2 Mosebok 1

1 No skal de få høyra namni på Israels-sønerne som kom til Egyptarland; med Jakob kom dei, kvar med sin huslyd:

These are the names of the sons of Israel that came into Egypt together with Jacob their father; they came in each with their whole family.

2 Ruben og Simeon og Levi og Juda,

Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Judas,

3 Issakar og Sebulon og Benjamin,

Issachar, Zabulon, Benjamin,

4 Dan, Naftali, Gad og Asser.

Dan and Nephthalim, Gad and Aser.

5 Med alle i hop var det sytti mann som var ætta frå Jakob; Josef han var no alt i Egyptarland.

But Joseph was in Egypt. And all the souls [born] of Jacob were seventy-five.

6 Og Josef døydde, og alle brørne hans, og heile den ætti.

And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation.

7 Men Israels-folket muna og voks og auka og vart uhorveleg mannsterke, so dei fyllte heile landet.

And the children of Israel increased and multiplied, and became numerous and grew exceedingly strong, and the land multiplied them.

8 Då kom det ein ny konge i Egyptarland, som ikkje visste noko um Josef.

And there arose up another king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

9 Og han sagde med folki sine: «Sjå, Israels-lyden er større og sterkare enn me.

And he said to his nation, Behold, the race of the children of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we:

10 Lat oss no fara klokt fram, so dei ikkje skal aukast so mykje! For kjem det ufred, so kunde dei gjerne slå seg i hop med uvenerne våre, og strida mot oss, og fara or landet!»

come then, let us deal craftily with them, lest at any time they be increased, and whensoever war shall happen to us, these also shall be added to our enemies, and having prevailed against us in war, they will depart out of the land.

11 So sette dei futar yver deim, som skulde plåga deim med tungarbeid, og dei laut byggja tvo byar med varehus for Farao; det var Pitom og Ramses.

And he set over them task-masters, who should afflict them in their works; and they built strong cities for Pharao, both Pitho, and Ramesses, and On, which is Heliopolis.

12 Men di meir dei plåga deim, di meir auka dei, og di meir breidde dei seg ut, og egyptarane tok til å fæla for Israels-folket.

But as they humbled them, by so much they multiplied, and grew exceedingly strong; and the Egyptians greatly abhorred the children of Israel.

13 Soleis nøydde dei no Israels-folket til å træla for seg,

And the Egyptians tyrannised over the children of Israel by force.

14 og gjorde livet surt for deim med hardt arbeid i leirtaki og tiglverki og med allslags jordarbeid: alt arbeidet dei vilde ha gjort, det truga dei deim til å gjera.

And they embittered their life by hard labours, in the clay and in brick-making, and all the works in the plains, according to all the works, wherein they caused them to serve with violence.

15 Og kongen i Egyptarland sagde til dei hebraiske ljosmøderne - den eine av dei heitte Sifra og den andre Pua -:

And the king of the Egyptians spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews; the name of the one was, Sepphora; and the name of the second, Phua.

16 «Kvar gong de hjelper ei hebraisk barnsengkona, » sagde han, «so skal de sjå i fødestolen: Er det son ho hev fenge, so drep honom! er det dotter, so må ho liva.»

And he said, When ye do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and they are about to be delivered, if it be a male, kill it; but if a female, save it.

17 Men ljosmøderne hadde age for Gud, og gjorde ikkje som kongen i Egyptarland sagde, men let småsveinarne liva.

But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt appointed them; and they saved the male children alive.

18 Då kalla kongen ljosmøderne fyre seg, og sagde med deim: «Kvi gjer de dette og let sveinborni liva?»

And the king of Egypt called the midwives, and said to them, Why is it that ye have done this thing, and saved the male children alive?

19 «Dei hebraiske konorne er ikkje som dei egyptiske, » svara ljosmøderne; «dei er sterkare; innan ljosmori kjem, hev dei fenge barnet.»

And the midwives said to Pharao, The Hebrew women are not as the women of Egypt, for they are delivered before the midwives go in to them. So they bore children.

20 Då gjorde Gud vel imot ljosmøderne; og folket auka, og vart ovleg mangment.

And God did well to the midwives, and the people multiplied, and grew very strong.

21 Og for di ljosmøderne hadde age for Gud, so gav han deim ætt og avkjøme.

And as the midwives feared God, they established for themselves families.

22 Men Farao sende bod utyver til heile folket sitt og sagde: «Kvar son som kjem til verdi, skal de kasta i elvi; berre døtterne skal de lata liva!»

And Pharao charged all his people, saying, Whatever male [child] shall be born to the Hebrews, cast into the river; and every female, save it alive.
