4 Mosebok 17

1 Og Herren talte til Moses og sa:

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying,

2 Tal til Israels barn, og få tolv staver av dem, en stav for hver stamme; av hver stammehøvding skal du få en stav, og på den skal du skrive hans navn.

Speak to the children of Israel, and take rods of them, according to the houses of their families, a rod from all their princes, according to the houses of their families, twelve rods, and write the name of each on his rod.

3 Og Arons navn skal du skrive på Levis stav; for det skal være en stav for hvert overhode over deres stammer.

And write the name of Aaron on the rod of Levi; for it is one rod [for each]: they shall give [them] according to the tribe of the house of their families.

4 Og du skal legge dem i sammenkomstens telt foran vidnesbyrdet, der hvor jeg kommer sammen med eder.

And thou shalt put them in the tabernacle of witness, before the testimony, where I will be made known to thee.

5 Da skal det skje at den manns stav som jeg utvelger, skal spire; så får jeg vel fred for Israels barns knurr, som de plager eder med.

And it shall be, the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall blossom; and I will remove from me the murmuring of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.

6 Så talte Moses til Israels barn, og alle deres høvdinger gav ham hver sin stav, en stav for hver stamme, i alt tolv staver; og Arons stav var mellem deres staver.

And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and all their chiefs gave him a rod [each], for one chief a rod, according to the house of their families, twelve rods; and the rod of Aaron [was] in the midst of the rods.

7 Og Moses la stavene ned for Herrens åsyn i vidnesbyrdets telt.

And Moses laid up the rods before the Lord in the tabernacle of witness.

8 Da nu Moses dagen efter kom inn i vidnesbyrdets telt, fikk han se at Arons stav - den som var for Levis hus - hadde spiret; den hadde både skutt spirer og satt blomster og fått modne mandler.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of witness; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi blossomed, and put forth a bud, and bloomed blossoms and produced almonds.

9 Da bar Moses alle stavene ut fra Herrens åsyn og viste dem til alle Israels barn; og de så dem og tok hver sin stav.

And Moses brought forth all the rods from before the Lord to all the sons of Israel; and they looked, and each one took his rod.

10 Og Herren sa til Moses: Bær Arons stav inn igjen foran vidnesbyrdet for å gjemmes som et tegn for de gjenstridige; og du skal gjøre ende på deres knurr, så jeg slipper å høre på det; ellers skal de dø.

And the Lord said to Moses, Lay up the rod of Aaron before the testimonies to be kept as a sign for the children of the disobedient; and let their murmuring cease from me, and they shall not die.

11 Og Moses gjorde så; han gjorde som Herren hadde befalt ham.

And Moses and Aaron did as the Lord commanded Moses, so did they.

12 Men Israels barn sa til Moses: Se, vi omkommer, vi er fortapt, vi er fortapt alle sammen!

And the children of Israel spoke to Moses, saying, Behold, we are cut off, we are destroyed, we are consumed.

13 Enhver som kommer nær - som kommer nær til Herrens tabernakel, han må dø. Skal vi da omkomme alle sammen?

Every one that touches the tabernacle of the Lord, dies: shall we die utterly?
