ਉਪਦੇਸ਼ਕ 4

1 ੧ ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਫੇਰ ਮੁੜ ਕੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਹਨੇਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਜੋ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਵੇਖੋ ਸਤਾਇਆਂ ਹੋਇਆਂ ਦੇ ਹੰਝੂ ਵਗਦੇ ਸਨ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੀ ਅਤੇ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਹਨੇਰ ਕਰਨ ਵਾਲੇ ਬਲਵੰਤ ਸਨ ਪਰ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਦਿਲਾਸਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੋਈ ਨਾ ਰਿਹਾ।

So I returned, and saw all the oppressions that were done under the sun: and behold the tear of the oppressed, and they had no comforter; and on the side of them that oppressed them was power; but they had no comforter:

2 ੨ ਇਸ ਲਈ ਮੈਂ ਮੁਰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਜੋ ਪਹਿਲਾਂ ਮਰ ਚੁੱਕੇ ਸਨ, ਉਹਨਾਂ ਜੀਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਜੋ ਹੁਣ ਜੀਉਂਦੇ ਹਨ, ਸਰਾਹੁਣਾ ਕੀਤੀ

and I praised all the dead that had already died more than the living, as many as are alive until now.

3 ੩ ਪਰ ਦੋਹਾਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਜ਼ਿਆਦਾ ਚੰਗਾ ਉਹ ਹੈ ਜੋ ਅਜੇ ਹੋਇਆ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ, ਜਿਸ ਨੇ ਹੁਣੇ ਤੱਕ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਦਾ ਭੈੜਾ ਕੰਮ ਨਹੀਂ ਵੇਖਿਆ।

Better also than both these is he who has not yet been, who has not seen all the evil work that is done under the sun.

4 ੪ ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਅਤੇ ਸਾਰੀ ਕਾਮਯਾਬੀ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ, ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਦੀ ਆਪਣੇ ਗੁਆਂਢੀ ਨਾਲ ਈਰਖਾ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ। ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਦਾ ਫੱਕਣਾ ਹੈ।

And I saw all labour, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbour. This is also vanity and waywardness of spirit.

5 ੫ ਮੂਰਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਹੱਥ ਉੱਤੇ ਹੱਥ ਰੱਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ ।

The fool folds his hands together, and eats his own flesh.

6 ੬ ਸੁੱਖ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਮੁੱਠੀ ਭਰ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੋ ਮੁੱਠੀਆਂ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਦਾ ਫੱਕਣਾ ਹੋਵੇ।

Better is a handful of rest than two handfuls of trouble and waywardness of spirit.

7 ੭ ਤਦ ਮੈਂ ਫੇਰ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਨੂੰ ਵੇਖਿਆ,

So I returned, and saw vanity under the sun.

8 ੮ ਕੋਈ ਤਾਂ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ, ਨਾ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਪੁੱਤਰ ਹੈ ਨਾ ਭਰਾ, ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਸਾਰੇ ਧੰਦੇ ਦਾ ਅੰਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਅੱਖ ਧਨ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਰੱਜਦੀ, ਨਾ ਹੀ ਉਹ ਆਖਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਮੈਂ ਕਿਸ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਕਰਦਾ ਹਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਆਪਣੀ ਜਿੰਦ ਦੇ ਸੁੱਖ ਨੂੰ ਗੁਆਉਂਦਾ ਹਾਂ? ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਬੁਰਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਹੈ।

There is one [alone], and there is not a second; yes, he has neither son nor brother: yet there is no end to all his labour; neither is his eye satisfied with wealth; and for whom do I labour, and deprive my soul of good? this is also vanity, and an evil trouble.

9 ੯ ਇੱਕ ਨਾਲੋਂ ਦੋ ਚੰਗੇ ਹਨ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਮਿਹਨਤ ਤੋਂ ਚੰਗਾ ਫਲ ਮਿਲਦਾ ਹੈ,

Two [are] better than one, [seeing] they have a good reward for their labour.

10 ੧੦ ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜੇ ਉਹ ਡਿੱਗ ਪੈਣ ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਜਣਾ ਦੂਜੇ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਕੇਗਾ, ਪਰ ਹਾਏ ਉਹ ਦੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਡਿੱਗਦਾ ਹੈ, ਕਿਉਂ ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਲਈ ਕੋਈ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਜੋ ਉਹ ਨੂੰ ਚੁੱਕ ਕੇ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਕਰੇ!

For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falls, and there is not a second to lift him up.

11 ੧੧ ਫੇਰ ਜੇ ਦੋ ਇਕੱਠੇ ਲੰਮੇ ਪੈਣ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਗਰਮ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ ਪਰ ਇਕੱਲਾ ਕਿਸ ਤਰ੍ਹਾਂ ਗਰਮ ਹੋ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ?

Also if two should lie together, they also get heat: but how shall one be warmed [alone?]

12 ੧੨ ਜੇ ਕੋਈ ਇੱਕ ਉੱਤੇ ਭਾਰੀ ਪੈ ਜਾਵੇ ਤਾਂ ਉਹ ਦੋਵੇਂ ਉਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਹਮਣਾ ਕਰ ਸਕਦੇ ਹਨ ਅਤੇ ਤੇਹਰੀ ਰੱਸੀ ਛੇਤੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਟੁੱਟਦੀ।

And if one should prevail against [him], the two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord shall not be quickly broken.

13 ੧੩ ਇੱਕ ਬੁੱਢੇ ਅਤੇ ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਜਾ ਨਾਲੋਂ, ਜੋ ਸਿੱਖਿਆ ਦੀ ਸਹਾਰਨਾ ਕਰਨਾ ਨਾ ਜਾਣੇ, ਇੱਕ ਦੀਨ ਪਰ ਬੁੱਧਵਾਨ ਜੁਆਨ ਚੰਗਾ ਹੈ,

Better is a poor and wise child than an old and foolish king, who knows not how to take heed any longer.

14 ੧੪ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਉਹ ਕੈਦਖ਼ਾਨੇ ਦੇ ਵਿੱਚੋਂ ਨਿੱਕਲ ਕੇ ਰਾਜ ਕਰਨ ਆਇਆ ਹੋਵੇ ਜਾਂ ਰਾਜ ਵਿੱਚ ਗਰੀਬ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਸੀ।

For he shall come forth out of the house of the prisoners to reign, because [he] also that was in his kingdom has become poor.

15 ੧੫ ਮੈਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਉਂਦਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜੋ ਸੂਰਜ ਦੇ ਹੇਠ ਤੁਰਦੇ ਹਨ ਵੇਖਿਆ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਦੂਜੇ ਜੁਆਨ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਗਏ, ਜੋ ਉਸ ਦੀ ਥਾਂ ਲੈਣ ਲਈ ਖੜ੍ਹਾ ਹੋਇਆ।

I saw all the living who were walking under the sun, with the second youth who shall stand up in each one's place.

16 ੧੬ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਸਾਰਿਆਂ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀ ਕੋਈ ਹੱਦ ਨਹੀਂ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਹੋਇਆ, ਤਾਂ ਵੀ ਜਿਹੜੇ ਉਸ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ ਹੋਣਗੇ, ਉਹ ਉਸ ਨਾਲ ਖੁਸ਼ ਨਾ ਹੋਣਗੇ। ਸੱਚ-ਮੁੱਚ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਵਿਅਰਥ ਅਤੇ ਹਵਾ ਦਾ ਫੱਕਣਾ ਹੈ!

There is no end to all the people, to all who were before them: and the last shall not rejoice in him: for this also is vanity and waywardness of spirit.
