1 Og Herren svarte Job ut av et stormvær og sa:
And after Elius had ceased from speaking, the Lord spoke to Job through the whirlwind and clouds, [saying],
2 Hvem er han som formørker mitt råd med ord uten forstand?
Who is this that hides counsel from me, and confines words in [his] heart, and thinks to conceal [them] from me?
3 Nuvel, omgjord dine lender som en mann! Så vil jeg spørre dig, og du skal lære mig.
Gird your loins like a man; and I will ask you, and do you answer me.
4 Hvor var du da jeg grunnfestet jorden? Si frem hvis du vet det!
Where was you when I founded the earth? tell me now, if you have knowledge,
5 Hvem fastsatte vel dens mål? Vet du det? Eller hvem spente målesnor ut over den?
who set the measures of it, if you know? or who stretched a line upon it?
6 Hvor blev dens støtter rammet ned, eller hvem la dens hjørnesten,
On what are its rings fastened? and who is he that laid the corner-stone upon it?
7 mens alle morgenstjerner jublet, og alle Guds sønner ropte av fryd?
When the stars were made, all my angels praised me with a loud voice.
8 Og hvem lukket for havet med dører, da det brøt frem og gikk ut av mors liv,
And I shut up the sea with gates, when it rushed out, coming forth out its mother's womb.
9 da jeg gjorde skyer til dets klædebon og skodde til dets svøp
And I made a cloud its clothing, and swathed it in mist.
10 og merket av en grense for det og satte bom og dører
And I set bounds to it, surrounding it with bars and gates.
11 og sa: Hit skal du komme og ikke lenger, her skal dine stolte bølger legge sig?
And I said to it, Hitherto shall you come, but you shall not go beyond, but your waves shall be confined within you.
12 Har du i dine dager befalt morgenen å bryte frem, har du vist morgenrøden dens sted,
Or did I order the morning light in your time; and [did] the morning star [then first] see his appointed place;
13 forat den skulde gripe fatt i jordens ender, og de ugudelige rystes bort fra den?
to lay hold of the extremities of the earth, to cast out the ungodly out of it?
14 Jorden tar da form likesom ler under seglet, og tingene treder frem som et klædebon,
Or did you take clay of the ground, and form a living creature, and set it with the power of speech upon the earth?
15 og de ugudelige unddras sitt lys, og den løftede arm knuses.
And have you removed light from the ungodly, and crushed the arm of the proud?
16 Er du kommet til havets kilder, og har du vandret på dypets bunn?
Or have you gone to the source of the sea, and walked in the tracks of the deep?
17 Har dødens porter vist sig for dig, og har du sett dødsskyggens porter?
And do the gates of death open to you for fear; and did the porters of hell quake when they saw you? (questioned)
18 Har du sett ut over jordens vidder? Si frem dersom du kjenner alt dette!
And have you been instructed in the breadth of the [whole earth] under heaven? tell me now, what is the extent of it?
19 Hvor er veien dit hvor lyset bor? Og mørket - hvor er dets sted,
And in what kind of a land does the light dwell? and of what kind is the place of darkness?
20 så du kunde hente det frem til dets område, så du kjente stiene til dets hus?
If you could bring me to their [utmost] boundaries, and if also you know their paths;
21 Du vet det vel; dengang blev du jo født, og dine dagers tall er stort.
I know then that you were born at that time, and the number of your years is great.
22 Er du kommet til forrådskammerne for sneen, og har du sett forrådshusene for haglet,
But have you gone to the treasures of snow? and have you seen the treasures of hail?
23 som jeg har opspart til trengselens tid, til kampens og krigens dag?
And is there a store [of them], for you against the time of [your] enemies, for the day of wars and battle?
24 Hvad vei følger lyset når det deler sig, og østenvinden når den spreder sig over jorden?
And whence proceeds the frost? or [whence] is the south wind dispersed over the [whole world] under heaven?
25 Hvem har åpnet renner for regnskyllet og vei for lynstrålen
And who prepared a course for the violent rain, and a way for the thunders;
26 for å la det regne over et øde land, over en ørken hvor intet menneske bor,
to rain upon the land where [there is] no man, the wilderness, where there is not a man in it; so as to feed the untrodden and uninhabited [land],
27 for å mette ørk og øde og få gressbunnen til å gro?
and cause it to send forth a crop of green herbs?
28 Har regnet nogen far? Eller hvem har avlet duggens dråper?
Who is the rain's father? and who has generated the drops of dew?
29 Av hvis liv er vel isen gått frem, og himmelens rim - hvem fødte det?
And out of whose womb comes the ice? and who has produced the frost in the sky,
30 Vannet blir hårdt som sten, og havets overflate stivner.
which descends like flowing water? who has terrified the face of the ungodly?
31 Kan du knytte Syvstjernens bånd, eller kan du løse Orions lenker?
And do you understand the band of Pleias, and have you opened the barrier of Orion?
32 Kan du føre Dyrekretsens stjernebilleder frem i rette tid, og Bjørnen med dens unger - kan du styre deres gang?
Or will you reveal Mazuroth in his season, and the evening star with his rays? Will you guide them?
33 Kjenner du himmelens lover? Fastsetter du dens herredømme over jorden?
And know you the changes of heaven, or the events which take place together under heaven?
34 Kan din røst nå op til skyen, så en flom av vann dekker dig?
And will you call a cloud with your voice, and will it obey you with a violent shower of much rain?
35 Kan du sende ut lynene, så de farer avsted, så de sier til dig: Se, her er vi?
And will you send lightnings, and they shall go? and shall they say to you, What is [your pleasure]?
36 Hvem har lagt visdom i de mørke skyer, eller hvem har lagt forstand i luftsynet?
And who has given to women skill in weaving, or knowledge of embroidery?
37 Hvem teller skyene med visdom, og himmelens vannsekker - hvem heller vannet ut av dem,
And who is he that numbers the clouds in wisdom, and has bowed the heaven [down] to the earth?
38 når støvet flyter sammen til en fast masse, og jordklumpene henger fast ved hverandre?
For it is spread out as dusty earth, and I have cemented it as one hewn stone to another.
39 Jager du rov for løvinnen, og metter du de grådige ungløver,
And will you hunt a prey for the lions? and satisfy the desires of the serpents?
40 når de dukker sig ned i sine huler og ligger på lur i krattet?
For they fear in their lairs, and lying in wait couch in the woods.
41 Hvem lar ravnen finne sin mat, når dens unger skriker til Gud og farer hit og dit uten føde?
And who has prepared food for the raven? for its young ones wander and cry to the Lord, in search of food.
