1 acaraJca parvvaNo dvitIyadinAt paraM prathamavizrAmavAre zasyakSetreNa yIzorgamanakAle tasya ziSyAH kaNizaM chittvA kareSu marddayitvA khAditumArebhire|
Now it came to pass for him to be going through the grain fields on a particular sabbath, and his disciples were plucking the ears and were eating, rubbing them in their hands.
2 tasmAt kiyantaH phirUzinastAnavadan vizrAmavAre yat karmma na karttavyaM tat kutaH kurutha?
But some of the Pharisees said to them, Why do ye what is not permitted to do on the sabbath day?
3 yIzuH pratyuvAca dAyUd tasya saGginazca kSudhArttAH kiM cakruH sa katham Izvarasya mandiraM pravizya
And having answered them, Jesus said, Have ye not read even this, what David did when he was hungry, and those who were with him,
4 ye darzanIyAH pUpA yAjakAn vinAnyasya kasyApyabhojanIyAstAnAnIya svayaM bubhaje saGgibhyopi dadau tat kiM yuSmAbhiH kadApi nApAThi?
how he entered into the house of God, and took and ate the loaves of the presentation, and also gave to those who were with him, which is not permitted to eat, except the priests alone?
5 pazcAt sa tAnavadat manujasuto vizrAmavArasyApi prabhu rbhavati|
And he said to them, The Son of man is lord also of the sabbath.
6 anantaram anyavizrAmavAre sa bhajanagehaM pravizya samupadizati| tadA tatsthAne zuSkadakSiNakara ekaH pumAn upatasthivAn|
And it also came to pass on another sabbath for him to enter into the synagogue and teach. And a man was there, and his right hand was withered.
7 tasmAd adhyApakAH phirUzinazca tasmin doSamAropayituM sa vizrAmavAre tasya svAsthyaM karoti naveti pratIkSitumArebhire|
And the scholars and the Pharisees watched if he would heal on the sabbath, so that they might find an accusation against him.
8 tadA yIzusteSAM cintAM viditvA taM zuSkakaraM pumAMsaM provAca, tvamutthAya madhyasthAne tiSTha|
But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man who had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And having risen, he stood up.
9 tasmAt tasmin utthitavati yIzustAn vyAjahAra, yuSmAn imAM kathAM pRcchAmi, vizrAmavAre hitam ahitaM vA, prANarakSaNaM prANanAzanaM vA, eteSAM kiM karmmakaraNIyam?
Then Jesus said to them, I will question you. What? Is it permitted on the sabbath to do good, or to do harm, to save life, or to kill?
10 pazcAt caturdikSu sarvvAn vilokya taM mAnavaM babhASe, nijakaraM prasAraya; tatastena tathA kRta itarakaravat tasya hastaH svasthobhavat|
And having looked around on them all, he said to him, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did, and his hand was restored whole as the other.
11 tasmAt te pracaNDakopAnvitA yIzuM kiM kariSyantIti parasparaM pramantritAH|
But they were filled with fury, and deliberated with each other what they might do to Jesus.
12 tataH paraM sa parvvatamAruhyezvaramuddizya prArthayamAnaH kRtsnAM rAtriM yApitavAn|
And he happened in these days to go out onto the mountain to pray, and he was continuing all night in prayer to God.
13 atha dine sati sa sarvvAn ziSyAn AhUtavAn teSAM madhye
And when it became day, he called his disciples, and chose twelve from them, whom he also named apostles:
14 pitaranAmnA khyAtaH zimon tasya bhrAtA Andriyazca yAkUb yohan ca philip barthalamayazca
Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,
15 mathiH thomA AlphIyasya putro yAkUb jvalantanAmnA khyAtaH zimon
Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot,
16 ca yAkUbo bhrAtA yihUdAzca taM yaH parakareSu samarpayiSyati sa ISkarIyotIyayihUdAzcaitAn dvAdaza janAn manonItAn kRtvA sa jagrAha tathA prerita iti teSAM nAma cakAra|
Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.
17 tataH paraM sa taiH saha parvvatAdavaruhya upatyakAyAM tasthau tatastasya ziSyasaGgho yihUdAdezAd yirUzAlamazca soraH sIdonazca jaladhe rodhaso jananihAzca etya tasya kathAzravaNArthaM rogamuktyarthaJca tasya samIpe tasthuH|
And having come down with them, he stood on a level place. And a company of his disciples, and a large number of the people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and the maritime Tyre and Sidon, were those who came to hear him, and to be healed from their diseases,
18 amedhyabhUtagrastAzca tannikaTamAgatya svAsthyaM prApuH|
also those who were afflicted with unclean spirits. And they were healed.
19 sarvveSAM svAsthyakaraNaprabhAvasya prakAzitatvAt sarvve lokA etya taM spraSTuM yetire|
And all the multitude sought to touch him, because power came forth from him, and healed them all.
20 pazcAt sa ziSyAn prati dRSTiM kutvA jagAda, he daridrA yUyaM dhanyA yata IzvarIye rAjye vo'dhikArosti|
And having lifted up his eyes on his disciples, he said, Blessed are the poor, because the kingdom of God is what belongs to you.
21 he adhunA kSudhitalokA yUyaM dhanyA yato yUyaM tarpsyatha; he iha rodino janA yUyaM dhanyA yato yUyaM hasiSyatha|
Blessed are those who hunger now, because ye will be filled. Blessed are those who weep now, because ye will laugh.
22 yadA lokA manuSyasUno rnAmaheto ryuSmAn RtIyiSyante pRthak kRtvA nindiSyanti, adhamAniva yuSmAn svasamIpAd dUrIkariSyanti ca tadA yUyaM dhanyAH|
Blessed are ye, when men will hate you, and when they will exclude you, and revile you, and cast out your name as evil, because of the Son of man.
23 svarge yuSmAkaM yatheSTaM phalaM bhaviSyati, etadarthaM tasmin dine prollasata Anandena nRtyata ca, teSAM pUrvvapuruSAzca bhaviSyadvAdinaH prati tathaiva vyavAharan|
Rejoice ye in that day, and leap, for behold, your reward is great in heaven, for their fathers did in the same way to the prophets.
24 kintu hA hA dhanavanto yUyaM sukhaM prApnuta| hanta paritRptA yUyaM kSudhitA bhaviSyatha;
However, woe to you the rich, because ye have received your consolation.
25 iha hasanto yUyaM vata yuSmAbhiH zocitavyaM roditavyaJca|
Woe to you who are filled now, because ye will hunger. Woe to you who laugh now, because ye will mourn and weep.
26 sarvvailAkai ryuSmAkaM sukhyAtau kRtAyAM yuSmAkaM durgati rbhaviSyati yuSmAkaM pUrvvapuruSA mRSAbhaviSyadvAdinaH prati tadvat kRtavantaH|
Woe when men will speak well of you, for their fathers did in the same way to the false prophets.
27 he zrotAro yuSmabhyamahaM kathayAmi, yUyaM zatruSu prIyadhvaM ye ca yuSmAn dviSanti teSAmapi hitaM kuruta|
But I say to you, to those who hear, love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.
28 ye ca yuSmAn zapanti tebhya AziSaM datta ye ca yuSmAn avamanyante teSAM maGgalaM prArthayadhvaM|
Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who mistreat you.
29 yadi kazcit tava kapole capeTAghAtaM karoti tarhi taM prati kapolam anyaM parAvarttya sammukhIkuru punazca yadi kazcit tava gAtrIyavastraM harati tarhi taM paridheyavastram api grahItuM mA vAraya|
To him who strikes thee on the cheek offer the other also, and from him who takes away thy cloak, also do not withhold thy coat.
30 yastvAM yAcate tasmai dehi, yazca tava sampattiM harati taM mA yAcasva|
Give to every man who asks thee, and from him who takes away thy personal things do not demand them back.
31 parebhyaH svAn prati yathAcaraNam apekSadhve parAn prati yUyamapi tathAcarata|
And as ye desire that men would do to you, do ye also to them likewise.
32 ye janA yuSmAsu prIyante kevalaM teSu prIyamANeSu yuSmAkaM kiM phalaM? pApilokA api sveSu prIyamANeSu prIyante|
And if ye love those who love you, what credit is for you? For even sinners love those who love them.
33 yadi hitakAriNa eva hitaM kurutha tarhi yuSmAkaM kiM phalaM? pApilokA api tathA kurvvanti|
And if ye do good to those who do good to you, what credit is for you? For even sinners do the same.
34 yebhya RNaparizodhasya prAptipratyAzAste kevalaM teSu RNe samarpite yuSmAkaM kiM phalaM? punaH prAptyAzayA pApIlokA api pApijaneSu RNam arpayanti|
And if ye lend to whom ye hope to receive, what credit is for you? For even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again.
35 ato yUyaM ripuSvapi prIyadhvaM, parahitaM kuruta ca; punaH prAptyAzAM tyaktvA RNamarpayata, tathA kRte yuSmAkaM mahAphalaM bhaviSyati, yUyaJca sarvvapradhAnasya santAnA iti khyAtiM prApsyatha, yato yuSmAkaM pitA kRtaghnAnAM durvTattAnAJca hitamAcarati|
But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, despairing nothing, and your reward will be great. And ye will be sons of the Most High, because he is good toward the ungrateful and bad.
36 ata eva sa yathA dayAlu ryUyamapi tAdRzA dayAlavo bhavata|
Become ye therefore merciful, even as your Father is merciful.
37 aparaJca parAn doSiNo mA kuruta tasmAd yUyaM doSIkRtA na bhaviSyatha; adaNDyAn mA daNDayata tasmAd yUyamapi daNDaM na prApsyatha; pareSAM doSAn kSamadhvaM tasmAd yuSmAkamapi doSAH kSamiSyante|
And do not criticize, and ye will, no, not be criticized. And do not condemn, and ye will, no, not be condemned. Forgive, and ye will be forgiven.
38 dAnAnidatta tasmAd yUyaM dAnAni prApsyatha, varaJca lokAH parimANapAtraM pradalayya saJcAlya proJcAlya paripUryya yuSmAkaM kroDeSu samarpayiSyanti; yUyaM yena parimANena parimAtha tenaiva parimANena yuSmatkRte parimAsyate|
Give, and it will be given to you, good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, they will give into your bosom. For with the same measure with which ye measure, it will be measured again to you.
39 atha sa tebhyo dRSTAntakathAmakathayat, andho janaH kimandhaM panthAnaM darzayituM zaknoti? tasmAd ubhAvapi kiM gartte na patiSyataH?
And he spoke a parable to them. Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a ditch?
40 guroH ziSyo na zreSThaH kintu ziSye siddhe sati sa gurutulyo bhavituM zaknoti|
A disciple is not above his teacher, but every disciple who is fully developed will be as his teacher.
41 aparaJca tvaM svacakSuSi nAsAm adRSTvA tava bhrAtuzcakSuSi yattRNamasti tadeva kutaH pazyami?
And why do thou see the speck in thy brother's eye, but do not perceive the beam in thine own eye?
42 svacakSuSi yA nAsA vidyate tAm ajJAtvA, bhrAtastava netrAt tRNaM bahiH karomIti vAkyaM bhrAtaraM kathaM vaktuM zaknoSi? he kapaTin pUrvvaM svanayanAt nAsAM bahiH kuru tato bhrAtuzcakSuSastRNaM bahiH karttuM sudRSTiM prApsyasi|
Or how can thou say to thy brother, Brother, allow me to take out the speck that is in thine eye, when thou thyself do not see the beam in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first take out the beam from thine own eye, and then thou will see clearly to take out the speck in thy brother's eye.
43 anyaJca uttamastaruH kadApi phalamanuttamaM na phalati, anuttamataruzca phalamuttamaM na phalati kAraNAdataH phalaistaravo jJAyante|
For a good tree is not producing corrupt fruit, nor a corrupt tree producing good fruit.
44 kaNTakipAdapAt kopi uDumbaraphalAni na pAtayati tathA zRgAlakolivRkSAdapi kopi drAkSAphalaM na pAtayati|
For each tree is known from its own fruit. For they do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they harvest grapes from a bramble bush.
45 tadvat sAdhuloko'ntaHkaraNarUpAt subhANDAgArAd uttamAni dravyANi bahiH karoti, duSTo lokazcAntaHkaraNarUpAt kubhANDAgArAt kutsitAni dravyANi nirgamayati yato'ntaHkaraNAnAM pUrNabhAvAnurUpANi vacAMsi mukhAnnirgacchanti|
The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth the good, and the bad man out of the bad treasure of his heart brings forth the bad, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
46 aparaJca mamAjJAnurUpaM nAcaritvA kuto mAM prabho prabho iti vadatha?
And why do ye call me, Lord, Lord, and not do the things that I say?
47 yaH kazcin mama nikaTam Agatya mama kathA nizamya tadanurUpaM karmma karoti sa kasya sadRzo bhavati tadahaM yuSmAn jJApayAmi|
Every man who comes to me, and hears my sayings, and does them, I will show you to whom he is like.
48 yo jano gabhIraM khanitvA pASANasthale bhittiM nirmmAya svagRhaM racayati tena saha tasyopamA bhavati; yata AplAvijalametya tasya mUle vegena vahadapi tadgehaM lADayituM na zaknoti yatastasya bhittiH pASANopari tiSThati|
He is like a man who builds a house, who dug and excavated, and laid a foundation upon the rock. And when a flood developed, the stream beat upon that house, and could not shake it, for it had been founded upon the rock.
49 kintu yaH kazcin mama kathAH zrutvA tadanurUpaM nAcarati sa bhittiM vinA mRdupari gRhanirmmAtrA samAno bhavati; yata AplAvijalamAgatya vegena yadA vahati tadA tadgRhaM patati tasya mahat patanaM jAyate|
But he who heard, and not having done, is like a man who built a house upon the soil without a foundation, on which the stream beat, and straightaway it fell. And the ruin of that house became great.
