امثال 24

۱ 1 بر مردان شریر حسد مبر، و آرزو مدارتا با ایشان معاشرت نمایی،

Be not thou envious of evil men, neither desire to be with them.

۲ 2 زیرا که دل ایشان در ظلم تفکر می‌کند ولبهای ایشان درباره مشقت تکلم می‌نماید.

For their heart studieth destruction, and their lips talk of mischief.

۳ 3 خانه به حکمت بنا می‌شود، و با فطانت استوار می‌گردد،

Through wisdom is a house builded; and by understanding it is established;

۴ 4 و به معرفت اطاقها پر می‌شود، از هر گونه اموال گرانبها و نفایس.

And by knowledge are the chambers filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

۵ 5 مرد حکیم در قدرت می‌ماند، و صاحب معرفت در توانایی ترقی می‌کند،

A wise man is strong; yea, a man of knowledge increaseth strength.

۶ 6 زیرا که با حسن تدبیر باید جنگ بکنی، و ازکثرت مشورت دهندگان نصرت است.

For with wise advice thou shalt make thy war; and in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.

۷ 7 حکمت برای احمق زیاده بلند است، دهان خود را در دربار باز نمی کند.

Wisdom is as unattainable to a fool as corals; he openeth not his mouth in the gate.

۸ 8 هر‌که برای بدی تفکر می‌کند، او را فتنه انگیزمی گویند.

He that deviseth to do evil, men shall call him a mischievous person.

۹ 9 فکر احمقان گناه است، و استهزاکننده نزد آدمیان مکروه است.

The thought of foolishness is sin; and the scorner is an abomination to men.

۱۰ 10 اگر در روز تنگی سستی نمایی، قوت توتنگ می‌شود.

If thou faint in the day of adversity, thy strength is small indeed.

۱۱ 11 آنانی را که برای موت برده شوند خلاص کن، و از رهانیدن آنانی که برای قتل مهیااندکوتاهی منما.

Deliver them that are drawn unto death; and those that are ready to be slain wilt thou forbear to rescue?

۱۲ 12 اگر گویی که این را ندانستیم، آیا آزماینده دلها نمی فهمد؟ و حافظ جان تو نمی داند؟ و به هرکس برحسب اعمالش مکافات نخواهد داد؟

If thou sayest: 'Behold, we knew not this', doth not He that weigheth the hearts consider it? And He that keepeth thy soul, doth not He know it? And shall not He render to every man according to his works?

۱۳ 13 ‌ای پسر من عسل را بخور زیرا که خوب است، و‌شان عسل را چونکه به کامت شیرین است.

My son, eat thou honey, for it is good, and the honeycomb is sweet to thy taste;

۱۴ 14 همچنین حکمت را برای جان خود بیاموز، اگر آن را بیابی آنگاه اجرت خواهد بود، و امید تومنقطع نخواهد شد.

So know thou wisdom to be unto thy soul; if thou hast found it, then shall there be a future, and thy hope shall not be cut off.

۱۵ 15 ‌ای شریر برای منزل مرد عادل در کمین مباش، و آرامگاه او را خراب مکن،

Lie not in wait, O wicked man, against the dwelling of the righteous, spoil not his resting-place;

۱۶ 16 زیرا مرد عادل اگر‌چه هفت مرتبه بیفتدخواهد برخاست، اما شریران در بلا خواهندافتاد.

For a righteous man falleth seven times, and riseth up again, but the wicked stumble under adversity.

۱۷ 17 چون دشمنت بیفتد شادی مکن، و چون بلغزد دلت وجد ننماید،

Rejoice not when thine enemy falleth, and let not thy heart be glad when he stumbleth;

۱۸ 18 مبادا خداوند این را ببیند و در نظرش ناپسند آید، و غضب خود را از او برگرداند.

Lest the LORD see it, and it displease Him, and He turn away His wrath from him.

۱۹ 19 خویشتن را به‌سبب بدکاران رنجیده مساز، و بر شریران حسد مبر،

Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious at the wicked;

۲۰ 20 زیرا که به جهت بدکاران اجر نخواهد بود، و چراغ شریران خاموش خواهد گردید.

For there will be no future to the evil man, the lamp of the wicked shall be put out.

۲۱ 21 ‌ای پسر من از خداوند و پادشاه بترس، و بامفسدان معاشرت منما،

My son, fear thou the LORD and the king, and meddle not with them that are given to change;

۲۲ 22 زیرا که مصیبت ایشان ناگهان خواهدبرخاست، و عاقبت سالهای ایشان را کیست که بداند؟

For their calamity shall rise suddenly; and who knoweth the ruin from them both?

۲۳ 23 اینها نیز از (سخنان ) حکیمان است طرفداری در داوری نیکو نیست.

These also are sayings of the wise. To have respect of persons in judgment is not good.

۲۴ 24 کسی‌که به شریر بگوید تو عادل هستی، امت‌ها او را لعنت خواهند کرد و طوایف از اونفرت خواهند نمود.

He that saith unto the wicked: 'Thou art righteous', peoples shall curse him, nations shall execrate him;

۲۵ 25 اما برای آنانی که او را توبیخ نمایندشادمانی خواهد بود، و برکت نیکو به ایشان خواهد رسید.

But to them that decide justly shall be delight, and a good blessing shall come upon them.

۲۶ 26 آنکه به کلام راست جواب گوید لبها رامی بوسد.

He kisseth the lips that giveth a right answer.

۲۷ 27 کار خود را در خارج آراسته کن، و آن را درملک مهیا ساز، و بعد از آن خانه خویش را بنا نما.

Prepare thy work without, and make it fit for thyself in the field; and afterwards build thy house.

۲۸ 28 بر همسایه خود بی‌جهت شهادت مده، و بالبهای خود فریب مده،

Be not a witness against thy neighbour without cause; and deceive not with thy lips.

۲۹ 29 و مگو به طوری که او به من عمل کرد من نیزبا وی عمل خواهم نمود، و مرد را بر‌حسب اعمالش پاداش خواهم داد.

Say not: 'I will do so to him as he hath done to me; I will render to the man according to his work.'

۳۰ 30 از مزرعه مرد کاهل، و از تاکستان شخص ناقص العقل گذشتم.

I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;

۳۱ 31 و اینک بر تمامی آن خارها می‌رویید، وخس تمامی روی آن را می‌پوشانید، و دیوارسنگیش خراب شده بود،

And, lo, it was all grown over with thistles, the face thereof was covered with nettles, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.

۳۲ 32 پس من نگریسته متفکر شدم، ملاحظه کردم و ادب آموختم.

Then I beheld, and considered well; I saw, and received instruction.

۳۳ 33 اندکی خفت و اندکی خواب، و اندکی بر هم نهادن دستها به جهت خواب.

'Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep' —

۳۴ 34 پس فقر تو مثل راهزن بر تو خواهد آمد، ونیازمندی تو مانند مرد مسلح.

So shall thy poverty come as a runner, and thy want as an armed man.
