1 Til songmeisteren, etter «Vitnemålslilja»; ein miktam av David til å læra, då han stridde med syrarar frå Mesopotamia og syrarar frå Soba, og Joab kom att og slo tolv tusund edomitar i Saltdalen. Gud, du hev støytt oss burt, du hev rive oss sund, du hev vore vreid, kveik oss upp att!

When he was fighting against Aram-naharaim and Aramzobah, when Joab came back, and put twelve thousand of the Edomites to death, in the Valley of Salt. God, you have put us away from you, you have sent us in all directions, you have been angry; O be turned to us again.

2 Du hev fenge landet til å skjelva og rivna; bøt du bresterne, for det stend ikkje stødt!

By the power of your hand the earth is shaking and broken; make it strong again, for it is moved.

3 Du hev late ditt folk sjå harde ting, du hev skjenkt oss vin so me tumla.

You have made the people see hard times; you have given us the wine of shaking for our drink.

4 Men du hev gjeve deim som ottast deg eit merke til å hevja seg for sanning skuld. (Sela)

Give a safe place to those who have fear of you, where they may go in flight from before the bow. (Selah)

5 At dei du elskar må verta frelste, so hjelp oss no med di høgre hand, og bønhøyr oss!

So that your loved ones may be made safe, let your right hand be my salvation, and give me an answer.

6 Gud hev tala i sin heilagdom: «Eg vil gleda meg, eg vil skifta ut Sikem, og Sukkotdalen vil eg mæla.

God has said in his holy place, I will be glad: I will make a division of Shechem, and the valley of Succoth will be measured out.

7 Meg høyrer Gilead til, og meg høyrer Manasse til, og Efraim er verja for mitt hovud, Juda er min førarstav.

Gilead is mine, and Manasseh is mine; and Ephraim is the strength of my head; Judah is my law-giver;

8 Moab er mitt vaskarfat, på Edom kastar eg skoen min; ropa høgt for meg, du Filistarland!»

Moab is my washpot; over Edom will I put out my shoe; over Philistia will a glad cry be sounded.

9 Kven vil føra meg til den faste by? Kven leider meg til Edom?

Who will take me into the strong town? who will be my guide into Edom?

10 Hev ikkje du, Gud, støytt oss burt? og du, Gud, gjeng ikkje ut med våre herar?

Have not you put us away, O God? and you have not gone out with our armies.

11 Gjev oss hjelp imot fienden, for mannehjelp er fåfengd!

Give us help in our trouble; for there is no help in man.

12 Med Guds hjelp skal me gjera storverk, og han skal treda ned våre fiendar.

Through God we will do great things, for through him our haters will be crushed under our feet.
