Atos 22
1 Paulo disse: “Líderes [judaicos ]e meus outros irmãos judeus, escutem-me agora responder [àqueles que me acusam]!”
Paul said, “[Jewish] elders and my other fellow Jews, listen to me now while I reply to [those who are accusing me]!”
2 Ao ouvir Paulo falar [na sua própria ]língua hebraica, a multidão se calou ainda mais e passou a escutar atentamente. Então Paulo disse:
When the crowd of people heard Paul speaking to them in [their own] Hebrew language, they became even more quiet and really listened. Then Paul said to them,
3 “Sou judeu. Nasci na [cidade de ]Tarso, na [província de ]Cilícia, mas fui criado aqui em Jerusalém. [Quando era jovem, durante muitos anos ]estudei as leis [que Moisés deu a nossos antepassados. ]Fui instruído pelo [famoso mestre ]Gamaliel [MTY] {O [famoso mestre ]Gamaliel me ensinou [MTY]} [e, durante alguns anos, obedeci ]cuidadosamente [àquelas leis, pois ]eu desejava obedecer a Deus[. Tenho certeza de que ]muitos de vocês também obedecem cuidadosamente [àquelas leis. ]
“I am a Jew, [as are all of you]. I was born in Tarsus [city], in Cilicia [province], but I grew up here in Jerusalem. [When I was young, for many years] I studied the laws [that Moses gave to our ancestors]. I was taught by [the famous teacher] Gamaliel [MTY] {[The famous teacher] Gamaliel taught [MTY] me}. [I have] carefully [obeyed those laws, because] I have wanted to obey God. I [am sure that] many of you also carefully obey [those laws].
4 [É por isso que] eu perseguia antes aqueles que creem na mensagem que as pessoas chamam o Caminho que Jesus ensinou. [Eu buscava continuamente maneiras de matá-los. Sempre que eu encontrava ]homens ou mulheres [que acreditavam naquela mensagem, mandava ]prendê-los e botá-los na cadeia.
[That is why] I previously persecuted those who believe the message [that people call] the Way [that Jesus taught. I continually looked for ways] to kill [them. Whenever I found] men or women [who believed that message], I [commanded that] they should be seized and thrown {[people to] seize them and throw them} into jail.
5 O sumo sacerdote sabe disso, como também os [demais respeitados membros do nosso ]Conselho [Judaico]. Eles me deram cartas para [apresentar aos ]irmãos judeus na [cidade de ]Damasco. [Por meio dessas cartas, eles me autorizavam a ir ]a Damasco e localizar cristãos [em Jesus. Eles tinham escrito nas cartas que eu deveria levar essas pessoas ]presas a Jerusalém, para que pudessem ser castigadas {[os líderes aqui ]pudessem castigá-las}. [Por isso saí rumo a Damasco].
The supreme priest knows this, and so do the [other respected men who belong to our Jewish] Council. They gave me letters to [take to] their fellow Jews in Damascus [city. By means of those letters, they authorized me to] go to there and find people who believed in [Jesus. They had written in the letters that I was to bring those people] as prisoners to Jerusalem, so that they would be punished here {[the leaders here] could punish them}. [So I went on my way to Damascus].
6 Por volta do meio-dia, eu e meus companheiros nos aproximávamos de Damasco. De repente brilhou a meu redor uma forte luz do céu.
About noon, my companions and I were getting near Damascus. Suddenly a bright light from the sky flashed all around me.
7 [A luz era tão brilhante que ]caí ao chão. Então ouvi a voz [de alguém ]que me falava [lá do céu. Aquele que me falava disse: ]‘Saulo! Saulo! Por que você faz coisas para me prejudicar?’
[The light was so bright that] I fell to the ground. Then I heard the voice [of someone] speaking to me [from up in the sky. The one who was speaking to me said], ‘Saul! Saul! Why do you [(sg)] do things to harm me?’
8 Eu respondi: ‘Quem é o Senhor?’ Ele respondeu: ‘Sou Jesus de Nazaré. [Sou eu ]que você está prejudicando ao [fazer coisas que prejudicam meus seguidores’. ]
I answered, ‘Who are you?’ He replied, ‘I am Jesus from Nazareth. I [am the one] whom you [(sg)] are harming [by doing things to harm my followers].’
9 Os homens que [viajavam ]comigo viram a luz [muito brilhante e ouviram uma voz, ]mas não entenderam aquilo que a voz me dizia.
The men who were [traveling] with me saw the [very bright] light, [and they heard a voice], but they did not understand what the voice said to me.
10 Então perguntei: ‘Senhor, o que [o Senhor quer] que eu faça?’ O Senhor me disse: ‘Levante-se e entre em Damasco! Ali lhe será dito {[Um senhor que ]mora lá he dirá} tudo que foi planejado {que planejei} para você fazer.’
Then I asked, ‘Lord, what [do you want] me to do?’ The Lord told me, ‘Get up and go into Damascus! [A man] there will tell you [(sg)] all that I have planned for you to do.’
11 [Depois disso, não consegui enxergar, ]pois a luz brilhante me cegou. Por isso meus companheiros me levaram pela mão e fui guiado por eles {e me guiaram} até [chegarmos ](excl) em Damasco.
[After that, I could not see], because the [very bright] light had caused me to become blind. So my companions took me by the hand and led me until [we(exc) arrived] in Damascus.
12 [Uns dois dias ]depois, veio [ver]-me um homem chamado Ananias. Ele era um homem que [respeitava profundamente a Deus e ]obedecia cuidadosamente às [nossas ]leis [judaicas. ]Todos os judeus que moravam em Damasco falavam bem dele {Falava-se bem dele entre os judeus que moravam em Damasco}.
[A couple of days] later, a man whose name was Ananias came to [see] me. He was a man who [greatly respected God and] carefully obeyed [our Jewish] laws. All the Jews living in Damascus said good things about him.
13 Ele veio e ficou a meu lado. Então me disse: ‘Amigo Saulo, [recupere a ]visão!’ Naquele instante voltei a ver! Eu o vi [em pé a meu lado. ]
He came and stood beside me and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, see [again]!’ Instantly I could see! I saw Ananias [standing there beside me].
14 Então ele disse: ‘O Deus que [nós ](incl) [adoramos e ]que nossos antepassados [adoravam ]escolheu você e lhe mostrará o que Ele quer [que você faça. Ele deixou que você ]visse o Justo, [O Messias], e você O ouviu falar [consigo. ]
Then he said: ‘The God whom [we(inc) worship and] whom our ancestors [worshipped] has chosen you and will show you what he wants [you to do. He has allowed you] to see the righteous one, [the Messiah], and you have heard him speaking [to you].
15 Ele quer que você comunique às pessoas por toda parte aquilo que viu e ouviu [dele.]
He wants you to tell people everywhere what you have seen and heard [from him].
16 Portanto, não demore mais!/para que [RHQ] demorar mais? Levante-se, deixe[-me ]batizá-lo e, orando ao Senhor [Jesus, pedir que Deus ]lhe perdoe os pecados.’
So now (do not delay!/why delay?) [RHQ] Stand up, let [me] baptize you, and by praying to the Lord [Jesus ask God] to forgive you [(sg)] for your sins!’”
17 Mais tarde, voltei a Jerusalém. [Um dia ]eu fui ao Templo. Enquanto eu orava lá, tive uma visão, [na qual ]
“Later, I returned to Jerusalem. [One day] I went to the Temple courtyard. While I was praying there, I saw a vision [in which]
18 vi o Senhor, que me falava. Ele me disse: ‘[Não fique mais aqui]! Saia imediatamente de Jerusalém, pois os habitantes [daqui ]não acreditarão naquilo que você lhes [disser ]sobre mim’.
I saw the Lord speaking to me. He said to me, ‘[Do not stay here]! Leave Jerusalem immediately, because the people [here] will not (believe/listen to) what you [(sg)] tell [them] about me!’
19 Mas [protestei, ]dizendo-lhe: ‘Senhor, eles sabem que eu ia a muitas das nossas casas de reunião, procurando aqueles que creem no senhor; eu prendia na cadeia os [que eu encontrava ]que acreditavam no senhor e os surrava.
But I [protested and] said to him, ‘Lord, they know that I went to many of our meeting houses looking for people who believe in you. I was putting in jail those [whom I found] who believed in you, and I was even beating them.
20 [Eles se lembram que ]quando Estêvão foi morto [MTY] {quando as pessoas mataram [MTY] Estêvão} por ele falar do Senhor às pessoas, lá estava eu [observando tudo ]e aprovando [aquilo que faziam. Mostrei ]minha aprovação, guardando as capas [jogadas para um lado ]por aqueles que o matavam. [Portanto, se eu ficar aqui, o fato de eu ter mudado meu pensamento sobre Jesus com certeza impressionará aqueles líderes do nosso povo’.]
[They remember that] when Stephen was killed [MTY] {when people killed [MTY] Stephen} because he told people about you, I stood there [watching it all] and approving [what they were doing]. I [even] guarded the outer garments that those who were murdering him [had thrown aside. So if I stay here, the fact that I have changed how I think about you will surely impress those leaders of our people].’
21 Mas o Senhor me disse: ‘Não, saia de [Jerusalém], pois vou mandá-lo longe [daqui, ]para os gentios/não judeus!’”
But the Lord said to me, ‘No, [do not stay here]! Leave [Jerusalem, because] I am going to send you [(sg)] far away [from here] to non-Jewish people!’”
22 Os ouvintes escutavam [calados ]aquilo que Paulo lhes dizia até [ele mencionar que o Senhor o tinha mandado aos gentios/não judeus. ]Nesse momento eles começaram a gritar, [cheios de raiva: ]“Matem-no, pois [ele não deve ficar mais ]na terra! Nós (incl) não devemos deixar tal homem viver mais”! [Falaram assim porque não acreditavam que Deus pudesse salvar alguém que não fosse judeu.]
The people listened [quietly] to what Paul was saying until [he mentioned the Lord sending him to non-Jewish people]. Then they began shouting [angrily], “Kill him! [He does not deserve to live any longer]!” [They said that because they could not believe that God would save anyone except Jews].
23 Enquanto eles continuavam gritando: “[Matem-no]!” tiravam as/os capas/casacos e jogavam poeira no ar em [sinal de raiva. ]
While they continued shouting, [“Kill him!”] they took off their cloaks and threw dust into the air, [which showed how angry they were].
24 Por isso o comandante mandou que Paulo fosse levado {que [os soldados ]levassem Paulo} para dentro do quartel. Ele mandou chicotear Paulo {Ele mandou que [os soldados ]chicoteassem Paulo} com um chicote [contendo pedacinhos de osso/metal na ponta, ]para obrigar Paulo a [lhe ]confessar o que tinha feito que tinha estimulado os judeus a gritarem com tanta raiva. [Por isso os soldados levaram Paulo para dentro do quartel. ]
So the commander [commanded] that Paul be taken {[soldiers] to take Paul} into the barracks. He told [the soldiers] that they should strike Paul with a whip [that had pieces of bone/metal on the end of it], in order to make him tell what he had done that made the Jews shout so angrily. [So the soldiers took Paul into the barracks].
25 Eles estiravam os braços dele [e os amarraram ]para que pudessem chicoteá-lo [nas costas. Mas ]Paulo disse ao oficial / capitão que estava ali perto, [observando]: “[O senhor deve pensar duas vezes sobre isto]! Com certeza o senhor estará agindo/Não estará agindo [RHQ] ilegalmente ao me chicotear, pois sou um [cidadão ]romano que ninguém processou nem condenou!?”
Then they stretched his arms out [and tied them] so that they could whip him [on his back. But] Paul said to the officer who was standing nearby [watching], “[You(sg) should think carefully about this]! You will certainly be [RHQ] acting unlawfully if you whip me, a Roman [citizen whom] no [one has put on trial and] condemned!”
26 Ao ouvir isso, o oficial foi ter com / encontrar o comandante e relatou a conversa a ele, dizendo [ao comandante: ]“Esse homem é [cidadão ]romano! Com certeza o senhor não mandaria/Será que o senhor realmente desejava [RHQ] mandar [que o chicoteássemos/chicoteemos!?]”
When the officer heard that, he went to the commander and reported it to him. He said [to the commander], “This man is a Roman [citizen] (Surely you would not [command us to whip him]!/Do you really want [us to whip him]?) [RHQ]”
27 O comandante [ficou surpreso ao ouvir isso. Ele mesmo ]entrou [no quartel ]e disse a Paulo: “Diga-me, você é realmente [cidadão ]romano?” Paulo respondeu: “[Sou], sim”.
The commander [was surprised when he heard that. He himself] went [into the barracks] and said to Paul, “Tell me, are you [(sg) really] a Roman [citizen]?” Paul answered, “Yes, I [am].”
28 Então o comandante disse: “[Eu também sou cidadão romano]. Paguei um bom dinheiro para me tornar cidadão [romano”. ]Paulo disse: “Mas eu nasci cidadão [romano, ]portanto [não precisei pagar nada”. ]
Then the commander said, “[I am also a Roman citizen]. I paid a lot of money to become a [Roman] citizen.” Paul said, “But I was born a [Roman] citizen, [so I did not need to pay anything].”
29 Os soldados [estavam para chicotear Paulo e interrogá-lo sobre aquilo que ele tinha feito. Mas ao ouvirem o que Paulo disse, eles ]o deixaram imediatamente. O comandante também teve medo, pois se deu conta de que Paulo era [cidadão ]romano, e que ele tinha [mandado ilegalmente que os soldados ]amarrassem as mãos de Paulo.
The soldiers [were about to whip Paul and to ask him questions about what he had done. But when they heard what Paul said, they] left him immediately. The commander also became afraid, because he realized that Paul was a Roman [citizen] and that he had [illegally commanded soldiers to] tie up Paul’s [hands].
30 [O comandante ainda ]desejava se certificar precisamente do porquê de Paulo ser acusado pelos judeus {por que os judeus estavam acusando Paulo}. Portanto no dia seguinte, ele [mandou os soldados ]soltarem Paulo. Também convocou uma reunião dos principais sacerdotes e [outros membros do ]Conselho [Judaico. ]Então escoltou Paulo [ao local onde o Conselho se reunia ]e mandou que ele se apresentasse diante deles.
[The commander still] wanted to know exactly why the Jews were accusing Paul. So the next day he [told the soldiers to] take the chains off Paul. He also summoned the chief priests and the [other Jewish] Council [members]. Then he took Paul [to where the Council was meeting] and [commanded] him to stand before them.
