1 Ein salme til lærdom av ezrahiten Etan. Um Herrens miskunns verk vil eg æveleg syngja frå ætt til ætt vil eg med min munn forkynna hans truskap.
Maschil. Of Ethan the Ezrahite. My song will be of the mercies of the Lord for ever: with my mouth will I make his faith clear to all generations.
2 For eg segjer: Æveleg vert miskunn uppbygd, i himmelen gjer du din truskap fast.
For you have said, Mercy will be made strong for ever; my faith will be unchanging in the heavens.
3 «Eg hev gjort ei pakt med min utvalde, eg hev svore for David, tenaren min:
I have made an agreement with the man of my selection, I have made an oath to David my servant;
4 «Æveleg vil eg grunnfesta ditt avkjøme, og eg vil byggja din kongsstol frå ætt til ætt.»» (Sela)
I will make your seed go on for ever, your kingdom will be strong through all generations. (Selah)
5 Og himmelen prisar di undergjerning, Herre, og din truskap fær pris i samlingi av dei heilage.
In heaven let them give praise for your wonders, O Lord; and your unchanging faith among the saints.
6 For kven i dei høge skyer likjest Herren? Kven er lik Herren millom gudesøner?
For who is there in the heavens in comparison with the Lord? who is like the Lord among the sons of the gods?
7 Ein Gud som er ovskræmeleg i løynderådet til dei heilage, og til rædsla for alle som er ikring honom.
God is greatly to be feared among the saints, and to be honoured over all those who are about him.
8 Herre, allhers drott, kven er sterk som du, Herre? Og din truskap er kringum deg.
O Lord God of armies, who is strong like you, O Jah? and your unchanging faith is round about you.
9 Du råder yver havsens ovmod; når bylgjorne i det reiser seg, stiller du deim.
You have rule over the sea in storm; when its waves are troubled, you make them calm.
10 Du hev slege Rahab sund som ein ihelslegen, med din sterke arm hev du spreidt dine fiendar.
Rahab was crushed by you like one wounded to death; with your strong arm you put to flight all your haters.
11 Himmelen er din, og jordi er di; jordriket og alt som er i det, hev du grunnlagt.
Yours are the heavens, and the earth is yours; you have made the world, and everything which is in it.
12 Nord og sud hev du skapt; Tabor og Hermon fegnast i ditt namn.
You have made the north and the south; Tabor and Hermon are sounding with joy at your name.
13 Du hev ein arm med velde; sterk er di hand, høg er di høgre hand.
Yours is an arm of power; strong is your hand and high your right hand.
14 Rettferd og rett er grunnvoll for din kongsstol; miskunn og truskap gjeng fyre di åsyn.
The seat of your kingdom is resting on righteousness and right judging: mercy and good faith come before your face.
15 Sælt er det folk som kjenner til glederop; i ljoset frå ditt andlit skal dei ferdast.
Happy are the people who have knowledge of the holy cry: the light of your face, O Lord, will be shining on their way.
16 I ditt namn fegnast dei all dagen, og ved di rettferd vert dei upphøgde.
In your name will they have joy all the day: in your righteousness will they be lifted up.
17 For du er prydnaden i deira styrke, og ved din godhug lyfter du upp vårt horn.
For you are the glory of their strength; in your pleasure will our horn be lifted up.
18 For Herren høyrer vår skjold til, og vår konge til Israels Heilage.
For our breastplate is the Lord; and our king is the Holy One of Israel's.
19 Den gong tala du i ei syn til dine trugne og sagde: «Eg hev lagt hjelp i handi på ein veldug, eg hev upphøgt ein ungdom av folket.
Then your voice came to your holy one in a vision, saying, I have put the crown on a strong one, lifting up one taken from among the people.
20 Eg hev funne David, tenaren min, med min heilage olje hev eg salva honom.
I have made discovery of David my servant; I have put my holy oil on his head.
21 Mi hand skal alltid vera med honom, og min arm skal styrkja honom.
My hand will be his support; my arm will give him strength.
22 Fienden skal ikkje trengja honom, og den urettferdige skal ikkje kua honom.
The deceit of those who are against him will not overcome him; he will not be troubled by the sons of evil.
23 Men eg vil krasa hans motstandarar for hans åsyn, og slå deim som hatar honom.
I will have those who are against him broken before his face, and his haters will be crushed under my blows.
24 Og min truskap og mi miskunn skal vera med honom, og i mitt namn skal hans horn verta upplyft.
But my faith and my mercy will be with him; and in my name will his horn be lifted up.
25 Eg vil leggja hans hand på havet og hans høgre hand på elvarne.
I will put his hand in the sea, and his right hand in the rivers.
26 Han skal ropa til meg: «Du er min far, min Gud og mitt frelse-fjell!»
He will say to me, You are my father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.
27 Og eg vil setja honom til den fyrstefødde, til den høgste av kongarne på jordi.
And I will make him the first of my sons, most high over the kings of the earth.
28 Mi miskunn imot honom vil eg æveleg halda ved lag, og mi pakt skal standa fast for honom.
I will keep my mercy for him for ever; my agreement with him will not be changed.
29 Og eg vil halda uppe hans avkjøme til æveleg tid, og hans kongsstol so lenge himmelen varer.
His seed will keep their place for ever; his kingdom will be eternal, like the heavens.
30 Dersom hans born forlet mi lov og ikkje vandrar etter mine domar,
If his children give up my law, and are not ruled by my decisions;
31 dersom dei bryt mine bodord og ikkje held mine fyresegner,
If my rules are broken, and my orders are not kept;
32 då vil eg heimsøkja deira misgjerd med ris og deira skuld med plågor.
Then I will send punishment on them for their sin; my rod will be the reward of their evil-doing.
33 Men mi miskunn vil eg ikkje taka frå honom, og ikkje vil eg svika i min truskap.
But I will not take away my mercy from him, and will not be false to my faith.
34 Eg vil ikkje brjota mi pakt og ikkje brigda ordi frå mine lippor.
I will be true to my agreement; the things which have gone out of my lips will not be changed.
35 Eitt hev eg svore ved min heilagdom, sanneleg, for David vil eg ikkje ljuga.
I have made an oath once by my holy name, that I will not be false to David.
36 Hans avkjøme skal vera til æveleg tid, og hans kongsstol som soli for mi åsyn.
His seed will not come to an end for ever; the seat of his kingdom will be like the sun before me.
37 Som månen skal han standa æveleg, og vitnet i skyi er trufast.» (Sela)
It will be fixed for ever like the moon; and the witness in heaven is true. (Selah)
38 Og du hev støytt burt og forsmått, du hev vorte harm på den du hev salva.
But you have put him away in disgust; you have been angry with the king of your selection.
39 Du hev rist av deg pakti med din tenar, du hev skjemt hans kruna og kasta henne på jordi.
You have made your agreement with your servant of no effect: you have had no respect for his crown, it has come down even to the earth.
40 Du hev brote ned alle murarne hans, du hev gjort hans festningar til grusdungar.
All his walls are broken down; you have given his strong towers to destruction.
41 Alle som fer fram på vegen, plundrar honom, han hev vorte til spott for grannarne sine.
All those who come by take away his goods; he is laughed at by his neighbours.
42 Du hev upphøgt den høgre hand til hans motstandarar, du hev gjort alle hans fiendar glade.
You have given power to the right hand of his haters; you have made glad all those who are against him.
43 Du hev og late og hans sverdsegg vika, og hev ikkje halde honom uppe i striden.
His sword is turned back; you have not been his support in the fight.
44 Du hev gjort ende på hans glans og kasta hans kongsstol til jordi.
You have put an end to his glory: the seat of his kingdom has been levelled to the earth.
45 Du hev korta av hans ungdoms dagar, du hev lagt skam yver honom. (Sela)
You have made him old before his time; he is covered with shame. (Selah)
46 Kor lenge, Herre, vil du løyna deg æveleg? Kor lenge skal din harm brenna som eld?
How long, O Lord, will you Keep yourself for ever from our eyes? how long will your wrath be burning like fire?
47 Kom då i hug kor stutt mitt liv er, og kor forgjengelege du hev skapt alle menneskjeborn.
See how short my time is; why have you made all men for no purpose?
48 Kven fær vel liva og ikkje sjå dauden? Kven friar si sjæl frå helheims vald? (Sela) (Sheol h7585)
What man now living will not see death? will he be able to keep back his soul from the underworld? (Selah) (Sheol h7585)
49 Herre, kvar er dine nådegjerningar frå fordoms tid, som du med eid lova David i din truskap?
Lord, where are your earlier mercies? where is the oath which you made to David in unchanging faith?
50 Herre, kom i hug den skam som ligg yver dine tenarar, at eg må bera i fanget alle dei mange folk,
Keep in mind, O Lord, the shame of your servants, and how the bitter words of all the people have come into my heart;
51 at dine fiendar spottar, Herre, at dei spottar hans fotspor som du hev salva.
The bitter words of your haters, O Lord, shaming the footsteps of your king.
52 Lova vere Herren æveleg! Amen, amen!
Let the Lord be praised for ever. So be it, So be it.
