Atos 28
1 Após chegarmos (excl) sãos e salvos [na praia, ]soubemos que se tratava de uma ilha chamada {que as pessoas chamavam} Malta.
After we [(exc)] had arrived safely [on the shore], we learned that it was an island called Malta.
2 As pessoas que moravam lá nos acolheram bem/bondosamente. Acenderam uma fogueira e nos convidaram a nos aquecermos, pois chovia e fazia frio.
The people who lived there received us kindly. They lit a fire and invited us to come and warm ourselves, because it was raining and it was cold.
3 Paulo juntou uns galhos e os jogou na fogueira. Mas uma cobra saiu [do fogo, fugindo ]do calor, agarrou-se na mão de Paulo.
Paul gathered some sticks and put them on the fire. But [among those sticks was] a snake that had come out [from the fire to escape] from the heat, and it fastened itself on Paul’s hand.
4 [Os habitantes da ilha sabiam que a cobra era venenosa, portanto, ]ao vê-la pendente da mão de Paulo, disseram uns aos outros: “Esse homem pode ter matado alguém. Embora tenha escapado de se afogar, [o Deus que retribui ]os pecados [das pessoas ][MTY] vai fazê-lo morrer”.
[The islanders knew that the snake was poisonous, so] when they saw it hanging from Paul’s hand, they said to each other, “Probably this man has murdered someone. Although he has escaped from being drowned, [the god] ([who] pays [people back/who punishes people]) for their [MTY] sins will cause him to die.”
5 Mas Paulo sacudiu a cobra e ela caiu no fogo, sem nada de mal acontecer a ele.
But Paul simply shook the snake off into the fire, and nothing happened to him.
6 As pessoas esperavam que Paulo ficasse inchado ou caísse morto de repente. Mas após bastante tempo, viram [que a cobra ]não lhe tinha feito nenhum mal. Portanto mudaram de ideia, dizendo [umas às outras: ]“Esse homem não é assassino! Pode até ser um deus”!
The people were expecting that Paul’s body would soon swell up or that he would suddenly fall down and die. But after they had waited a long time, they saw [that the snake] had not harmed him [at all]. So then the people changed their minds and said [to one another], “This man is not a murderer! Probably he is a god!”
7 Próximo ao local onde tinha sido acendida a fogueira, havia um campo agrícola que pertencia a um homem chamado Públio. Ele era o chefe-mor da ilha. Públio nos convidou a [ir hospedar-nos na ]casa dele. [Ele nos levou até lá ]e cuidou de nós durante três dias.
Near where the people had made the fire, there were some fields that belonged to a man whose name was Publius. He was the chief official on the island. He invited us to [come and stay in] his home. He took care of us for three days.
8 [Naquela altura ]o pai de Públio estava com febre e disenteria e estava deitado [na cama. ]Por isso Paulo o visitou e orou por [ele. Logo ]Paulo lhe impôs as mãos e o curou da doença.
[At that time] Publius’ father had a fever and dysentery, and he was lying [in bed]. So Paul visited him and prayed [for him. Then] Paul placed his hands on him and healed him.
9 Após Paulo fazer isso, os demais habitantes da ilha que padeciam de alguma enfermidade vieram ter [com ele/encontrá-lo ]e foram curados {[ele ]os curou}.
After Paul had done that, the other people on the island who were sick came [to him] and [he] healed them, too.
10 Eles nos trouxeram presentes [e mostravam de outras maneiras que ]nos respeitavam profundamente. [Três meses depois, ]quando estávamos [prestes ]a partir, eles nos trouxeram comida e outras coisas de que precisaríamos [no navio].
They brought us gifts and [showed in other ways that] they greatly respected us. When we were [ready] to leave [three months later], they brought us food and other things that we would need [for the trip].
11 Após [ficarmos lá ]durante três meses, [embarcamos ]num navio [que partia com destino à Itália e ]iniciamos nossa viagem. O navio tinha ficado n[um porto ]da ilha durante os meses tormentosos. Tinha vindo da [cidade de ]Alexandria. Havia na proa do navio imagens dos deuses gêmeos, [Cástor e Pólux. ]
After [we had stayed there] three months, we [got on] a ship [that was going to Italy and] sailed away. The ship had been in [a harbor on] the island during the months when there are many storms. It had come from Alexandria [city]. On the front of the ship there were carved images of the twin gods [whose names were Castor and Pollux].
12 [Navegamos da ilha e ]chegamos à [cidade de ]Siracusa [na ilha de Sicília, ]onde passamos três dias.
We [sailed from the island and] arrived at Syracuse [city on Sicily island] and stayed there three days.
13 Então viajamos de navio e chegamos [ao porto de ]Régio, [na Itália. ]No dia seguinte, chegamos à [cidade de ]Putéoli, [onde desembarcamos do navio].
Then we traveled on by ship and arrived at Rhegium [port in Italy]. The next day, the wind was blowing from behind us, [so we sailed along fast]. The day after that, we reached Puteoli [town, where we left the ship].
14 Em Putéoli, deparamos com alguns cristãos, que nos convidaram {por quem fomos convidados} a nos hospedar com eles durante uma semana. [Após visitá-los, saímos dali e passamos a viajar por terra, ]com destino à [cidade de ]Roma.
In Puteoli we met some believers who invited us to stay with them for a week. [After visiting them], we [left there and started to travel by land] to Rome.
15 [Alguns ]cristãos [que moravam em Roma ]tinham ouvido que nós (excl) [nos aproximávamos da cidade. ]Portanto eles saíram [de Roma ]ao nosso encontro. [Alguns ]deles se encontraram conosco na [cidadezinha que as pessoas chamam ]‘a Feira na [Via ]de Ápio’, e outros vieram ter conosco na [cidadezinha que as pessoas chamam ]‘as Três Vendas’. Quando Paulo se encontrou com esses cristãos, ele deu graças a Deus e ficou mais animado.
[A group of] believers [who lived in Rome] had heard that we [(exc) were coming]. So they came out [from Rome] to meet us. [Some of] them met us at [the town called] ‘The Market on Appian [Road’, ] and others met us at [the town called] ‘The Three Inns’. When Paul saw those believers, he thanked God and was encouraged.
16 Após chegarmos (excl) em Roma, Paulo obteve licença para morar{[um oficial romano, designado para guardar Paulo, ]permitiu que ele morasse} [numa casa ]independente. [Contudo, havia sempre por perto ]um soldado para guardá-lo.
After we [(exc)] arrived in Rome, Paul was permitted {[a Roman official who was responsible for guarding Paul] permitted Paul} to live [in a house] by himself. But [there was always] a soldier there to guard him.
17 Depois de ficar lá três dias, Paulo mandou um recado aos líderes dos judeus, convidando-os [a virem conversar com ele. Portanto ]eles vieram, e Paulo lhes disse: “Meus irmãos judeus, embora eu não me oponha ao nosso povo, nem fale contra os costumes dos nossos antepassados, [nossos líderes ]em Jerusalém [me prenderam ][MTY]. [Mas antes que me pudessem matar, um comandante romano me resgatou e posteriormente me mandou à Cesareia ]para que [os oficiais ]romanos me [pudessem julgar. ]
After [Paul had been there] three days, he sent a message to the Jewish leaders [to come and talk with him. So] they came, and Paul said to them, “My fellow Jews, although I have not opposed our people nor spoken against the customs of our ancestors, [our leaders] in Jerusalem [seized] [MTY] [me. But before they could kill me, a Roman commander rescued me and later sent me] to Caesarea for Roman [authorities/officials to put me on trial].
18 Os oficiais romanos me interrogaram e quiseram me soltar, pois eu não tinha feito nada [de mal ]pelo qual eles devessem executar-/matar-me.
The Roman authorities/officials questioned me and wanted to release me, because I had not done any [bad] thing for which I should be executed {they should kill me}.
19 Mas quando os [líderes ]judaicos [SYN] lá se opuseram [àquilo que os oficiais romanos desejavam fazer, ]fui obrigado a pedir formalmente que o Imperador [me julgasse aqui em Roma. ]Mas não fiz isso por querer acusar nossos líderes de nada.
But when the Jewish [leaders] [SYN] there opposed [what the Roman authorities wanted to do], I had to formally request that the Emperor [judge me here in Rome]. But my reason for doing that was not that I wanted to accuse our leaders about anything.
20 Por isso pedi que vocês [viessem ]aqui para eu lhes explicar por que estou preso. É porque creio em [MTY] nosso Messias [que Deus prometeu, há muito tempo, mandar ]a nós (incl) judeus”.
So I have requested you [to come] here so that I can tell you why I am a prisoner. It is because I believe in [MTY] our Messiah, the one [God long ago promised to send] to us [(inc)] Jews.”
21 Então os líderes judaicos disseram: “Nós (excl) não recebemos nenhuma carta a seu respeito [dos irmãos judeus ]na Judeia. Como também, nenhum dos nossos irmãos judeus vindos [da Judeia ]disse nada negativo sobre você.
Then [the Jewish leaders] said, “We [(exc)] have not received any letters from [our fellow Jews] in Judea about you. Also, none of our fellow Jews who have arrived [here from Judea] has said anything bad about you.
22 Mas desejamos (excl) ouvir o que você acha dessa seita [cristã, ]pois sabemos que em muitos lugares [HYP] se fazem críticas {as pessoas fazem críticas} dela”.
But we [(exc)] want to hear what you [(sg)] think about this [Christian] sect/group, because we know that in many places [HYP] bad things are being said {people are saying bad things} about it.”
23 Por isso [eles conversaram com Paulo e resolveram voltar, em outra ocasião, para ouvi-lo falar. Quando chegou o dia oportuno, ]aqueles judeus voltaram ao lugar onde Paulo estava hospedado, trazendo consigo mais judeus. Paulo conversou com eles o dia inteiro {da manhã até a noite} sobre como Deus quer governar [a vida dos seres humanos ][MET]. Ele tentou convencê-los de ser Jesus [o Messias, ]lembrando-lhes o que Moisés e os demais profetas escreveram [MTY].
So they [talked with Paul and decided that they would come back on another day to hear him. When that day arrived], those Jews came back to the place where Paul was staying, and they brought more Jews with them. Paul talked to them from morning until evening. He talked to them about how God wants to rule [people’s lives] [MET]. He tried to convince them that Jesus [is the Messiah] by reminding them what Moses and the other prophets had written [MTY].
24 Alguns daqueles judeus acreditaram [ser verdade ]o que [Paulo ]disse {que foi dito [por Paulo]} sobre Jesus, mas outros [não deram fé ]às/acreditaram nas palavras dele.
Some of those Jews believed that what was said [by Paul] {what [Paul] said} about Jesus [was true], but others did not believe [that it was true].
25 Por isso eles começaram a discutir uns com os outros. [Paulo percebeu que alguns deles não queriam ouvi-lo, e ]quando eles estavam para sair, ele disse: “O Espírito Santo disse algo aos seus antepassados. Ele proferiu estas palavras a Isaías o profeta, [e aquilo que disse se refere também a vocês: ]
So they began to argue with one another. [Paul realized that some of them did not want to listen to him, so] when they were about to leave, he said, “The Holy Spirit said something to your/our(incl) ancestors. He spoke these words to Isaiah the prophet, [and what he said is also true about you]:
26 Diga aos seus irmãos israelitas: ‘Vocês escutam repetidamente [a mensagem de Deus, ] mas nunca conseguem entender [o que Deus está dizendo. ] Vocês contemplam repetidamente [as coisas que Deus faz, ] mas nunca conseguem entender [o significado delas]’”.
Go to your fellow Israelites and tell them, ‘You repeatedly listen [to the message of God], but you never understand [what God is saying]. You repeatedly look at and see [the things that God is doing], but you never understand [what they mean].
27 [Deus disse ao profeta]: “Estas pessoas [não entendem, pois ]se tornaram teimosas/inflexíveis. Têm ouvidos, mas não [entendem o que ]ouvem e fecharam os olhos pois [não querem ver. ] Se tivessem desejado [obedecer aquilo que lhes digo, ]poderiam entender com o coração aquilo que me contemplam [fazer ]e o que me ouvem [dizer. ] Então elas poderiam até afastar-se do seu mau comportamento, e eu as salvaria”. [Foi isso que Deus disse ao profeta Isaías sobre os judeus/israelitas. ]
God also said to the prophet, These people do not understand, because they have become stubborn. They have ears, but they do not understand what they hear, and they have closed their eyes [because they do not want to see]. If they wanted to obey what I say to them, they might understand what they see [me doing] and what they hear [me saying]. Then they might turn from their sinful behavior and I would save them.’
28 [Mas vocês judeus não querem acreditar na mensagem de Deus. ]Portanto, eu lhes digo que esta mensagem, sobre como Deus salva as pessoas, tem sido mandada aos gentios/não judeus {que [Deus ]tem mandado aos gentios/não judeus esta mensagem sobre como Ele salva as pessoas}, e eles vão ouvi-la [e aceitá-la]”.
[That is what God said to the prophet Isaiah about our ancestors. But you Jews today do not want to believe God’s message]. Therefore, I am telling you that [God] has sent to the non-Jews this message about how he saves people, and they will listen [and accept it]!”
30 Durante dois anos completos Paulo ficou [lá ]numa casa alugada. Muitas pessoas vieram ter com ele/encontrá-lo, e ele acolhia todas elas com alegria e [conversava com elas. ]
For two whole years Paul stayed [there] in a house that he rented. Many people came to see him, and he received them all gladly [and talked with them].
31 Ele pregava [e ensinava ]sobre como Deus pode governar [as vidas humanas ][MET] e ensinava as pessoas sobre o Senhor Jesus Cristo. Procedia assim sem medo, e ninguém tentou impedi-lo. Alguns manuscritos gregos acrescentam o versículo 29, “Depois que Paulo disse isso, os judeus foram embora, discutindo com violência”.
He preached [and taught people] about how God could rule [their lives] [MET] and taught them about the Lord Jesus Christ. He did that without being afraid, and no one tried to stop him.
