāṅgarūpi bhavet tarhi śarīre kutra sthāsyati?
If they were all one member, where would the body be?
20 tasmād aṅgāni bahūni santi śarīraṁ tvekameva|
But now they are many members, but one body.
21 ataeva tvayā mama prayojanaṁ nāstīti vācaṁ pāṇiṁ vadituṁ nayanaṁ na śaknoti, tathā yuvābhyāṁ mama prayojanaṁ nāstīti mūrddhā caraṇau vadituṁ na śaknotiḥ;
The eye cannot tell the hand, "I have no need for you," or again the head to the feet, "I have no need for you."
22 vastutastu vigrahasya yānyaṅgānyasmābhi rdurbbalāni budhyante tānyeva saprayojanāni santi|
No, much rather, those members of the body which seem to be weaker are necessary.
23 yāni ca śarīramadhye'vamanyāni budhyate tānyasmābhiradhikaṁ śobhyante| yāni ca kudṛśyāni tāni sudṛśyatarāṇi kriyante
Those parts of the body which we think to be less honorable, on those we bestow more abundant honor; and our unpresentable parts have more abundant propriety;
24 kintu yāni svayaṁ sudṛśyāni teṣāṁ śobhanam niṣprayojanaṁ|
whereas our presentable parts have no such need. But God composed the body together, giving more abundant honor to the inferior part,
25 śarīramadhye yad bhedo na bhavet kintu sarvvāṇyaṅgāni yad aikyabhāvena sarvveṣāṁ hitaṁ cintayanti tadartham īśvareṇāpradhānam ādaraṇīyaṁ kṛtvā śarīraṁ viracitaṁ|
that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another.
26 tasmād ekasyāṅgasya pīḍāyāṁ jātāyāṁ sarvvāṇyaṅgāni tena saha pīḍyante, ekasya samādare jāte ca sarvvāṇi tena saha saṁhṛṣyanti|
When one member suffers, all the members suffer with it. Or when one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.
27 yūyañca khrīṣṭasya śarīraṁ, yuṣmākam ekaikaśca tasyaikaikam aṅgaṁ|
Now you are the body of Messiah, and members individually.
28 kecit kecit samitāvīśvareṇa prathamataḥ preritā dvitīyata īśvarīyādeśavaktārastṛtīyata upadeṣṭāro niyuktāḥ, tataḥ paraṁ kebhyo'pi citrakāryyasādhanasāmarthyam anāmayakaraṇaśaktirupakṛtau lokaśāsane vā naipuṇyaṁ nānābhāṣābhāṣaṇasāmarthyaṁ vā tena vyatāri|
God has set some in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracle workers, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, and various kinds of tongues.
29 sarvve kiṁ preritāḥ? sarvve kim īśvarīyādeśavaktāraḥ? sarvve kim upadeṣṭāraḥ? sarvve kiṁ citrakāryyasādhakāḥ?
Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all miracle workers?
30 sarvve kim anāmayakaraṇaśaktiyuktāḥ? sarvve kiṁ parabhāṣāvādinaḥ? sarvve vā kiṁ parabhāṣārthaprakāśakāḥ?
Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?
31 yūyaṁ śreṣṭhadāyān labdhuṁ yatadhvaṁ| anena yūyaṁ mayā sarvvottamamārgaṁ darśayitavyāḥ|
But earnestly desire the greater gifts. Moreover, I show a most excellent way to you.
