2 Samuel 18
1 E David contou o povo que tinha comsigo, e poz sobre elles capitães de cento.
David numbered the people who were with him, and set captains of thousands and captains of hundreds over them.
2 E David enviou o povo, um terço debaixo da mão de Joab, e outro terço debaixo da mão de Abisai, filho de Zeruia, irmão de Joab, e outro terço debaixo da mão de Ittai, o getheo; e disse o rei ao povo: Eu tambem juntamente sairei comvosco.
David sent forth the people, a third part under the hand of Joab, and a third part under the hand of Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab's brother, and a third part under the hand of Ittai the Gittite. The king said to the people, "I will surely go forth with you myself also."
3 Porém o povo disse: Não sairás, porque, se formos obrigados a fugir, não porão o coração em nós; e, ainda que metade de nós morra, não porão o coração em nós, porque ainda, taes como nós somos, ajuntarás dez mil: melhor será pois que da cidade nos sirvas de soccorro.
But the people said, "You must not go out, for if we retreat, no one will care about us. If half of us die, no one will care about us. But you are worth ten thousand of us. Therefore it is better now if you support us in the city."
4 Então David lhes disse: O que bem parecer aos vossos olhos, farei. E o rei se poz da banda da porta e todo o povo saiu em centenas e em milhares.
The king said to them, "I will do what seems best to you." The king stood beside the gate, and all the people went out by hundreds and by thousands.
5 E o rei deu ordem a Joab, e a Abisai, e a Ittai, dizendo: Brandamente tratae por amor de mim ao mancebo, a Absalão. E todo o povo ouviu quando o rei deu ordem a todos os capitães ácerca de Absalão.
The king commanded Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man, even with Absalom." And all the people were listening when the king commanded all the captains concerning Absalom.
6 Saiu pois o povo ao campo, a encontrar-se com Israel, e deu-se a batalha no bosque d'Ephraim.
So the people went out into the field against Israel: and the battle was in the forest of Ephraim.
7 E ali foi ferido o povo d'Israel, diante dos servos de David: e n'aquelle mesmo dia houve ali uma grande derrota de vinte mil.
The people of Israel were struck there before the servants of David, and there was a great slaughter there that day of twenty thousand men.
8 Porque ali se derramou a batalha sobre a face de toda aquella terra; e foram mais os do povo que consumiu o bosque do que os que a espada consumiu n'aquelle dia.
For the battle there spread over the entire region, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured.
9 E Absalão se encontrou com os servos de David; e Absalão ia montado n'um mulo; e, entrando o mulo debaixo da espessura doe ramos d'um grande carvalho, pegou-se-lhe a cabeça no carvalho, e ficou pendurado entre o céu e a terra: e o mulo, que estava debaixo d'elle, passou adiante.
And Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. And he was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick boughs of a great oak, and his head caught hold of the oak, and he was left hanging between the sky and earth; and the mule that was under him went on.
10 O que vendo um homem, o fez saber a Joab, e disse: Eis que vi a Absalão pendurado d'um carvalho.
And a certain man saw it, and told Joab, and said, "Look, I saw Absalom hanging in an oak."
11 Então disse Joab ao homem que lh'o fizera saber: Pois que o viste, porque o não feriste logo ali em terra? E forçoso seria o eu dar-te dez moedas de prata e um cinto.
Joab said to the man who told him, "Look, you saw it, and why did you not strike him there to the ground? I would have given you ten pieces of silver, and a belt."
12 Disse porém aquelle homem a Joab: Ainda que eu podesse pesar nas minhas mãos mil moedas de prata, não estenderia a minha mão contra o filho do rei, pois bem ouvimos que o rei te deu ordem a ti, e a Abisai, e a Ittai, dizendo: Guardae, cada um de vós, de tocar ao mancebo, a Absalão.
The man said to Joab, "Though I should receive a thousand pieces of silver in my hand, I still wouldn't put forth my hand against the king's son; for in our hearing the king commanded you and Abishai and Ittai, saying, 'Protect the young man Absalom for my sake.'
13 Ainda que commettesse mentira a risco da minha vida, nem por isso coisa nenhuma se esconderia ao rei; e tu mesmo te opporias.
Otherwise if I had dealt falsely against his life (and there is no matter hidden from the king), then you yourself would have set yourself against me."
14 Então disse Joab: Não me demorarei assim comtigo aqui. E tomou tres dardos, e traspassou com elles o coração de Absalão, estando elle ainda vivo no meio do carvalho.
Then Joab said, "I'm not going to wait like this with you." He took three darts in his hand, and thrust them through the heart of Absalom, while he was yet alive in the midst of the oak.
15 E o cercaram dez mancebos, que levavam as armas de Joab. E feriram a Absalão, e o mataram.
Ten young men who bore Joab's armor surrounded and struck Absalom, and killed him.
16 Então tocou Joab a buzina, e voltou o povo de perseguir a Israel, porque Joab deteve o povo.
Joab blew the trumpet, and the people returned from pursuing after Israel; for Joab held back the people.
17 E tomaram a Absalão, e o lançaram no bosque, n'uma grande cova, e levantaram sobre elle um mui grande montão de pedras: e todo o Israel fugiu, cada um para a sua tenda.
They took Absalom, and cast him into the great pit in the forest, and raised over him a very great heap of stones. Then all Israel fled everyone to his tent.
18 Ora Absalão, quando ainda vivia, tinha tomado e levantado para si uma columna, que está no valle do rei, porque dizia: Filho nenhum tenho para conservar a memoria do meu nome. E chamou aquella columna pelo seu proprio. nome; pelo que até ao dia d'hoje se chama o Pilar d'Absalão.
Now Absalom in his lifetime had taken and reared up for himself the pillar, which is in the King's Valley; for he said, "I have no son to keep my name in memory." He called the pillar after his own name; and it is called Absalom's monument, to this day.
19 Então disse Ahimaas, filho de Zadok: Deixa-me correr, e denunciarei ao rei que já o Senhor o vingou da mão de seus inimigos.
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, "Let me now run, and bear the king news, how that the LORD has avenged him of his enemies."
20 Mas Joab lhe disse: Tu não serás hoje o portador de novas, porém outro dia as levarás; mas hoje não darás a nova, porque é morto o filho do rei
Joab said to him, "You shall not be the bearer of news this day, but you shall bear news another day. But today you shall bear no news, because the king's son is dead."
21 E disse Joab a Cusi: Vae tu, e dize ao rei o que viste. E Cusi se inclinou a Joab, e correu.
Then Joab said to the Cushite, "Go, tell the king what you have seen." The Cushite bowed himself to Joab, and ran.
22 E proseguiu Ahimaas, filho de Zadok, e disse a Joab: Seja o que fôr, deixa-me tambem correr após Cusi. E disse Joab: Para que agora correrias tu, meu filho, pois não tens mensagem conveniente?
Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said yet again to Joab, "But come what may, please let me also run after the Cushite." Joab said, "Why do you want to run, my son, since that you will have no reward for the news?"
23 Seja o que fôr, disse Ahimaas, correrei. E Joab lhe disse: Corre. E Ahimaas correu pelo caminho da planicie, e passou a Cusi.
And he said, "But come what may, I will run." He said to him, "Run." Then Ahimaaz ran by the way of the Plain, and outran the Cushite.
24 E David estava assentado entre as duas portas; e a sentinella subiu ao terraço da porta junto ao muro: e levantou os olhos, e olhou, e eis que um homem corria só.
Now David was sitting between the two gates, and the watchman went up to the roof of the gate to the wall and lifted up his eyes and looked and saw a man was running alone towards him.
25 Gritou pois a sentinella, e o disse ao rei: Se vem só, ha novas em sua bocca. E vinha andando e chegando.
And the watchman called out, and told the king. And the king said, "If he is alone, there is good news in his mouth." And he came closer and closer.
26 Então viu a sentinella outro homem que corria, e a sentinella gritou ao porteiro, e disse: Eis que lá vem outro homem correndo só. Então disse o rei: Tambem traz este novas.
And the watchman saw another man running. And the watchman above the gate called out, and said, "Look, another man running alone." And the king said, "He also brings good news."
27 Disse mais a sentinella: Vejo o correr do primeiro, que parece ser o correr de Ahimaas, filho de Zadok. Então disse o rei: Este é homem de bem, e virá com boas novas.
The watchman said, "I think the running of the first one is like the running of Ahimaaz the son of Zadok." The king said, "He is a good man, and comes with good news."
28 Gritou pois Ahimaas, e disse ao rei: Paz. E inclinou-se ao rei com o rosto em terra, e disse: Bemdito seja o Senhor, que entregou os homens que levantaram a mão contra o rei meu senhor.
And Ahimaaz came near and said to the king, "All is well." He bowed himself before the king with his face to the earth, and said, "Blessed is the LORD your God, who has delivered up the men who lifted up their hand against my lord the king."
29 Então disse o rei: Vae bem com o mancebo, com Absalão? E disse Ahimaas: Vi um grande alvoroço, quando Joab mandou o servo do rei, e a mim teu servo; porém não sei o que era.
The king said, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" And Ahimaaz answered, "When Joab, the king's servant, sent your servant off, I saw a great commotion, but I do not know what it was."
30 E disse o rei: Vira-te, e põe-te aqui. E virou-se, e parou.
The king said, "Turn aside, and stand here." He turned aside, and stood still.
31 E eis que vinha Cusi: e disse Cusi: Annunciar-se-ha ao rei meu senhor que hoje o Senhor te julgou da mão de todos os que se levantaram contra ti.
Look, the Cushite came. And he said, "News for my lord the king; for the LORD has avenged you this day of all those who rose up against you."
32 Então disse o rei a Cusi: Vae bem com o mancebo, com Absalão? E disse Cusi: Sejam como aquelle mancebo os inimigos do rei meu senhor, e todos os que se levantam contra ti para mal.
The king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" The Cushite answered, "May the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you to do you harm, be as that young man is."
33 Então o rei se perturbou, e subiu á sala que estava por cima da porta, e chorou: e andando, dizia assim: Meu filho Absalão, meu filho, meu filho, Absalão! quem me dera que eu morrera por ti, Absalão, meu filho, meu filho!
The king was much moved, and went up to the room over the gate, and wept. As he went, he said, "My son Absalom. My son, my son Absalom. I wish I had died for you, Absalom, my son, my son."
