Gênesis 38

1 E aconteceu no mesmo tempo que Judá desceu de entre seus irmãos, e entrou na casa dum varão de Adullam, cujo nome era Hirah,

It came about at that time that Judah left his brothers and stayed with a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah.

2 E viu Judá ali a filha dum varão cananeu, cujo nome era Shuah; e tomou-a, e entrou a ela.

He met there a daughter of a Canaanite man whose name was Shua. He married her and slept with her.

3 E ela concebeu, e pariu um filho, e chamou o seu nome Er;

She became pregnant and had a son. He was named Er.

4 E tornou a conceber, e pariu um filho, e chamou o seu nome Onan;

She became pregnant again and had a son. She called his name Onan.

5 E continuou ainda, e pariu um filho, e chamou o seu nome Selah; e ele estava em Chezib, quando ela o pariu.

She again had a son and called his name Shelah. It was at Kezib where she gave birth to him.

6 Judá pois tomou uma mulher para Er, o seu primogênito, e o seu nome era Tamar.

Judah found a wife for Er, his firstborn. Her name was Tamar.

7 Er, porém, o primogênito de Judá, era mau aos olhos do Senhor, pelo que o Senhor o matou.

Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of Yahweh. Yahweh killed him.

8 Então disse Judá a Onan: Entra à mulher do teu irmão, e casa-te com ela, e suscita semente a teu irmão.

Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother's wife. Do the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up a child for your brother.”

9 Onan, porém, soube que esta semente não havia de ser para ele; e aconteceu que, quando entrava à mulher de seu irmão, derramava-a na terra, para não dar semente a seu irmão.

Onan knew that the child would not be his. Whenever he slept with his brother's wife, he spilled the semen on the ground so he would not have a child for his brother.

10 E o que fazia era mau aos olhos do Senhor, pelo que também o matou.

What he did was evil in the sight of Yahweh. Yahweh killed him also.

11 Então disse Judá a Tamar sua nora: Fica-te viúva na casa de teu pai, até que Selah, meu filho, seja grande. Porquanto disse: Para que porventura não morra também este, como seus irmãos. Assim foi-se Tamar, e ficou-se na casa de seu pai.

Then Judah said to Tamar, his daughter-in-law, “Remain a widow in your father's house until Shelah, my son, grows up.” For he feared, “He might also die, just like his brothers.” Tamar left and lived in her father's house.

12 Passando-se pois muitos dias, morreu a filha de Shuah, mulher de Judá; e depois se consolou Judá, e subiu aos tosquiadores das suas ovelhas em Timnah, ele e Hirah seu amigo, o adullamita.

After a long time, Shua's daughter, the wife of Judah, died. Judah was comforted and went up to his sheepshearers at Timnah, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite.

13 E deram aviso a Tamar, dizendo: Eis que o teu sogro sobe a Timnah, a tosquiar as suas ovelhas.

Tamar was told, “Look, your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep.”

14 Então ela tirou de sobre si os vestidos da sua viuvez, e cobriu-se com o véu, e envolveu-se, e assentou-se à entrada das duas fontes que estão no caminho de Timnah, porque via que Selah já era grande, e ela lhe não fôra dada por mulher

She took off the clothing of her widowhood and covered herself with her veil and wrapped herself. She sat in the gate of Enaim, which is by the road to Timnah. For she saw that Shelah had grown up but she had not been given to him as a wife.

15 E vendo-a Judá, teve-a por uma prostituta; porque ela tinha coberto o seu rosto.

When Judah saw her he thought that she was a prostitute because she had covered her face.

16 E apartou-se a ela ao caminho, e disse: Vem, peço-te, deixa-me entrar a ti. Porquanto não sabia que era sua nora: e ela disse: Que darás, para que entres a mim

He went to her by the road and said, “Come, please let me sleep with you”—for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law—and she said, “What will you give me so you can sleep with me?”

17 E ele disse: Eu te enviarei um cabrito do rebanho. E ela disse: das-me penhor até que o envies?

He said, “I will send you a young goat from the flock.” She said, “Will you give me a pledge until you send it?”

18 Então ele disse: Que penhor é que te darei? E ela disse: O teu selo, e o teu lenço, e o cajado que está em tua mão. O que ele lhe deu, e entrou a ela, e ela concebeu dele.

He said, “What pledge can I give you?” She replied, “Your seal and cord, and the staff that is in your hand.” He gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

19 E ela levantou-se, e foi-se, e tirou de sobre si o seu véu, e vestiu os vestidos da sua viuvez.

She got up and went away. She took off her veil and put on the clothing of her widowhood.

20 E Judá enviou o cabrito por mão do seu amigo o adullamita, para tomar o penhor da mão da mulher, porém não a achou.

Judah sent the young goat by his friend the Adullamite in order that he might receive the pledge back from the woman's hand, but he did not find her.

21 E perguntou aos homens daquele lugar, dizendo: Onde está a prostituta que estava no caminho junto às duas fontes? E disseram: Aqui não esteve prostituta alguma.

Then the Adullamite asked the men of the place, “Where is the cultic prostitute who was at Enaim by the road?” They said, “There has not been a cultic prostitute here.”

22 E tornou-se a Judá, e disse: Não a achei; e também disseram os homens daquele lugar: Aqui não esteve prostituta.

He returned to Judah and said, “I did not find her. Also, the men of the place said, 'There has not been a cultic prostitute here.'”

23 Então disse Judá: Tome-o para si, para que porventura não venhamos em desprezo; eis que tenho enviado este cabrito; mas tu não a achaste.

Judah said, “Let her keep the things, that we not be put to shame. Indeed, I sent this young goat, but you did not find her.”

24 E aconteceu que, quase três meses depois, deram aviso a Judá, dizendo: Tamar, tua nora, tem fornicado, e eis que está pejada da fornicação. Então disse Judá: tirai-a fora para que seja queimada.

It came about after about three months that it was told to Judah, “Tamar your daughter-in-law has committed prostitution, and indeed, she is pregnant by it.” Judah said, “Bring her here and let her be burned.”

25 E tirando-a fora, ela mandou dizer a seu sogro: Do varão de quem são estas coisas eu concebi. E ela disse mais: Conhece, peço-te, de quem é este selo, e estes lenços e este cajado.

When she was brought out, she sent to her father-in-law a message, “By the man who owns these I am pregnant.” She said, “Determine please whose these are, the seal and cords and staff.”

26 E conheceu-os Judá, e disse: Mais justa é ela do que eu. porquanto não a tenho dado a Selah meu filho. E nunca mais a conheceu.

Judah recognized them and said, “She is more righteous than I am, since I did not give her as a wife to Shelah, my son.” He did not sleep with her again.

27 E aconteceu ao tempo de parir, eis que havia gêmeos em seu ventre;

It came about at the time for her to give birth that, behold, twins were in her womb.

28 E aconteceu que, parindo ela, que um pôs fora a mão, e a parteira tomou-a, e atou em sua mão um fio de grã, dizendo: Este saiu primeiro.

It came about as she was giving birth one put out a hand, and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his hand and said, “This one came out first.”

29 Mas aconteceu que, tornando ele a recolher a sua mão, eis que saiu o seu irmão, e ela disse: Como tu tens rompido? sobre ti é a rotura. E chamaram o seu nome Perez;

But then he drew back his hand, and, behold, his brother came out first. The midwife said, “How you have broken out!” So he was named Perez.

30 E depois saiu o seu irmão, em cuja mão estava o fio de grã; e chamaram o seu nome Zerah.

Then his brother came out, who had the scarlet thread upon his hand, and he was named Zerah.
