1 Niech niewielu z was zostaje nauczycielami, moi bracia, gdyż wiecie, że czeka nas surowszy sąd.
Be not many teachers, my brethren, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment.
2 Wszyscy bowiem w wielu [sprawach] upadamy. Jeśli ktoś nie upada w mowie, jest człowiekiem doskonałym, który też może utrzymać na wodzy całe ciało.
For we all often offend. If any one offend not in word, he [is] a perfect man, able to bridle the whole body too.
3 Oto koniom wkładamy wędzidła do pysków, aby były nam posłuszne, i kierujemy całym ich ciałem.
Behold, we put the bits in the mouths of the horses, that they may obey us, and we turn round their whole bodies.
4 Podobnie i statki, choć są tak wielkie i pędzone gwałtownymi wichrami, jednak za pomocą niewielkiego steru są kierowane tam, dokąd chce sternik.
Behold also the ships, which are so great, and driven by violent winds, are turned about by a very small rudder, wherever the pleasure of the helmsman will.
5 Tak też język jest małym organem, lecz bardzo się przechwala. Jakże wielki las zapala mały ogień!
Thus also the tongue is a little member, and boasts great things. See how little a fire, how large a wood it kindles!
6 Język też [jest] ogniem i światem nieprawości. Język jest tak ułożony wśród naszych członków, że kala całe ciało i rozpala bieg życia, i jest zapalony przez ogień piekielny. (Geenna g1067)
and the tongue [is] fire, the world of unrighteousness; the tongue is set in our members, the defiler of the whole body, and which sets fire to the course of nature, and is set on fire of hell. (Geenna g1067)
7 Wszelki bowiem rodzaj dzikich zwierząt, ptaków, gadów i morskich [stworzeń] można ujarzmić i zostaje ujarzmiony przez człowieka.
For every species both of beasts and of birds, both of creeping things and of sea animals, is tamed and has been tamed by the human species;
8 Natomiast nikt z ludzi nie może ujarzmić języka. Jest to nieokiełznane zło, pełne śmiercionośnego jadu.
but the tongue can no one among men tame; [it is] an unsettled evil, full of death-bringing poison.
9 Nim błogosławimy Boga i Ojca i nim przeklinamy ludzi stworzonych na podobieństwo Boga.
Therewith bless we the Lord and Father, and therewith curse we men made after [the] likeness of God.
10 Z tych samych ust wychodzi błogosławieństwo i przekleństwo. Tak być nie powinno, moi bracia.
Out of the same mouth goes forth blessing and cursing. It is not right, my brethren, that these things should be thus.
11 Czy źródło z tej samej szczeliny tryska [wodą] słodką i gorzką?
Does the fountain, out of the same opening, pour forth sweet and bitter?
12 Czy może, moi bracia, drzewo figowe rodzić oliwki albo winorośl figi? Tak też żadne źródło nie może wydać słonej i słodkiej wody.
Can, my brethren, a fig produce olives, or a vine figs? Neither [can] salt [water] make sweet water.
13 Kto wśród was jest mądry i rozumny? Niech pokaże dobrym postępowaniem swoje uczynki z łagodnością [właściwą] mądrości.
Who [is] wise and understanding among you; let him shew out of a good conversation his works in meekness of wisdom;
14 Jeśli jednak macie w waszym sercu gorzką zazdrość i kłótliwość, to nie przechwalajcie się i nie kłamcie wbrew prawdzie.
but if ye have bitter emulation and strife in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth.
15 Nie jest to mądrość zstępująca z góry, lecz ziemska, zmysłowa, diabelska.
This is not the wisdom which comes down from above, but earthly, natural, devilish.
16 Gdzie bowiem jest zazdrość i kłótliwość, tam [też] niepokój i wszelki zły czyn.
For where emulation and strife [are], there [is] disorder and every evil thing.
17 Mądrość zaś, która [jest] z góry, jest przede wszystkim czysta, następnie pokojowo usposobiona, łagodna, ustępliwa, pełna miłosierdzia i dobrych owoców, bezstronna i nieobłudna.
But the wisdom from above first is pure, then peaceful, gentle, yielding, full of mercy and good fruits, unquestioning, unfeigned.
18 A owoc sprawiedliwości jest siany w pokoju przez tych, którzy czynią pokój.
But [the] fruit of righteousness in peace is sown for them that make peace.
