Esras 4

1 Uvenerne til Juda og Benjamin fekk høyra at dei som var komne heim or utlægdi, heldt på å byggja eit tempel åt Herren, Israels Gud.

Now when the adversaries of Judah and Benjamin heard that the people from the exile were building a temple to YHWH, the God of Israel;

2 Då gjekk dei til Zerubbabel og til ættarhovdingarne og sagde: «Lat oss få vera med dykk og byggja; me held oss til dykkar Gud likso vel som de, og til honom hev me ofra alt sidan den tid Asarhaddon var konge i Assyria og førde oss hit.»

then they drew near to Zerubbabel, and to the heads of ancestral houses, and said to them, "Let us build with you; for we seek your God, as you do; and we sacrifice to him since the days of Esarhaddon king of Assyria, who brought us up here."

3 Men Zerubbabel og Jesua og dei andre ættarhovdingarne for Israel sagde til deim: «Det sømer seg ikkje at de skal vera med oss og byggja eit hus åt vår Gud; me vil sjølve hjelpast åt og byggja hus åt Herren, Israels Gud, soleis som Kyrus, persarkongen, hev sagt oss fyre.»

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the heads of ancestral houses of Israel, said to them, "You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves together will build to YHWH, the God of Israel, as king Koresh the king of Persia has commanded us."

4 Folket i landet skræmde då Juda-folket av og gjorde deim huglause, so dei slutta med byggjingi.

Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building,

5 Dei leigde folk til å leggja meinråder mot deim, og tiltaket vart stogga i all den tid som Kyrus var konge, alt til Darius hadde teke til å styra i Persia.

and hired counselors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Koresh king of Persia, even until the reign of Daryavesh king of Persia.

6 Då Ahasveros hadde vorte konge, i den fyrste tid han styrde, då skreiv dei brev og klaga på ibuarane i Juda og Jerusalem.

In the reign of Achashyerosh, in the beginning of his reign, they wrote an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

7 I Artahsastas tid skreiv Bislam og Mitredat og Tabe’el og dei andre embætsbrørne hans til Artahsasta, konge i Persia. Brevet var skrive med syrisk skrift og umsett på syrisk.

In the days of Artachshasta wrote Bishlam, Mithredath, Tabeel, and the rest of his companions, to Artachshasta king of Persia; and the writing of the letter was written in Aramaic, and set forth in the Aramaic language.

8 Rådsherren Rehum og skrivaren Simsai skreiv eit brev mot Jerusalem til kong Artahsasta, og innholdet var dette:

Rehum the chancellor and Shimshai the scribe wrote a letter against Jerusalem to Artachshasta the king as follows:

9 Dengong: Rådsherren Rehum og skrivaren Simsai og dei andre embetsbrørne deira, dei frå Dina og Afarsatka, Tarpela og Persia, Erek og Babel, Susan, Deha og Elam

[From] Rehum the commander, and Shimshai the scribe, and the rest of their companions, the Dinaites, and the Apharsathchites, the Tarpelites, the Apharsites, the Archevites, the Babylonians, the Shushanchites, the Dehaites, the Elamites,

10 og dei andre folki som den store og velduge Asnappar hadde ført burt og late bu i Samaria-byen og det andre landet på hi sida elvi, og so burtetter.

and the rest of the nations whom the great and noble Asnappar brought over, and set in the cities of Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River.

11 Dette er avskrift av det brevet dei sende til kong Artahsasta: «Tenarane dine, mennerne på hi sida elvi og so burtetter.

This is the copy of the letter that they sent to Artachshasta the king: Your servants the men beyond the River. And now,

12 Det skal kongen vita at dei jødarne som for ifrå deg og hit til oss, er no komne til Jerusalem, og der held dei på å byggja upp denne vonde uprørsbyen og setja murarne i stand og stella på grunnvollarne.

be it known to the king, that the Jews who came up from you have come to us to Jerusalem; they are building the rebellious and wicked city, and have finished the walls, and repaired the foundations.

13 No vil me gjera det kunnigt for kongen, at skal denne byen verta uppatt-bygd og murarne fullførde, so vil folket der korkje leggja skattar eller gjeva toll eller vegpengar, og det vil verta til meins for innkomorne åt kongarne.

Be it known now to the king that if this city is built, and the walls finished, they will not pay tribute, custom, or toll, and in the end it will be hurtful to the kings.

14 Sidan no me et salt frå kongsgarden, so sømer det seg ikkje at me skal sjå på den skaden som her vert lagd for kongen, difor sender me brev bod og let kongen vita dette,

Now because we eat the salt of the palace, and it is not appropriate for us to see the king's dishonor, therefore have we sent and informed the king;

15 so det kann verta etterset i sogeboki åt federne dine; der vil du sjå og læra at denne byen hev vore ein upprørsby frå gamalt, til stort mein for kongar og land, og at der hev vore skapt mykje uro; difor er og byen lagd i øyde.

that search may be made in the book of the records of your fathers: so you shall find in the book of the records, and know that this city is a rebellious city, and hurtful to kings and provinces, and that they have moved sedition within the same of old time; for which cause was this city laid waste.

16 Det let me kongen vita, at vert denne byen bygd upp og murane fullførde, då er det ute med landeigni di på andre sida elvi.»

We inform the king that, if this city be built, and the walls finished, by this means you shall have no portion beyond the River.

17 Kongen sende brev attende til rådsherren Rehum og skrivaren Simsai og dei andre embætsbrørne deira som budde i Samaria og andre herad på hi sida elvi, og i brevet stod det: «Heil og sæl! og so burtetter.

Then the king sent an answer to Rehum the chancellor, and to Shimshai the scribe, and to the rest of their companions who dwell in Samaria, and in the rest of the country beyond the River: Peace, and so forth.

18 Det brevet som de sende oss, hev vorte greinleg lese for meg.

The letter which you sent to us has been plainly read before me.

19 Eg let folk sjå etter, og dei fann ut at den byen alt frå dei eldste tider hev sett seg upp mot kongarne, og at uppreist og uro hev vore der rett som det var.

I decreed, and search has been made, and it is found that this city of old time has made insurrection against kings, and that rebellion and sedition have been made in it.

20 Velduge kongar hev butt i Jerusalem, og dei rådde yver alt landet på hi sida elvi, og dei tok imot skatt og toll og vegpengar.

There have been mighty kings also over Jerusalem, who have ruled over all the country beyond the River; and tribute, custom, and toll, was paid to them.

21 No lyt de skipa det so at desse folki ikkje fær halda på med arbeidet, og at byen ikkje skal verta uppbygd att, utan det skulde koma løyve frå meg.

Make a decree now to cause these men to cease, and that this city not be built, until a decree shall be made by me.

22 Og det lyt sjå vel til at ingenting vert gløymd eller forsømt i denne saki, so skaden ikkje skal verta verre og kongarne lida tap.»

Take heed that you not be slack herein: why should damage grow to the hurt of the kings?

23 So snart som dette brevet frå kong Artahsasta hadde vorte lese for Rehum og skrivaren Simsai og embætsbrørne deira, for dei snøgt til jødarne i Jerusalem og hindra dei med vald og magt.

Then when the copy of king Artachshasta's letter was read before Rehum, and Shimshai the scribe, and their companions, they went in haste to Jerusalem to the Jews, and made them to cease by force and power.

24 Då vart det stans med byggjingi på Guds hus i Jerusalem. Det vart ingenting gjort med dette fyrr Darius hadde vorte konge i Persia, det andre året han styrde.

Then ceased the work of God's house which is at Jerusalem; and it ceased until the second year of the reign of Daryavesh king of Persia.
